I'm grouping all these days together as so much as happened! We left Airlie Beach on 16th Feb and went down to the arena to get our boat to sail the whitsundays island. Our boat was called The Whitsunday Magic, it was a huge delux sail boat. Trust me to pick the most expensive boat there is! It was very luxurious, all with our own cabins etc. We set sail with some champagne in hand off into the sun! We watched the sunset and had a fabulous dinner prepared by a the chef who had asked each of us what type of food we liked and didn't like. Day 2 on the boat started beautifully. Breakfast buffet and then quickly rushing out to grab the sunbeds before they all went! some people wanted to help put ... read more

The worst hostel in Sydney Returning to Sydney for our second stint (blog: ), although not before Jason had completed his Giant Stairway challenge in the Blue Mountains (blog: ), we got the train back and checked into a hostel that was to be our home for the next three nights - Maze Backpackers. I have to put a health warning here - I feel it is my duty to warn other backpackers about this hell hole! We had already been warned that the hostel was not the best around (but we couldn't find any other accommodation in our price range, as Sydney was fully booked everywhere - maybe it had something to do with the bad weather in the north of Oz!). We checked in and found our room after being given the wrong ... read more

Travels in Tasmania February 9-16 How does one describe Tasmania, the smallest state in such a huge country? Much like our own Newfoundland, Tassie (as it is called in the usual Aussie shorthand) is often the brunt of barbs and jokes…the backward state. However, Tasmania seems to be a microcosm of all that this great country has to offer-stunning sea scapes, rolling hills, fertile valleys, magnificent scenery, terrific fresh seafood and produce and friendly people. Our first week here has continued to provide a variety of experiences that have made each day different. The three and a half hour drive from Devonport, where the ferry landed, to our beach house home in St. Helens was broken by our first taste of the fresh food that has become a highlight of our visit. The best muffins we ... read more

I know we've only been here 10 days, but the ocean calls, so we head on down (3hours drive South from Syndey) to Jervis Bay. When looking at Australia on Google Earth before we left the UK, Mike had spotted the white beaches (apparently some of the whitest in the world) at Jervis Bay, so the decision of where to go for our first weekend away was easy...we booked into a B&B in Vincentia, Jervis Bay. We found a gem of a B&B, called Dunes (www.dunes-bnb.com.au). Sandra, the owner, was wonderful. She couldn't have provided a better service if she tried. Our room was lovely and she had thought of everything, a spare sun hat and sunscreen, all the little touches that make you want to go back. She even made a packed breakfast for Mike ... read more

We caught the Manly ferry from Central Quay. It was absolutely jam-packed with hundreds of passengers. The half hour cruise is very scenic. We had half an hour on the beach - seeing our first Aussie surfers. The sun was very strong. We decided to do the walk to 'The Spit' along the bay. It undulates in an out of lovely coves (dotted with affluent housing). In one remote bay we came upon a wedding party on the beach sipping champagne and having photos taken. The walk was quite exhausting and it was a relief to reach the Spit for the bus journey back to Manly and then the much quieter return ferry trip to Central Quay. ... read more

We touched down down under and were convinced we had made a massive detour back to the UK. Rain was bouncing off the runway and our little faces dropped. Our sunshine adventure seemed all but over. Rosie didn't even have a waterproof :( Nevertheless we battled on and spent 2 days in rainy Cairns, mostly drowning our sorrows. One night we ended up having a lock-in in a bar/internet cafe where we had spent a lot of time. As the live music ended for the night, the musicians and bar staff gradually congregted around the prettiest(/only) girls in the bar and the real entertainment began. We were treated to some genuine Aussie tunes and banter, ranging from 'Give me a home among the gumtrees', complete with ridiculous actions, to Britney, to Savage Garden, to Adam Sandler's ... read more

We were told about this place from people we met up the east coast so decided to check it out. We headed up there from Hervey Bay and that night was booked onto the tour to go down the beach and watch sea turtle hatchlings coming out of the sand and try to make their way to the water. Well we got lucky that night as there are no garentees how long you will have to wait to see something. We were pretty much straight out there watching a big sea turtle laying her eggs in the sand, after she popped out 130 eggs she covered them up and slowly made her way back to the sea where she would continue on her life as normal never to return back to see her babies! We had ... read more

Our last day on the GBR - a sad day. However, we had an early start with a 6:00am dive briefing and then the dive itself. Saw a shark and turtle - possibly two of each (or the same one twice!). Our second dive was ok - a poor start but the dive got better and better - the GBR is really amazing! And often the best sights are closer to the top, so the guys who snorkelled probably saw just as many amazing sights. Our final dive was great as it ended as we began - with a shark! The trip back to Cairns was ok - making the most of being out at sea. The crew made the transition from ship to shore easy, altho' we both felt a bit wobbly for the next ... read more

Just on our last few days in Melbourne before setting off to Canberra for a few days and then to Sydney!!! Currently sitting in an internet cafe in St Kilda before hitting the beach for the day and a night out in central Melbourne on the night! It's been quite odd to think that its fairly hot here and cold over at home, very confusing seeing signs everywhere saying Summer 2007! Well our stay in Melbourne has been lots of fun so far! On our arrival to our first hostel (Urban Central Backpackers) I can honestly say it felt like I was returning to halls at uni! Everyone seemed like they knew each other, there was a common room with a bar, a communal kitchen and a dining room. Then there was the dorm and our ... read more
