Amanha comecao as ... read more

Ayr > Bowen > Airlie Beach > Mackay > Sarina Ayr is a town near the delta of the Burdekin River, named after the Scottish town of Ayr by the early settlers. As with most of the coast up here in FNQ sugar is a dominant feature of the landscape and the Burdekin Shire, in which Ayr, and Home Hill lie, is no exception. The Burdekin Shire, produces the most sugar cane per square kilometre in Australia utilising underground water supplies and water from the Burdekin Dam to irrigate crops when rains fail, (seems unlikely when they measure the stuff in metres up here!), but it does get dry outside of the wet season. Ayr and Home Hill are sugar towns and between them have all the infrastructure required to support the town and farming communities ... read more

Another one of the trips we had left to do was the Whitsundays sailing that we had booked. We arrived in Airlie the day before we sailed off; this was a really lovely little town and we had a fairly nice hostel (Nomads) with its own pool. The next day we left to go and get on our boat- the New Horizon. When we turned up there were also a lot of people there who were sailing on the party boat- the Clipper. When they split us into our boats and we set off we soon realised that the clipper was an entire boat of boys and we were on an entire boat of girls. Lucky for the guys five Swedish girls saw an opportunity and paid $100 to change onto their boat(!) I had seen ... read more

This morning we got picked up from our campsite (Flame trees) at 8.40am for our day tour to the Whitsundays. We went with a company called Ocean Rafting and our boat was called Thunderstruck. We set off on the boat which was designed to be a lifeboat (700 HP!) It was a very fast and bumpy ride, lots of fun! We got to our snorkelling location which was in the outer barrier reef. We snorkelled for approximately 45 mins. It was amazing to see all the coral and the tropical fish swimming beneath us. After that we got back on the boat and went to one of the islands. We went to a look out point called Hill Inlet which was off Tongue Bay. We did a short bush walk up to the lookout point where ... read more

Well we have checked our of our cell in the youth hostel in Airlie Beach to be honest we did get a good nights sleep so not all bad. Whilst waiting to board the catamaran we have been doing quite a bit of admin work. We now have booked our Greyhound Bus from Hervey Bay to Brisbane Airport where we will be picking up a hire car - then we will be staying with Mike’s daughter Jenni for a few days before flying off to Sydney. We have also got a studio apartment in Sydney which is very central - anyone looking for reasonable accommodation should check out Airbnb website - we seem to get some really reasonable accommodation at reasonable prices through them. It is really hot in Airlie Beach today so I think there ... read more

The overnight journey was event less and we arrived at Airlie in the morning, allowing plenty of time to check in the boat, leave our packs at our hostel and grab some alcohol before boarding our catamaran just after lunch. We were introduced to our fellow ten travellers and two crew. We hadn't known what to expect really, whitsundays is on every backpackers list but also on most Australian's to do list, we chose a non party boat, of which there were not many. So we expected a group of older people and only bought alcohol so we had something of a distraction, but we were pleasantly surprised to be amongst our own, all twelve of us were early twenties and either backpacking or working with the one year visa. We hadn't afforded the private room ... read more

The Whitsundays are a combination of 74 islands on the bottom half of the Great Barrier Reef with stunning views and beautiful aquatic life. Which makes it very popular for amongst every kind of traveler. Arlie beach is the departure town for all the Whitsunday boats and they’re is a boat for every kind of traveler. The Atlantic clipper is known as the party boat of the Whitsunday's which is why I picked it. It holds 52 people + crew but at no time do you ever feel that their are too many people on the boat or that it is too small. Most rooms house 3 people, there is a hot tub and a diving board and a slide on the boat. The boat has everything you need from really good food to snorkeling gear, ... read more

Hi, So the last time I checked in, we were just getting ready to head off on our boat trip around the infamous Whitsundays. It is made up of 74 Islands, but we visited 2, as we were there for such a short time! We boarded our ship, the "broomstick" and met our captain Rob, skipper Andy and helpers, Abbie and Caitlin. Some of the Welsh girls were on the trip, so it was nice to catch up with them again. They are so nice. We left around 2pm and headed off to do some snorkling. I was so exhausted, having had limited sleep on the overnight bus, so all i wanted to do was have a bit of a sleep. So while alot of the others braved the ice cold water, I had a cuppa ... read more

We went on a two day cruise of on a boat called Avatar which was a trimaran. It was a cool boat and we got our own cabin/sleeping hole in one of the side pods. The weather was lovely and the views were beautiful. We got to go snorkelling on the part of the Great Barrier Reef which was good but I think we were spoilt in Thailand and here it didn't quite compare! The food was delicious and it was good fun living on the boat for a few days. We made a few good friends as well. At night the stars were amazing, Rachel saw a few shooting start although Paul doesn't beleive her! We went to Whitehaven Beach which is 90% silica which gives it the white appearance. You could exfoliate, brush your ... read more
