Travel Blog Posts

Okay, so after a fairly long break from Travelblogging, I've come back onto here to write a secret update all about our Honeymoon. So if you're reading this, don't mention it to Laura as it's a big secret... So why Honeymoon Canada and not somewhere like the Seychelles? Well, the bargain price flights in August was a big reason, which was pretty much why we didn't have a clue what we were actually going to do for our three weeks until we arrived! And anyone who's read out other blogs probably knows that we're not really sit-around-for-two-weeks type holidayers so we had to keep it interesting, and this seemed like a good opportunity! (By the way, nothing in life is free, and cheap, indirect flights are no different - half the money we saved got blown ... read more

The Cook Islands...

.... AKA the holiday at the end of the holiday part 2. We arrived in Rarotonga late on friday afternoon, having left saturday lunchtime, and spent our bonus afternoon/evening enjoying a drink by the waterside in Avarua town and the first of what became too many Palace Burgers (Nic - if you never had these when you were here you need to go back!). Saturday morning was absolutely scorching hot and we headed back to town with a big list of things to do before the whole island pretty much closed for the rest of the weekend at lunchtime! As this was our last stop, we weren't going to worry about budgeting too much and just enjoy ourselves so in the space of a few hours we'd squeezed in: A trip to the craft market, which ... read more

Fiji

And so we've arrived at the 'holiday at the end of the holiday' (part 1)! We arrived in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) armed only with a slightly old Lonely Planet (cheers, John) and with basically no idea about to do for the next 10 days. Nadi isn't as bad as everyone says, although it does feel a bit like someone took 2 streets straight out of somewhere like Kuala Lumpur or Delhi and dumped them in the middle of a green paradise complete with all the dirty old buses, smog, people giving you the hard sell etc! Most people we spoke to, both here and on our trip so far, said that the best thing to do is to get off the main island (Vitu Levu) ASAP and head to one of the islands in the ... read more

After a good couple of recovery days in Auckland with Laura's fantastic family (who spoiled us rotten!), we headed up to the Bay of Islands and the far north to complete the final part of our NZ trip. We headed to Paihia, stopping along the way to see the giant Kauri trees (which were more impressive than the ones in SW Oz!), and to watch possibly the funniest (in an immature way) 10 minute video ever about Opo, the gay dolphin. It was made in the 1950s and is a victim of the English language changing over the past few decades ('this gay dolphin can prove to be a slippery mount' etc). A couple of other photo stops broke up the journey nicely and we hit the hay early as we were heading to the very ... read more

We left Napier and headed back to Taupo with the hope of doing the Tongariro Crossing walk (that the bad weather had stopped us doing last time). We arrived mid morning to glorious sunshine and blue skies, but were disappointed to find it was cancelled the next day, once again due to bad weather. D'oh! Luckily we had a bit of time on our hands and held out and headed off after 2 nights! The 17km walk, which goes across Tongariro National Park, was pretty cool although the weather for the 1st half of the walk wasn't great - the visibilty was about 10ft, which meant that we never actually saw Mount Nguaruhoe which was Mount Doom in LOTR movies. But once we over the highest point of the walk (after the nasty but accurately ... read more

Wellington to Napier

We said goodbye to the South Island (not literally) and got back on the ferry to Windy Welly. Having already seen a fair bit of the sights we decided to only stay for 2 nights to allow more time to see some 'pastures new'. But we did manage to squeeze in a few drinks (alcoholic and tea) with our good pal Amy (she's from Bishop's Waltham not Southampton don't you know!?) who's living the high life with her 50k per annum job (NZ dollars not pounds, but it still sounds good for an OT)! We also headed back to the Te Papa museum, as we never finished it last time! It's well worth a visit, although we were a bit rushed again because we spent most of the afternoon climbing Mount Victoria (yes we are ... read more

url='/Videos/2903.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/2903.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;' Kaikoura Dolphins So Magic Stu took us from sunny Tekapo up the east coast to Christchurch. En route, Stu had a call telling him that one of the other backpacker buses (Kiwi Experience AKA the bogey bus) had plummeted 35m over the edge of a cliff between the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers with 45 people on board. It wasn't until the 6pm news that night we finally heard that incredibly the most serious injuries had been broken arms. So after a long stomach churning days there were massive sighs of relief all round. At first the weather in Christchurch was a little bit too much England (with the exception of the heatwave you seem to be having at the moment) but it didn't stop us heading to the beach hoping to get ... read more

Dunedin and Lake Tekapo

After the much rated but never over-hyped Queenstown, we headed to the east coast and to the very Scottish town of Dunedin (it means 'Edinburgh of the south' apparently...) Our 2 days was filled mostly with some wildlife spotting on the Otago Peninsula, which was better than it sounds! Although it was a tad cold we saw Royal Albotros' (Albotri?!), Seals, Sea-Lions and Yellow Eyed Penguins to name but a few. Oh, and lots of sheep obviously but then this is New Zealand! We walked within a few metres past the Sea Lions, which are huge and pretty scary - they're known to chase people and can move along the beach at 25km/h! Luckily they were happy just grunting at us on the day. The penguins were pretty cool too - they're quite rare and ... read more

Wanaka and Queenstown

Published: August 9th 2007Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown

We decided to jump off the Magic Bus in Wanaka for a couple of nights en route to Queenstown. Once again we were overwhelmed by it's natural beauty. Wanaka is a small town that during the winter months becomes a very popular ski/snowboarding resort. During our couple of days in Wanaka, it became really, really cold! We weren't particularly well prepared for this with just one jumper and pair of jeans each! BRRRR! The icy weather didn'us off too much though, and we climbed up Mount Iron to look out over Wanaka. Despite nearly being blown away at the top, it was another stunning view. Another must-do activity in Wanaka is 'Puzzling World', which boasts 'The Great Maze' and four different 'Illusion Rooms'. We spent a very amusing hour and a half chasing each other around ... read more

Franz Josef Glacier

Published: August 9th 2007Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef

We arrived in the very small town of Franz Josef at midday, and quickly established that there really is very little to do other than the 'glacier-related' activities! So during the afternoon, we managed to watch more TV than we have in 4 months and became pretty wrinkled in the lush hot tub! This was all perfect preparation for our full-day glacier hike the next day (with the exception of going to the pub for cheap beer and free weird shots in the evening with our the Magic Bus driver and fellow Magic passengers!!). The next morning was absolutely perfect with gorgeous blue skies and a few white fluffy clouds - ideal for hiking on, in and around a glacier! We hiked in a groups of about 12 people and were led by super-fit Tom, ... read more
