Just a quick one to say I've had an amazing week- Diving with sharks, laying on the beach and meeting fun people while being cared for by Tiki (the receptionist). I'm heading down to the coral coast now with 4 others. I'll show you photos and tell you all about Mana and the coral coast next week as the bus leaves soon. Love to all T... read more

Kat writes: Walking through the airport the air was filled with the sound of guitars strumming and people singing. Wearing big smiles, loud shirts and colourful flowers. Our Fijian welcome was in full swing. "Bula!" they cried "Where you from?" "England!" we replied. "Ah, the mother country. Welcome home". I knew i was going to like this place! We headed for Nadi the main jumping off point to the islands we wanted to visit and met up with Gemma, a girl we met in Byron Bay, Australia, who also flew in today from New Zealand. After a rather messy night out at Eds Bar and a day in town getting sorted, all 3 of us were ready to head out to the islands. There are 330 islands in Fiji all in all. A little too many ... read more

One of my weekend trips away recently was to Takalana, which is about 2.5 hours north of Suva. We had two car loads of people, the unfortunate group were in front in the rickity old van, the lucky ones (including me!) were in a brand new 4-wheel drive....aahh, I do like to travel in style. And the 4-wheel drive was necessary, from about half way the tar road ends and the mud and gravel roads take over. Our destination was a small backpackers place up on a hill overlooking a black sand beach. It’s rather unusual, it feels like sand except it’s really dark (but not muddy). After we’d arrived and had lunch in the sun, followed by a nap on the ground, we followed the local children to a water fall. The walk wasn’t very ... read more

Hello I have arrived in Fiji- not much more to say than that- I arrived at 6am after a 10 hour flight but there was no one in the next to seats from me so I got to lie down and sleep. I got picked up from the airport and taken to my hostel- seems nice enough , free continental breakfast- well 2 pieces of toast! Kind English girl lent me 1FD to get the bus into town. Have now made it to the cash point and the internet cafe. Cant say much more than that- Its is fairly obvious that most people stay here for a short time as poss so I will try and book a boat trip through the islands that leaves tomorrow even though I booked 2 nights at the hostel. The ... read more

I'm gonna slow it right down, the days moving just too fast for me... Bula my friends, We arrived in Nadi, Fiji on 14th August and quickly sorted out a Youth Hostel, halfway beween the airport and Nadi town. Our first two days were spent trying to organise what we'd be doing for the next 3 weeks which involved getting the bus from our hostel into Nadi. Nadi is relatively small, containing a lot of Souvenir Shops and a couple of Supermarkets. It felt like we were back in Thailand because we couldn't be left in peace to walk for 10 seconds without being hassled by some locals trying to chat to us. They'd start off all nicey nice asking where we were from and coming out with all this spiel how they love Englnd, the ... read more

As we got off the plane in Fiji the warm air wafted over us. “Bula!” smiled an airport official as we walked through to the arrivals lounge. We went through the usual procedures and came out to pick up our ride to the resort. Everyone smiled as we came through the gates and asked where we were staying. Being a hardened traveller I was used to being jumped on by unhelpful taxi drivers and tried my best to ignore them but actually they were genuinely trying to help as they pointed Lins in the right direction to catch our ride. The minibus took us out of the airport and into the town of Nadi (pronounced Nandi) where the streets were dusty and very busy. We carried on to the outskirts of the town until the road ... read more

Early Saturday morning we all assembled to set off to Volivoli beach, the northen most part of the island. Our cultural mix this weekend consisted of Aussie, Kiwi, Pom and French. The five of us piled into the 4-wheel drive and set-off, first driving across the new bridge at Nausori which had just opened on the Thursday. The bridge had been in planning and construction for a few years so it had been a fairly momentous occasion in Fiji. An hour and a half into our journey the smooth luxury of tar gave way to the adventures of narrow gravel roads. The scenery was fabulous, lush tropical jungle, vibrantly coloured flowers and animals enough to fill Old McDonalds farm. It’s always fun driving along these bumpy out of the way roads because the local Fijians are ... read more
