We left Alice Springs and headed north passing through a place called Wycliffe Wells where they have the most UFO sightings in Australia. Coincidentally, they also have a the largest range beers at the pub there and they’re not sure if the two are connected! We camped at the campground at Devils Marbles for the night (391km) - no power, water or showers, and just basic ‘pit’ toilets. Luckily we are self sufficient, with our own toilet, shower, water tanks and solar panels for power. It was a beautiful spot and we parked the van overlooking the rocky outcrops. Cocktail hour watching the sunset over these rocks was fantastic. When we went outside later on - the whole sky was like black velvet sprinkled with diamontes. We were mesmerised by the stars - how many and ... read more

14/7/06 Had a lie in and up just before 10.00am, went into Darwin and had a good look around after a milkshake topped up phone and wandered down to the sea for a sit down in the shade. Went into Coles for supplies and back for BBQ plus did some washing, Lisa made fruit salad for dessert while Bim and Feeg wandered round the site (we actually crept out with a couple of cold tinnies I recall - Bim). 15/7/06 Had a lie in again and Lisa and Feeg had a swim before packing. Left for airport 1.20 pm took ages checking in went through to departures with them and went through to gate about 3.15pm, very sad as we won’t see her for ages. Stopped at Coles for meat for BBQ and also get our ... read more

10/7/06 Up to the sun again and began packing, left for airport about 3-30pm Claire and Rob couldn’t get parked so didn’t see them. Visitors allowed in departure lounge so Karen came through. Saw plane come in unload and off we went. Landed in Melbourne an hour early and very windy and temperature lower than Perth, yuk! John and Mary drove us back to their place ½ hour or so and had a cuppa and long chat. 11/7/06 In Geelong (Victoria State) went for a long drive on Great Ocean road all the way to Lorne. Rained a little and a bit cold. Lots of views over the ocean had a coffee and cake and a wander round the shops. Went in op shop (charity) for a look. Drove back partly through forest, saw some kangaroos ... read more

Second week and we are in the Whitsundsays. We are staying in a backpackers hostel overlooking the beach - cheap enough that we can afford private rooms (see view from communal balcony). And tomorrow we sail off on a 127ft long tall ship called the Solway Lass for three days touring the islands. I've signed up for an introductory scuba dive but mostly we will be snorkelling and sunbathing. Given the sun has not stopped shining, I think we will be in for a shock next week when we hit true winter in Christchurch. But for now I am happy pottering in my flip flops and eating ice cream. love em This is the life - it's the middle of winter here but its 25 degrees, sunshine and balmy breezes blowing in over the lagoon. And ... read more

Yesterday was intense, we started the day being picked up at 8:15 by a driver for a company called blazing saddles who then drove us out of cairns and up one of the windeiest mountin roads I have ever been up and he wasnt slow about it either. The view we saw briefly fly past at the top of the mountain was amazing below us sprawled out the mountain rainforest we had just come through followed by Cairns and the Pacific, we didnt have any time to take this in however as we were quickly slung round another bend and started decending again. We arrived at Blazing saddles (a dusty looking farm/ranch ) to be met by some lovely instructors who sum up the Australian mentality on customer service, friendly, and I dont mean american Mcdonalds ... read more

Hello! This is the first time I have had access to internet (that worked) so I apologize! We have done a lot, but I will try to keep it brief. Our first day we toured the Olympic Park Grounds and Telstra Stadium. It was a good frist day, the pool was very refreshing. On our second day we had a group photo in front of the Sydney Opera house and Harbour Bridge, then went to an opal museum. (If anyone doesn't like their gift, just let me know and I am sure any one of the leaders would love to take it off your hands!). We also had a Harbour cruise and tour of the Opera house. The Opera house was quite different then anyone expected. They have hosted events like sumo wrestling, boxing, opera, concerts, ... read more

I havent had internet for the past week but it has been a really good one. I dont think I spent more than one night at home as I was out and about with different people from work everynight. WED NIGHT: I met up with Connor and Derek Hardy after going out with the work boys to coogie beach. (bout half hour out of the city). Was a good nigth and was rad to see people from back home. Ended up in Kings cross as I ahve everytime I go out almost. Its open all night and it close to home. But it is full of strip joints and hookers so its a little seedy. But all is well. THURS: Worked 12-9, went home, ate, slept. Friday: Worked 9-6, went out with people from work who ... read more

Introduction This week's walk was at the Sandy Creek Conservation Park in the Barossa Valley. We also had a side visit to the Barossa Valley Dam where we had fun passing secret messages along the Whispering Wall. Our walk was based on Number 5 in George Driscoll's 50 Real Bushwalks - although if you have the book don't try following the map showing that the trail goes on the western side of the water tank - they must have moved it. George writes If you have never tried bushwalking, this is an ideal one to start with. and I agree with him - it is very gentle and there are birds, flowers and animals to entertain. The path is currently marked with ribbons that help you pick it out from all the animal tracks. Further information ... read more

In 136 days my dream to travel to Europe will become a reality. We will be going around the world in 28 days...a somewhat crazy and whirlwind trip that I wish could be done over a 3 month period at least!! :) The last month or two has been crazy between work, uni and trying to plan this trip. At first it started off being somewhat of a dream where we were saving and buying travel books, but nothing was set it concrete. Because of such a short time frame, working out where we wanted to go, and how long we wanted to stay in each place just about drove us insane, but we did it! The other big decision that we had to make was who to fly with, and honestly it wasn't that hard, ... read more
