We're off to visit with Holden and Julia as they continue their around the world adventure. Eight days in Argentina - too few, we are to learn. They are having unseasonably hot weather, we are told by every cab driver we meet. But coming from the rainy northwest to summer is a pleasure. Sundresses, shorts and flip flops.... read more

La Boca Nicole and I decided that we should check out the neighborhood of La Boca, which is also home of one of the best soccer teams in Argentina, especially because the most famous player in the country, Diego Maradona, played for that team. La Boca is a waterfront neighborhood and its character derives from families who could not afford paint for their homes, instead they used leftover paint from boats which resulted in a prism of corrugated metal, cobblestone streets, and expressive people. It’s a poor neighborhood and many of the well off people would wrinkle their nose at the mention of La Boca and tell us it's not safe to go because it's full of thieves and robbers . . . a funny thing is it’s on the list of the Top Ten ... read more

I've had about a month to come up with some decent observations/facts and I thought I would share some with you. 1. Traffic - Everyone is driving as though they are trying to get their best time in a go-cart race. As fast as they can possibly go, with no regard to lanes. I don't think lanes even exist. And if you're a pedestrian, you pretty much dead meat if you think that you have the rightaway. 2. Fashion - It's very simple. While everyone generally has their own style, there are a few trends that I've seen. Looong, layered tanktops are very hot, with the racer back cut and a bra showing. Anything goes with the bottoms, shorts of all different lengths and lots of jean skirts. Havaianas, of course, since they're so cheap being ... read more

Leaving Punta Arenas and also Chile for the last time, we headed down to Ushuaia, stopping overnight at Rio Grande, which is a tiny place. Nothing to do but sleep after dinner, which was especially interesting as the campsite was basically a boggy carpark, so most of us slept inside on the floor of the yacht club where the campsite was. When I say most of us, that would be our group plus another Overland group, so about 50 people in the room... fortunately after a carton of wine, some nightnurse tablets for my cold, and the aid of earplugs, I actually slept very well! Didn´t even wake up when drunken people from the other group were stepping on us to find their spot on the floor....! Arrived in Ushuaia the next day, again camping facilities ... read more

It's thursday, so tomorrow is the the end of our first week of study here in Bueos Aires. I usually leave the class feeling very brain-numb, it is so intensive! Lots of grammar and not so much chit-chat, but better to be challenged than to be bored! Most of us doubt that our teacher is actually all that good .... or perhaps we are just dumb?) Kieran and I are in classes until 1pm every day then go exploring the city. It is huge so we have barely touched on it. I will load up some photos ... when I figure out how.... much more interesting than explanation! We are staying in San Telmo which is a beautiful area - endlass bars and cafes and all in massive ornate buildings with balconies and moldings and high ... read more

Hola First thing, the beards back and the Mullet is coming on well. I feel like a proper local again. Did everyone enjoy 7th February. Why? Because it was officially Dave´s National Wine day! I hoped you all had a glass back home. I certainly did. Ill explain a little later. After crossing the border I jumped on a bus to salta with a group I met at the immigration office. Its really hot now im near the tropics and that ive dropped down in altitude. Apart from eating alot of steak, i didnt really do much in Salta apart from climb a hill. Its a bit of a habbit now. I then went off to the nothern wine region of Cafayate. The next day I declared Dave´s national wine day. On this day I decided ... read more

So, after school we go to Cala Pizza, a little bar/cafe/pizza/empanada place next to the school for a quick beer and empanada. Quick sidestep. Empanadas. They´re like little cornish pasties. It freaked me out the first day I was here, when I was on the bus and out of the window I saw a heard of giant cornish pasties wandering around. Anyway, we were trying to decide where to go last night, as we wanted to go somewhere different, somewhere in an area we´d not been before. So we asked Andrea, our friendly waitress, who has been excellent the whole time we´ve been here, to help us out. "Why don´t you go to Acabar?" she asks, "they have lots of board games". I have to admit I was not initially enthusiastic, but went with it. Oh, ... read more

Major breakthrough!! (and quick I might add) I spent the entire last night speaking (and understanding) Spanish. It innocently started out as any other night with four other kids from school. After a walking tour of the neighborhood of San Telmo, which I will talk about later, we stopped to eat in a famous ´parrilla´, or grill, to have a meal. We started out with a liter (that´s bigger than a bottle) of wine for 6 pesos, for two people. Yah, jaw dropped to the floor. And it wasn´t the typical crappy house wine, it was nice and drinkable. Then for our meal, the majority of us took the ´bife de lomo´, or tenderloin steak, for 12 pesos. People, for FOUR dollars! I also ordered grilled red peppers on the side, for six pesos, and it ... read more

I´m constantly amazed by this city! It´s incredible that I can go out with some friends, find a quiet bar, just chat, drink slowly, not party, not go to a disco, simply sit and chat quietly with friends....til 8 in the morning. Dammit, how can a quiet night still end in almost no sleep?!!! Think on..... ... read more
