Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

The Hervey Bay hostel was the best I've come across thus far. The four of us (me, Hannah, Kerry, and Kes (all UK)) each paid $28 and got a private lodge with ensuite. Colonial Backpacker YHA is the name. The lounge area had a computer center, lounge, and dining area, and it was all continuous with the outside patio and pool. They also offered dinner every night (for a price, of course). Our Greyhound was scheduled to leave Hervey Bay for Airlie Beach at 8:30 pm on Friday night, so before we left, we decided to partake in Five Dollar Friday.. [View Full Entry]

BEAUTIFUL!

We have spend a few days in this beautiful area, on the south west tip of Gloucester Island after travelling from Double Bay through Grassy Island and Olden Island. On the main land side of the passage their are two resorts, Montes open since 1975 and the Eco Resort open 5 years ago, its great to anchor right across from them, we go for Cappuchinos or after noon drinks and watch the sun sets, which are spectacular and chat with the locals. We will stay here for a few more days before heading into Bowen. This morning after our morning walk [View Full Entry]

Am still in the Whitsundays and it remains as beautiful as ever... The sun is shining and the water is perfectly still, so motor sailing it is for the time being. After spending the night at Airlie Beach Hotel, my suitcase and I dragged ourselves along the boardwalk to the abel point marina to re-board Windjammer. Felt ‘at home’ as soon as I stepped back on the boat, whilst wearing my usual boat attire of bikini and shorts (and always barefoot as I am on ‘barefoot cruises’ after all!). We set sail from the marina and made our way past Noble [View Full Entry]

We faced the possibility of being herded, and booked a day trip on Reef Jet to get to see the Whitsunday Islands and do some snorkelling on the reef. And we had a lush day, didn't feel like cattle being moved here and there en masse, in fact it was very chilled and pleasant. We spent an hour or so snorkelling just off Border Island, where the coral is fantastic. It's amazing to see this whole different world under the water. We wore stinger suits, as advised, as those pesky marine jellyfish are still at large, although we didn't see any. [View Full Entry]

Stinger Suits You Sir!

This are some of the routes we have done last year. Some more detailed maps to come, buy request of my dad who lives in Santiago, Chile and following us via his computer at home. Hi Dad..... Mackay to Airlie Beach and islands as marked on the maps, called the central group. This year we are doing the Airlie Beach to Cairns route, this maps shows the northern group from Airlie to Bowen, the rest to follow. We spend one night at Woodwark Bay one hour north of Airlie, and today we are at Double Bay East, staying the night and [View Full Entry]

Welcome to the world just under the surface. The ancestors of the human species came out of the water and onto dry land some time ago; I just went back, albeit cheating with snorkeling gear. Anyone that lays their eyes on this stuff should come to appreciate the delicate ecosystems that the oceans house. Mine has just been expanded. The multi coloured coral provide a safe habitat for the numerous fish that seek protection from larger predators, evident by the lack of concern the fish show at our presence. Spent some time on my private little beach, trying to capture the [View Full Entry]

Next port of call on our journey down the east coast of Australia was Airlie Beach which is mainly visited as it is the departure point for the infamous Whitsunday islands. We got the early afternoon bus from Townsville having battled through extreme tiredness to watch the dissapointing 0-0 draw between United and Barcelona. Arriving in Airlie Beach, having passed through the miles upon miles of sugar cane fields, we did a brief town cruise from the bus and saw the "beach". Locals question the name Airlie Beach as there really isn't much of a beach. Daft Aussies. Anyway, we checked [View Full Entry]

Am in the Whitsundays - woo hoo! Had a very early start on Tuesday morning (the earliest so far) and set off to Hamilton Island on a very tiny plane with just two propellers (and I had my doubts whether or not it had an engine until we did the ‘engine tests’ on the runway before takeoff). Flying conditions were actually perfect and so could see the Great Barrier Reef from above, such a stunning sight. Arrived in the Whitsundays and hopped on the Fantasea ferry to Shute Harbour. Sat in the sunshine drinking Nestle Green Tea (my new favourite drink) [View Full Entry]

20 April - 23 April We went out for one last time in Balmain on Saturday night with everyone but did get home in good time. Because I (betsy) was still struggling from my work night out the previous night I didn't have much to drink. We had to move out of our apartment and meet the taxi for 6:30am. It was a very early start! But we got out, dropped off our keys and went to the airport in time. We landed in Airlie Beach around 3:00pm and went to check in with our boat. We were travelling with Southern [View Full Entry]
