Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Another long time (24 days) with no blog entry for us, but we have been busy busy working! We are still working in Clubmed on Lindeman island and have now been here for over a month, the longest time we have stayed in one place for over 6 months, and it is starting to feel like home! Here are a few snipets of what we have been upto... Our jobs are both going well, the resort has been very busy and we have had a lot of hours availible to work. Adam was working in the conference section last week and [View Full Entry]

Finally, a bit of luxury! With the van parked up for 4 days we took a boat to Daydream Island, one of the Whitsunday Islands. Everyone we know who has been, says how beautiful they are, and they were right! Absolutely gorgeous! Obviously, staying in a hotel meant no cooking and massive brekkies aswell - double bonus! So we spent a few days chilling by the pool and looking in rock pools (which Bella loves, but scares me to death) We also did a trip to Hamilton Island, where lots of very rich people live (we didn't hang around for long!) The Whitsundays are truly gorgeous. I set sail on the Prima sail boat with 11 other people. The boat was err cosy, but it had everything we needed. I befriended the Captain and he let me steer the boat and showed me how the sailing works and how to navigate. In between this, I managed to sunbathe (well, burn) on the deck and look out and the blue sea. Within minutes of getting out of the harbor we saw humpback whales shooting out water and breaching. Of course, they timed it so that you just got your camera out and then [View Full Entry]

Hello All! We thought we'd be cutting down on the blogs but it seems there is still things to write about even when we are on our island working! Here is some details on our first few weeks of work and settling in to island life... We caught a few boats over to Lindeman island where we had landed our jobs and it looke beautiful on the way in. We were greeted by HR at the jetty and given a quick tour of the resort as we got the bus to our ne home. Clubmed is the only thing on Lindeman [View Full Entry]

Ahoy Sailor ... We almost made it on time, thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Slow - Will and Barbie - Zoe, Tom was not coming with us as he has already done the island,. not that we really mind anyway. After our briefing on what to do and what not to do on a boat by funny Italian guy, we met our Skipper - John and our cook and entertainer - Harlen. Rest of passengers were all from England and Ireland, what a surprise... and they did also look like lots of fun.. not. Wow..... what happened to the sea, why [View Full Entry]

Hello Hello!! I just spent 6 dollars for 30 minutes of time on the internet, so I don't have much time to update. And just for all of you who have been bugging me, I will be putting up pictures next weekend, you will just have to wait! But don't worry, they are all amazing and beautiful and will be sure to make you insanely jealous of me :) Every day I keep reminding myself how incredibly lucky I am to be here. It is absolutely amazing and definitely a dream come true. I couldn't be happier. I was a mature [View Full Entry]

10th July 2008 - Our Last Day of the Whitsundays We woke up early today, had breakfast and were then taken over to Langford Beach - a sand cay - for our last snorkel. The coral was probably just an inch below the surface off the shore and you arent supposed to touch the coral at all which was....um.....impossible!! We must have destroyed a lot of the Great Barrier Reef that day for which we are very sorry but it just couldnt be helped! I cut my knee on the way in and just after taking my flippers off I [View Full Entry]

9th July - The Blender Effect After a great toilet demonstration yesterday: 1) fill the basin with water, 2) go to the toilet, 3) Blend, 4) Flush it, 5) Flush it, 6) Flush it again (so it doesnt come back to haunt you), we were all very careful to get it right. It's a long process! After thinking it might be the rocking motion of the ship that would keep us up at night it was nothing compared to the sound of 5 seperate toilets all over the ship being used throughout the night. We got up tired and praying [View Full Entry]

8th July - Licking Ants Bums at Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays We got up at 7.30 am and headed to Gloria's Cafe to meet the crew and the other people we would be spending the next three days with! We were all given a small blue bag yesterday (apparently you can't take backpacks on the ship in case you spread bed bugs). We were pretty much just told to bring a bikini, a jumper, a toothbrush and deodrant. Stacey, the ship's Cook, gave us a brief introduction to the ship and then we all got on board. The ship is lovely. [View Full Entry]

Mmmm Sexy

Just got back from my sailing trip- am exhausted but it was really good fun. Arrived on the boat and the first thing we did was take off our shoes and put them in a big bag- to be returned to us only when we set foot off the boat. On the first day we went snorkelling, but the water was really cloudy so i only lasted about 5 minutes before i froze to death/ got bored - and went back to the boat! Plus there were rumours of jellyfish and i really didnt fancy being stung by one seeing as [View Full Entry]
