I flew from Cairns down to Adelaide to visit my friend Phil Deacon. I hadnt seen him in almost a year as he is studying med school down in Oz at Flinders Uni. It was during my week stay with him that it hit me, that most people actually have daily lives with lots of responsibility. Deacon is definetly no exception. This man accomplishes more by 10am than most do in a full day. He was voted president of his med school program by his peers last year, which is a huge responsibility and also finds time to socialize more than most and maintains grades that are at the top of his class. Most of my evenings in Adelaide, we would stay up late watching TV and talking out on his back porch until about 1 ... read more

Sunday started out with the best of intentions... wake up early, have lunch, read the papers, go to Centennial Park and feed the ducks, take a walk, feed the ducks some more, nap on the grass by the duck pond, go for dinner. The reality was that we woke up late-ish, couldn't agree on what to eat for lunch, but did get the papers and bread for the ducks and headed over to Centennial Park. Just in time for the sunny skies to turn thundercloud gray and downpour buckets and buckets. "Oh, but we need it" (remember that old chestnut from a prior entry?). You know what... need it some other time. I'm on holiday and this sucks. We ate our subs in the van and watched people scurry to their cars in a poor attempt ... read more

In three days we will be leaving for our big adventure. We have left so many wonderful things behind- our first home together, fantastic jobs, very dear friends and most beloved families. We will miss them all so very much, as well as this beautiful city where we have always had everything at our fingertips. The culmination of years of daydreaming, saving and scheming begins in three days, when we will get onto a Qantas jet and start our long-awaited world trip. If all goes to plan we will try to record some of our experiences here, with the intention of keeping in touch with absent friends, and of producing a record of our trip that we can print out and keep for a very long time. ... read more

Our last stop on out Greyhound west coast trip was in the very windy Cervantes! The main attraction here is the spectacular sight of the Pinnacles - hundreds of limestone formations, which cover an enormous area (can't remember exactly how big and I won't guess because I tend to exaggerate when I guess numbers!). The first Europeans to sight them thought they must be the remains of an ancient, Atlantis-type city and the local Aborignal people believe that they were formed after a huge war between tribes where all the dead bodies were turned to stone afterwards. Science (always keen to spoil everyones fun) tells us they're formed by a cycle of wind, sand, rain and vegetation over thousands of years, which isn't nearly as interesting! Nevertheless, Dianne our tour guide, took us and four other ... read more

Blog 11 hello mudder hello fadder is best read before this one it was published on 7th February but interested people weren’t informed by email I don’t know why. jo Blog 12 Wait a minute it’s stopped raining. The weather was worsening at lake St Clair in fact it snowed after we left, and so we decided we would move on east even though there were still things we had wanted to do, we stopped at Fortescue Bay just outside port Arthur. Here we met a group of Tasmanians who had been coming here every year for the past four years the enjoyed the fishing and just that day had caught forty ,something beginning with T, Trivelly I think, and four lobsters. They had a good game they would play which involved a rubber snake and ... read more

I only had a week back down in Sydney because of time off from work etc which wasn't a problem to begin with but towards the end of the week definately became something i wish i could have changed. Our flight touched down to clouds and the prospect of rain according to the flight attendant however when we arrived it was blue skies and warm (but bearable) sunshine. We were picked up by my friend Jess who's house we were staying at in Newport in the Northern Beaches. We went for fish & chips, dumped our stuff and went to the RSL for dinner and somecheap drinks. $2 Pilsners definately did the trick and after meeting up with a few more of my friends who i introduced George to we were well on our way to ... read more

Ok, so Dan Dan the Aussie man and I made it to Cairns alive and well after our trip through t'outback! It's a touch more remote than Taplow. Cairns Due to it being the middle of the wet season it was pretty quiet although it was still very hot and humid...I felt like Wozza after doing 2 minutes running ;) Stayed here for a couple of days where we just chilled at the local lagoon - swimming in the sea is not recommended due to the crocs and it was also jellyfish season but either way I was happy to stay away. Made our way down to Magnetic Island to dive the famous Yongala wreck only to find that Dan didn't have enough logged dives and that the trips didn't fit into our plans timewise. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road February 10th 2007

First a postscript to our Great Ocean Road Odyssey - on our last day in Lorne we drove some 25k back along the GOR to a small township Kennet River which claimed to have a koala walk and as neither Wendy nor I had seen koalas in the wild it seemed a good idea, especially as the weather still refused to be beach type (windy and low 20s with lots of clouds and intermittent sunshine, in fact pretty much what it has been all week). I didn't have particularly high hopes as koalas tend to hang around in the trees sleeping and as such aren't particularly easy to spot. However before we even got out the car Cara spotted a koala, fast asleep in a gum tree on the edge of the village, then another in ... read more

From Perth, Bekka and I flew back to Melbourne where we met Rich and Stefan. Our first day was spent wandering round the city, going to the Queen Elizabeth Markets which had amazing food stalls and checking out St Kilda which had cake shops selling every different type of cake imaginable. The next day, the four of us hired a car and we headed to Philip Island. At the west point of the island we saw seals round the Nobbies (the name for a group of rocks sticking out the sea - prettier than it sounds!!) and went to a beautiful beach. In the evening, we went to the Penguin Parade, the real reason for coming to the island. This is were loads of really cute, tiny blue penguins waddle out of sea and up the ... read more
