"I cannot rest from travel: I will drink Life to the lees: all times I have enjoyed Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those That loved me, and alone;" ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson, "Ulysses" On Kho Phanang, I stayed @ a ridiculous guest house. I paid $3 per night and had a great view of the main beach called Had Rin (home to the Full Moon Party). The guy who owns the guesthouse (we'll call him Krusty) is the ultimate clown. When I first showed up to the guesthouse it was 11 in the morning and I was surprised to see that he was already drinking a beer. He "wooed" me with his charming personality and convinced me to stay @ his guesthouse for the next 5 nights leading up to the full moon party. ... read more

Big news!! Mom, you know how you always said you wanted to be a grandmother?? welll....guess what?? haha...just kidding....dont hold your breath on that one. However, I was unable to bump back my flight and will be home in a week...crrripes. On my last flight I was sitting beside this very funny Aussie Cat. It was pretty early in the morning and the captain of our flight interrupted our conversation over the loud speakers with the usual flight banter. He said "welcome aboard everyone. Our cruising altitude will be 32,000 feet and the temperature in Bangkok is 35 degrees celcius. Our expected arrival time is 9:36am. I hope you enjoy your flight and your travels". He then intends to sign off, but accidentily doesnt turn off the microphone. He goes on talking with his co-pilot. He ... read more

Hopefully you all read days 1-6 on the trek to Everest...if not, go back and do it...NOW!! dont worry, I'll wait for you. You cant see the whole world from the top of Everest....The view from there only reminds you how big the world is & how much more there is to see & learn". Tenzing Norgay, spoken to his son, who has now also summited Everest Day 7- Today was another long yet rewarding walk. The mountains and views become more and more spectacular the higher you are. My blisters are not improving at all. After several hours I start feeling sorry for myself, that is until I see a porter with about 300 lbs of plywood on his back as he climbs a 60 degree slippery incline in rubber sandals....these guys are as ... read more

If a rule is implemented in a 3rd world country and yet nobody knows about it, does the rule even exist??? I know you're waiting to hear all about Everest, but this is story is just too ribonkulous and needs to be written while she's still fresh. In order to save a couple hundy, I opted to have a 1 night layover in Dhaka, Bangladesh on the way to Nepal and upon my return to Bangkok. Don't feel bad if you dont know where Dhaka is either, I thought it was in India and was made to look like a fool when I went to the Indian Embassy and confidently told the employee that I was going to Dhaka...to which he laughed in my face and essentially said "are you retarded? Dhaka isn't in India"....I ... read more

Prep Day: Day prior to leaving for Everest was a hectic one. Unless weather up at base camp was to be a balmy 30 degrees celcius, I was in need of some new gear. Our guide, Dharma, took Oto and I to a little spot where we got all the necessary gear for the trek. Here's a list of my new kit: *Down Jacket *Polar Fleece *Thermals *Tuque *Gloves *Hiking Boots (which I would soon want to burn) *4 pairs of wool socks *Diamox (altitude sickness pills) *A new inhaler (I used to have terrible asthma & was hospitalized a couple times as a kid, and also led my class in missed school days up until grade 5....doubt she'll come back, but you can never be too safe!) *A new bag...I bought this, which could ... read more

"A person needs at intervals to separate from family and companions and go to new places. One must go without familiars in order to be open to influences, to change" Katharine Hathaway Over my travels, I've been fortunate to be able to travel with alot of great people. I've travelled with one of my oldest and best friends, my cousin, some of my closesf friends from the Hammer and even an ex-girlfriend. As my trip approaches its final month, I felt that it was time to go off and do something completely on my own, kept company by only nature. I feel that there is no better place to do such a thing than at the worlds largest mountain. I feel that climbing up Mount Everest will allow me some great time for some reflection ... read more

Prior to the Killing Fields, we were taken to a firing range. When we first arrived, we were asked to sit down and a we were brought Menu's. These were not your usual menu's with Pad Thai and Tuna Sandwiches, but instead the options looked something like this: Ak-47- $15 for 15 bullets Tommy Gun- $15 for 15 bullets Colt 45 (the gun, not the drink) -$15 for 15 bullets etc...etc.. Dessert Hand Grenade- 1 for $150 Rocket Launcher- 1 for $250 Coca-Cola- 1 for $.50 Sprite- 1 for $.50 I tried taking a picture, but was quickly stopped by the employees. While I contemplated the tempting thought of being able to say that I fired an AK47, the more I thought about it, the more I was sure that I didn't want to. Thinking ... read more

Genocide. In a Utopian society, this word would be solely a collection of vowels and consenants forming a ficticious word. Unfortunately, our world is anything but Utopian and the people of Cambodia are far too aware of this sense of idealism. Americans had spent the early 70's (and $7 Billion) secretly bombing Cambodia for their involvement in the Viet Nam war. As if the thousands that were killed were not enough for an already impoverished country, from 1975-1979, a group called the Khmer Rouge, overthrew the government in Cambodia and reaked terror on all citizens within firing distance. The capital city of Phnom Penh became home to vicious murders and heinous atrocities. All citizens had to leave the city immediately, with only the clothes on their backs and the food that they could carry with ... read more
