We arrived in Airlie beach in the morning at 9am after a mammoth 13 hour coach ride.  I thought at one point my legs wouldn't work, but they hadn't failed me yet and this was no exception.  Happy days ! After a short walk passed part of the marina I got to Nomads hostel where we would be staying for 2 nights before heading off on our Whitsunday boat - The Atlantic Clipper.  I won't muck about and talk about Airlie Beach too much as it's basically a functional resort servicing the boats and the backpackers that go on them. So on to the main event. I will try to put into words what has become the highlight of my entire trip.  Our boat, the Atlantic clipper, was a huge vessel catering for 54 people plus ... read more

Wednesday 23 March: We arrived at 2.25 am in Airlie Beach and we walked from the Greyhound bus stop to our hostel called Base and we had to call the security so they could open the door for us and they gave us the room keys. When I opened the room of the dorm I saw my Canadian friend Mike which I met in Hervey Bay before. We talked about our Fraser Island trip and went to bed. Thursday 24 March: We had breakfast, went on the internet and picked up our tickets for Whitsundays from Oz Sail. They told us there was a probem with the engine from our original boat Freight Train, that's why they put us on Matador. We went to the Lagoon, which is a giant swimming pool close to the beach. ... read more

Hi everyone, we are currently in Cairns waiting to check in to our hostel and very tired after the best weekend ever! If you ever get to go to Oz then we would recommend this and go on the bommerang. We got Airlie Beach on the 22nd and checked in our luggage etc and made our way to the boat for 13:45. By this time we had met an Irish guy called Eddie, who lives in Melbourne and 2 English guys called Matt and Lee, who are at present travelling but may look to move to New Zealand. We all got on to the boat and met the crew - Max, Kane, Jordan and Renee. We were shown a few sailing techniques and off we went. We first of all went to Black Island and done ... read more

Up early again - our last day on the boat.!' Down for breakfast at 07:00, but we are told to pack our bags before breakfast and leave them in the library, as the girls will make a start in cleaning the rooms. We did as we were told and packed up and went for breakfast. The captain sets off while we are eating breakfast, this is the first time we have been eating on the move. This is not a problem as the vessel is unbelievably stable, and we have felt very little movement the whole of the voyage - so Di's fears and the need for sea-sickness pills was unfounded. We then had to settle our bar tab for the cruise, the wine on the vessel was quite reasonably priced so this is relatively painless. ... read more

We are up at 06:00. I ask Di how she has slept; she says that she has not as she has been worried about the walk to the beach. We have been told that to get to the beach involves a 600-metre walk through the rain forest with the slight possibility of coming across snakes and spiders, of which Di is too fond! (Although she says that she did not sleep I did hear her snoring in the night!) We go for breakfast at 07:00 (breakfast is served from 07:00 until 09:00). As well as the usual cereal, toast fruit and fruit juices, they have a special every morning. This morning it is Vanilla Pancakes with blackberry couli. I try the special – it is great. At 09:00 the vessel makes off to the beach, which ... read more

We were up early not like you could sleep in, I was dying from the heat in the boat. We had breakfast first and then suited up to go snorkeling again. We got to snorkel in the bay we were already parked in so we hopped into the zodiac and slid into the water. There is a big fish here called Elvis and another called Priscilla. They are huge fish and very friendly. I did get to see him swimming around but I didn't get too close. Another boat full of people got in the water with us and they kind of over took the area so our little group swam over to another area to see more coral. They were throwing bread into the water again to attract the fish. These ones get right up ... read more

We are up at around 7:00 and go for breakfast at around 08:00. When we return to our room the luggage has been packed up and moved to reception. We checked out and got a courtesy car to the marina to catch our ferry to the mainland (Shute Harbour) We then got a bus to take us to the Abel point marina to check-in for the sail, but we are sailing with Whitsundays Sailing Adventure, and we find out that we need to check in at the office in the main street of Airlie Beach so we have a 10 min walk back to their office in town. We check in and find out that there are only a total of 8 people on this sailing! It is about lunctime now so we take the opportunity ... read more

We were up early and all packed and the hotel let us leave our stuff in their storage. We ordered a taxi to take us down to the harbour as we didn't want to leave our car down their for 2 days. We met several others waiting for the same boat while we waited. There was mostly young backpackers. One young backpacker had her aunt with her so mom and dad weren't the only older people. However, all the backpackers were either from Germany or Switzerland or Austria and all spoke some form of German. We got all checked in with the guy from the boat and were given our stinger suit for snorkeling. Then we proceeded down to the boat. The boat is designed to sleep 23 people but I think it would be very ... read more
