Check out Scarborough at night -- to see Scarborough during the day, check out my other blog on Scarborough Just wanted to post some pics here taken from an impromptu visit to the beach a couple of nights' ago. I had to jump out of the car to catch the sunset on time, took some photos of the emptying beach, watched people dance like fools in the rave party, took a long walk on the sand, then had seafood dinner at Jimmy Dean's overlooking the beach .... read more

It's summer and the bikinis and surfboards and SHARKS are out in Australia!!! To sample the famous beaches in our part of the world here in Western Australia, we went to Scarborough Beach. It's a scene out of Baywatch, complete with the lifeguards, the (pale) sunblocked bodies baking in the sun, the surfer dudes but minus the very Aussie Shark Patrol (!!!). The beaches of Perth are part of the Indian Ocean and they say learning to surf here with sharks in the water are as common as people learning to drive in the US! During our trip to Scarborough, the Shark Patrol (a helicopter that does its rounds every 30 minutes) had a few shark sightings usually indicated by the helicopter going round and round a certain area and the Rescue speedboat coming towards the ... read more

greetings from the southern hemisphere. it's been a hectic few days. friday was the first day of a 5 day celebrating the end of ramadan. we found this out at the bus station in mersing as all the buses were booked up. we ended up making the 134km journey to johor bahru by taxi, we thought 30 euro was a good price. our hotel was right beside the border so on saturday we walked across the border to visit the zoo. the singapore crossing was a like an airport, you even had to put your bags and anything in your pocket through an x-ray machine. had great fun at the zoo, lots of large open space for the animals to walk around. the orangutans were free to swing in the treetops over peoples heads. in the ... read more

Before I went to work today, Anne-Marie and I went to Scarborough! It's another small seaside town not far north of Cottesloe. The beach is gorgeous, the sea is a lovely shade of green. We didn't bring our cossies because we didn't have long before I had to get back, to go to work, but as soon as we saw the sea we wanted to go in. It was a really nice, sunny day today. We sat on the beach for a couple of hours watching the surfers. The waves were huge. For lunch, we had fish and chips at Peter's on the Sea and then I had to head back so that I could get to work for 3pm. Anne-Marie walked the three-hour walk home along the coast. ... read more

Just a few days to go till I fly out now and I can't wait! I've stuck a map up to show the countries I plan to be trekking around. Plans might change during the trip, who knows, but this is the current path I'm planning to make my way along. The gear has been bought, the bag has had a trial packing, and now its just chalk lines on the wall as I count down to flying out.... read more

Current Mood: Ready for work Ok so Melbourne was a blast.. the drinks were finally killing me and my decision to leave was certain. Saying goodbye to Lewy and a few others myself and Anne jumped a shuttle bus to the airport where she would be heading to New Zealand and myself to see my cousin Chris in Perth. I couldn’t wait to take a little bit of rest from my week of binge drinking. So the airport was dead quiet for a Friday night like normally there are people everywhere. Looking for the most comfortable bench Anne and I set our things up for a night of sleeping on airport floors. Oh the fun of backpacking. Don’t for one minute think I’m having fun at home guys!! It’s a hard long road. With spats of ... read more

So today i reckon i have biked around 25km, though i didnt work it out too precisely. I biked 12.5km south to scarborough, and then obviously back again! Why did i do this i hear you cry? well this week is the australian surf life saving championships, and today was masters day. Seeing as the weather was good i decided to take the oppurtunity to go and see some of the action. Having met the cleaners (after a little surprise!) I headed out with my usual gear at about 10:15. Biked straight to the beach and then went all the way along the coastal foot/bike path to scarborough. The bike was amazing. To have the amazing ocean on one side, and then some impressive houses on the other was fantastic. I kept stopping to admire the ... read more

G'day you flaming mongrels, We are now in the land of the kangaroo and having a great time. We have been here just over a week and its flaming hot. Its been over 35 degrees every day so we've spent our time on the awesome beaches or in the gnarly waters. We are staying with our friends Phil and Matt who have an ace place complete with spa pool, roof terrace and of course giant bbq's. Phil has dished up some great tucker from the barbie and we've taken it in turns to throw on the prawns and the snags. You Beauty. The weekend was Australia Day so everyone dressed up in Aussie colours and flags (or convicts outfits as some of us did!). Phil and Matt hosted a great party with loads of beers and ... read more

Hey everyone, we have just got back from 3 days on the beach, it was baking hot and pretty awesome. over 40 degrees, so the tan is improving but im trying to cover up as much as possible. We got there just in time to watch the beach cricket world cup, which was class, its on skysports if you try and catch a repeat i will have been on tv as we where in the main area. England won, which was great so we got to give some abuse to the aussies. The lodge we stayed in was like a shared house, great people and really good laugh. Went bodyboarding which was cool as the waves where insane at times. Did the gayest thing i've ever done and watched the sunset with stu, some great pics ... read more

A Happy Day. We had an early meeting with Helena my Penfriend of 50 years and her husband See Mung who have lived in S'pore all their lives and who's family is similar to ours. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to sample the locality and customs beyond our westernised hotel and it's immediate surroundings and fast food enviroment. We began with a traditional chinese breakfast, did much sightseing including a trip to the famous Orchard Road all decked out for Christmas and seething with shoppers. Among them we bumped into our previous aquaintance of the day before, the Indian lady's husband - still apparently not speaking to her. He told us he'd sat most of the day outside whilst his wife and daughter shopped. The. day ended with a night safari and fond goodbyes. ... read more
