We arrived in Sydney to rain and grey clouds (not what we were expecting!) and an entourage of Mark's friends to greet us at the airport. We spent our first afternoon on Aussie soil in the beautiful northern beaches resort of Manly with the wonderful Dickie. A group of us enjoyed some drinks in the Manly Wharf Hotel (Hotels are pubs here!) at the harbor and Sarah was introduced to many of her new fiancés friends, some of which she will be enjoying seeing lots of over the coming 2 years. After a week of Sydney, Mark and Sarah traveled up [View Full Entry]

It's Fiji Time! Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands
It was a very exciting build-up to Mark and Carl arriving in Fiji and because we had arrived early, we had more time on our hands than we could wish for! We were trying to lie low, spend little cash and soak up some Fiji sun before they arrived (the comment "we're lying low" always raised eyebrows. No we are not wanted criminals!!). However, the weather wasn't too chirpy for the first few weeks so we did lots of reading and eating - we backpackers have it so tough! We made a small trip to the Mamanuca Islands (we did lots [View Full Entry]

Well, considering LA wasn't even supposed to be a part of our trip and was in fact something of a "have to do", rather than a "must-do" we should stress how blown away we have been by this city and its people!!! It's the coolest place ever... We arrived into Venice Beach completely and utterly shattered after a 48hr journey from BA. Our flight to the US had taken us via Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico and FINALLY Los Angeles, where we disembarked, with some relief, to a beautiful sunny day and huge hospitality...Venice Beach is the beach where anything goes. Another highlight for us in South America was definitely the beautiful Iguazu Falls... Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horsehoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left a large crack in the earth. Of the many tall cascades that collectively make up Iguazu Falls, the semi-circular Devil's Throat is by far the most awesome. It is the world's mightiest single water fall (in terms of water-flow volume) - and its incessant roar is deafening, to the point of being terrifying.. In [View Full Entry]

Buenos Aires is a beautiful city. The sun was shining upon arrival and we headed straight to our hostel which was really clean, comfortable and most of all had powerful, HOT showers...something we were only dreaming about in Bolivia. Everything about the city works which is unlike most other parts of S. America. It even has its own tube line which reminded us of Barcelona's underground. Buenos Aires has beautiful architecture and as predicted, it was very European in style. It is again a city where poverty lies side by side with huge wealth and affluence and we experienced a number [View Full Entry]

Crossing the border into Argentina was very exciting but also very laborious. Typically, Bolivian organisation was limited and a line of approx 60 people continuously queued at the passport control where one guy sat, alone, typing with 2 fingers, entering in all passport details... We were both really excited to see Argentina though as we knew the food was going to be great and cheap (we hadnt even attempted fresh fruit or veg for ages and we were looking forward to a good feed!), the wine tasty and world-renowned... We travelled through beautiful scenery and past stunning lakes, felt the [View Full Entry]

One beer owed to anyone who gets stuck!

The Salt Lakes of Bolivia have definitely been a highlight for the both of us. The scenery is unusually beautiful and the surroundings surreal. The Uyuni Salt Pan is located on the Bolivian high plateau at altitudes of over 3,600 meters above sea level. This salt pan processes a large part of the salt consumed in Bolivia and it is considered a source of national pride. We watched the extraction of salt by traditional methods and visited a hotel made entirely out of salt. The total area is 10,580 km2, it feels like you are surrounded by a brilliant white desert [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Puno as a starting point for seeing the lake, Amantani and the Uros floating islands. At an altitude of 3,827 meters, Puno is still the capital of Peru's altiplano - the harsh highland region much better suited to alpacas than to people! Puno is also the stepping-off point for exploring Titicaca with its amazing array of islands, Indian inhabitants and colourful traditions. Lake Titicaca is the worlds highest navigable lake and now the natural separation between Peru and Bolivia. It has a surface area exceeding 8,000 square kilometers. Firstly, we took a boat across to th [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Cusco with partying in mind! Cusco was once the Inca capital and is also now the biggest party town in South America. We enjoyed a night out in Mama Africas and tried the local cuisine which was (Tess) really nice. We had a BBQ of beef, chicken, sausage and salad etc. Most things here are served with either rice or fries and carne seems to be the meal du jour, every day! Mama Africas was fun although a slightly dingy bar with the tiniest balcony. It was full of people from all different origins and made for a [View Full Entry]

Arequipa is a very nice colonial city and we saw both highlights here. One of which is the Santa Catalina Convent - a city within a city. Located in the center of Arequipa, Santa Catalina is the pride of its townspeople, covering an area of more than 29,426 square meters. The nunnery was founded in 1580 and visitors have been able to stroll through the streets and cloisters since 1970. During colonial times the cloisters were a refuge of female nobility who had decided to shut themselves away from the world and dedicate themselves entirely to prayer. We took an hour [View Full Entry]
