Jokainen vastaantulija hymyilee ja sanoo "bula"... Aurinko paistaa ja vesi on lamminta.... Olemme Fijilla! :) Huomenna lahdemme kohti Manan saarta, missa vietamme seuraavat paivat. Toivomme sormet ristissa etta saa paranee ja paasemme paratiisisaaren tunnelmiin. Palaamme pidemmilla kuulumisilla toivottavasti parin paivan sisalla. :) Hanna & Hannu... read more

We made a nervous return to Mana Island, keen not to repeat our previous experience of a bure full of monstrous spiders (refer 2002 blog entitled "Sacred Peaks and Eight Legged Freaks"). We booked a first floor room in a still-rustic looking building in the hope that Mana's spiders weren't of the climbing variety. I'm not quite sure what we were thinking - I'm pretty certain there's no such thing as a non-climbing spider. This all quickly became a bit irrelevant. We were told that we couldn't have our chosen room type for the first couple of days, and were instead shown to a ground floor room in a very modern block on the South Beach. We were about as far away from the arachnid infested bure of our previous visit and still be on the ... read more

Greetings from Fiji! Well, a little bit to catch up on! Firstly, I am now 29, thanks for all the texts and emails! Almost made up for no presents!! Well, Ju did get me a smashing card & two books I really wanted, hurrah. So, we sailed from the South Island of NZ to the North, arriving with the van in Wellington. Suffice to say, the crossing was beautiful, if a little dull. Wellington was wet, as everyone had told us it would be! So, we carried on in TravelWhiting tradition and sampled the local culture. Or beer, as it's known at home. We explored Welly, did the cable car upto a decent lookout spot the next day and it was really nice, apart from being surrounded by 10 yr old girls (the type with ribbons ... read more

Had a day trip out to the Islands of Fiji today, amazing!! First stop was Bounty Island where they actually filmed love island the first year. What a top place, the beaches were paradise and the snorkeling was top notch. I wish I had stayed on this place, 25 quid a night and I'm not kidding 6 to 1 ratio female to male!! Fell in love with an Aussie bird, blonde yahoo!! We missed our ferry to the next island, so blagged a private transfer from the island, probably our fault but they felt guilty at the end of my winge!! Next Island was south sea island, free BBQ (all I could eat) and free bar!! Did some canoeing, volleyball and went in a submarine to see the coral and fish!! Best islands ever, I'm thinking ... read more

It was a very exciting build-up to Mark and Carl arriving in Fiji and because we had arrived early, we had more time on our hands than we could wish for! We were trying to lie low, spend little cash and soak up some Fiji sun before they arrived (the comment "we're lying low" always raised eyebrows. No we are not wanted criminals!!). However, the weather wasn't too chirpy for the first few weeks so we did lots of reading and eating - we backpackers have it so tough! We made a small trip to the Mamanuca Islands (we did lots of crab racing where Erin won and as a penance had to endure drinking a beer through a snorkel - not what she had in mind!). We visited Beachcomber Island which is supposed to be ... read more

Fiji didn't start all that well. We landed ina torrential thunderstorm, which in itself was a little scary, but then the power at the airport was down and we had to sit in the plane for an extra 45 minutes as they couldn't power the airbridge to let us off! Just what I wanted after an 11 hour flight! Flight was great though, loads of room and was half empty so had 3 seats to my self, made my nest (stu knows) and slept for perhaps 8 of the 11, HEAVEN!! First day in Fiji was much like the arrival, rained so heavy all day, luckily the hotel had ESPN and sports was on, replay of the 1996 Heineken Rugby Cup final, it'll do!! We ventured out to Nadi Town center and braved the rain. Bit ... read more

Arrived at Nadi (pronounced Nandi) around midnight where I was to chill at the airport for 12 hours waiting for a connecting flight to Nagigia. After falling in and out of sleep and trying to keep an eye on my stuff at the same time it was time to board the eight seater aeroplane. On boarding I met friends from California, Hef and Margo who were also heading to the Island of Nagigia and wave of King Kong’s Left. After a very scenic hour flight over Fiji and out to the Island of Kadavu we were taken by boat to Nagigia where we headed straight out for a surf. Access to the wave is by boat. You can paddle out and back in if you choose, and if you find yourself caught inside you can be ... read more

Monday I got up early like every morning - well actually like every morning when I am on holiday - work days I just hit the snooze button again and again. Even showering in Fiji is exciting - I bumped into a very tall, very fit naked man walking out of the showers at 6 a.m. Fortunately for him and very, very unfortunately for me I didn't have my glasses on so it was all just a very fit blurry outline, it is times like this when I seriously consider laser surgery. I love Monday mornings now - I really do. I have always hated them and slept badly on Sunday nights, now I just love Mondays. I just think of what I should be doing if I was home and the grim scenery and grey ... read more

Finally this has photos. I arrived in Fiji 24 hours later than planned - thanks to Air Pacific cancelling my original flight - and refusing any compensation other than some crappy hotel in an industrial area of LA. Advice to anyone thinking of flying with Air Pathetic ... don't. However I did finally get there - and even made a few friends on the flight. As my luggage whizzed round and round and round the carousel I ignored it to exchange contact details with my new found friends. I waited at the airport for the transport to take me to Octopus Resort - my chosen destination. The information desk waved in the general direction of the two dozen people waiting for various tour operators and told me to 'wait with the other couple going to Octopus'. ... read more

BULA! Muddy Nadi Well, after over 30 hours of travel, we arrived safely in Nadi, Fiji. We managed to meet up with Scott and Cara for an hour in the LA airport, and also walked by Vince Vaughn and Ryan Seacrest - needless to say Carolyn was much more excited by this than I was. At the Fiji Airport our driver, Vincent, introduced us to Fiji time after letting us wait for about 45mins after telling us we would be leaving in just 20mins. This became a theme over the next 10 days and really helped to slow down the pace.... We stayed in a beach front room at the Traveller Beach Hotel, figuring we could afford to splurge a little for the first few days... a quick walk on the beach in the morning was ... read more
