We boarded the plane in Rarotonga for our short flight to Fiji at 01.30 on Saturday 5 August, and arrived in Nadi (on the main island of Viti Levu) at about 03.00 on Sunday 6 August. Losing a whole day is clumsy even for us. The date line can really mess with your head if you think about it too much, but Fijians operate on ‘Fiji Time’ (i.e. whenever) so it was all pretty irrelevant. No sooner had we touched down in Fiji then we were ushered in to the airport booking office for the place where we’d be spending our first few days in Fiji and invited to get a few hours shut-eye on their armchairs - very hospitable, the Fijians. First thing the next day we caught the Yawawa Flyer catamaran to the Yasawa ... read more

The other weekend I went with a group of friends to visit a traditional Fijian village to experience the culture and get away from the hustle and bustle of Suva. It was an epic journey, taking 6-7 hours each way from Suva. Jane and I started our journey on Friday afternoon, leaving Suva by taxi, bound for Sigatoka (a town along the coral coast heading towards Nadi). Our master plan of arranging a taxi that morning to pick Jane up from work then coming to get me failed miserable (taxi driver was a no show), added to the fact that Jane doesn’t have a mobile so communication was impossible. So 45 minutes later, we finally located each other and were on our way. The 2 hour drive to Sigatoka was fairly quiet, after the initial gossip ... read more

''BULA!'' (Hello in Fijian - we've learnt all the lingo!) It only seems like yesterday I was writing my last blog when we were leaving New Zealand- it was over 2 weeks ago now! We arrived into Hawaii on Sunday but Ive still not told you about our great time in Fiji so here goes.. Going to Fiji definitely brought back the appreciation of travelling for me. Although Australia and New Zealand are fantastic countries and we had an amazing time you kinda forget your travelling the world and how lucky you are. I think its mainly because theres no culture change, no change of language, sometimes I very much felt at home! I was so excited about going to Fiji the night before I could hardly sleep! We were that excited we nearly went to ... read more

So this is Fiji...not a bad place to stop for a few months. I'm in week 3 now and really enjoying myself. I've met lots of people at Homestay, where I'm living, mostly kiwis which is a worry, but they're lovely all the same :-) I won't write much here, because I've put descriptions in the pictures. But basically I've been keeping busy, when I'm not at work I'm out having dinner or drinks somewhere and weekends I try to get out of Suva, which makes coming back to work more bearable.... read more

Anybody remember who sang that song? I don't but it seems appropriate. Yesterday we were preparing to head to the Yasawa Island group today. This morning after looking at the weather and reading some other emails we are preparing to go back to Musket Cove. We are actually only spending a couple of days there and then headed to Vanuatu. So my days in Fiji are numbered. While I'm excited to go to Vanuatu, I am not excited to leave Fiji. It's quite a good feeling to feel like you are leaving something behind when you leave a country. It's easy to say "I'll be back" though I know deep down, that the world is big, so you never know. The trip to Vanuatu is about 4-5 days so we should be there Wednesday or Thursday. ... read more

Ok, I'm back in Lautoka now. I think I've been here for like over 2 weeks and I haven't done Jack. I've really been on a sort of spring break. While the boat was getting fixed I didn't do much. Hung out, worked on the boat, tried to heal some old injuries and then made friends with the local bar staff. Then we went to Musket Cove for what turned into 5 days. Musket Cove is a resort a short 3 hour sail from Vuda Point. Its a resort for tourists and yachties alike. My days were spent mostly just wandering around the beach. Then into the island bar for sunset and grilling out and then who knows. I had some great days partying with the Rod, Elize, Annabella, and Barbie from Raven. Both in Vadu ... read more

Dear all, hope everyone is sitting comfortably...... then i'll begin.... we have just spent the week in Fiji, slap bang in the middle of the South Pacific!! its as far from home as we could ever get! Fiji was as you could expect hot, infact very hot at times, i believe it may have been as hot as the "supposed" heat wave in UK. We stayed in the main town of Nadi, prenounced Nandi for some apparent reason. Nadi was a bit of a disappointment, as we found it quite dirty and full of people trying to hustle us into their establishments. After Thailand we were more than prepared for them! I even rugby tackled some guy for trying to hand me a flyer! honestly! so we spent quite a bit of by the pool and ... read more
