We arrived in Fiji at 3am and was picked up by "Soloman the King" a very friendly yet eccentric taxi driver who took us down an un-made track for about 20 mins in the pitch black. Rich wondered where the hell he was taking us and had his buttocks firmly clenched as a precaution. However, there was nothing to fear and we turned up at Rendevous Surf & Dive Resort that just happens to be in the middle of nowhere. He had a home-made torch using the bottom of a thermos flask, a bulb, some plastic tubing and a kettle cord that helped us to safely find our room. We woke up the next morning to find that everything was normal and the other guests were really friendly. Rich went out on a boat to a ... read more

I've been in paradise for 2 weeks and its a place I will never forget! The Fijian people are so friendly and the 300 plus tropical islands that fiji is made up of are stunningly beautiful with white sandy beaches, palms trees, and lovely blue lagoons. Its the end of winter here but its still very warm but a little cloudy and rainy at times. We were made welcome soon after the 5am landing at nadi airport by 3 Fijian mean who played guitar and sang to us while we patiently waited to get our tourist visa, along with all the other people who disembarked our double decker boeing from LA. The air pacific boeing was really cool but we were too tired to take advantage of the LCD screens built into the seats and the ... read more

Bula! Arrived safely in Fiji on Saturday evening; Our resort is very quiet; only us and 2 other couples and the manager/manageress team and staff. Everyone is very friendly! Mind you there are only 11 suites anyway, so even full it wouldn't be busy! The resort is right on the beach; the best beach on the main island we are told and it does look fantastic (if you look down one way! They are building a massive 5 star resort at the other end which is a bit of a shame, but it isn't too disruptive!) Weather hasn't been great so far though! It poured down yesterday pretty much all day, so we lazed around the hotel room and read; played some board games that the hotel has; and ate! But it is warm and the ... read more

In the words of the Kaiser Chiefs...."Oh my god I cant believe it, i've never been this far away from home!" Well, we are now officially the furthest we have been away with a whopping 11 hour time difference and a mental 13000 miles from home. Weird, considering last week when we were in Indo we were comparitively close - just a direct flight from Singapore in fact. To get to Fiji we had to cross into New Zealand briefly, just for a few hours and long enough to get a warning for joking about bombing planes. Suffice to say Lara is not any longer particularly welcome on Air NewZealand after she mentioned in passing that their incompetence and incorrect information meant that she could put a bomb in her bag and blow up the plane. ... read more

We spent the last day of North America with my sister and her husband in L.A. We went first to the East Beach bar and grill in Santa Barbara before driving down the coast towards L.A. We passed Malibu beach along the way and stopped off at Santa Monica pier, which was a little like Brighton pier! We then headed down to Venice beach (Muscle beach) and saw loads of wierd people doing weird things. Ther were also loads of people with signs saying they would do anything for marijuana! We caught our flight to Fiji and surprisingly there weren't really any extra security checks than normal except you couldn't have gel products in your carry on luggage. We arrived at the airport in Nadi and then spoke to some travel agents about booking boats and ... read more

I'm now in the airport at Fiji on my way to the Cooks. Last 3 nights in Fiji were spent on Beachcomber Island, what an amazing place! Me and Jim practically had the best room on the island and it became quite hot spot! The island itself has an 85 bed dorm so there is us with a beachfront Bure and me a double bed, poor old Jim in the single!! Did te usual things on a tropical island, jet skiis, parasailing, beach volleyball and partied till we puked! yesterday we hired some Kayaks and ended up rowing to the nearest island (Treasure Island) for a beer with a couple of guys. Nice idea, didn't look too far we thought! It was bloody miles away, got the blisters on my hands to prove it, still got ... read more

We had an extremely brief stopover in Fiji...spending a grand total of 24 hours there!! The flight from LA to Fiji was memorable due to an extremely loud and annoying American guy sitting behind us who took a valium tablet and then proceded to down several beers to wash it down. He was sitting on the window seat but found the need to climb out every half hour or so to go get another beer (or in some cases 3) or go to the toilet, shaking our seats violently in the process and making heaps of noise. Then he just about passed out and was making really loud weird noises while everyone was trying to sleep. Anyway, we made it to Fiji and was picked up and taken to our Hotel which was right on the ... read more

Ilta tummuu ja tahdet loistavat meren ylla. Matkalaiset istuvat odottamassa iltaruokaansa (ensimmaisina tietenkin...) samalla kun meri parin askelen paassa lyo pienia aaltoja rantaan. Last stop on this sojourn was a return to the Shangri La's Fijian Resort on the Coral Coast. We didn't think that it was all that big when we'd visited it four years earlier, but maybe the builders had just been very busy since. Our room was about as far from the "action" as it was possible to get. I'm pretty sure I remember counting more than 800 steps to dinner one night. I hope we were actually staying in the right resort, and that we hadn't instead accidentally wandered into rooms in the next resort along the coast. Our interconnecting rooms had TVs. Groan. Why is it that teens and pre-teens are so attracted to electronics. We could have stayed at home and saved a lot of money if all they'd wanted to do was ... read more

Having left LAX on 23/9@23:30, arrived in Fiji on 25/9@05:10 as a result of crossing the International Date Line - another lifetime first! Spent much of the first day at Nadi airport sorting out a 6 night island excursion to the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands.... the plan was always to get off the main island Viti Levu a.s.a.p to experience true island paradise. Visited the Viseisei village later that afternoon in an attempt to experience some true Fijian culture before leaving Viti Levu. I was dissapointed as the village seemed somewhat modernised with a distinct lack of traditional bures. So having bought a 7 day Bula pass, caught the Yasawa Flyer for the first leg of 6 nights island hopping. Spent the first two nights up North on Nacula, staying at the Nabua Lodge where I ... read more
