Hazel & Mark

We are taking a year to travel around Southeast Asia. We fly out to Australia on the 17th Dec and will spend Christmas and New Year staying with family in Sydney. We are then going to fly to Auckland and spend a couple of months in New Zealand before returning to a round tour of Australia for another couple of months. By May time we should be back in Sydney and will then plan the rest of the tour of countries including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam...
(Apologies in advance from Mark for the inevitable spelling mistakes).

Asia » Malaysia November 27th 2013

So here we are, our last blog entry! The plan for our final leg was to take the train from Singapore back to Bangkok, from where we pick up our long-haul flight home, stopping at Ipoh and Langkawi on the way. The idea was to get some final sunshine on the beach in Langkawi and to have some good Malaysian food as well, before heading home to cold weather and having to cook for ourselves... Unfortunately, the weather man had other ideas, but at least we had some good food! Landing in Singapore from Manila was like heaven, as once again we were graced with the calm, clean streets and polite Singaporeans. This time we stayed in a lovely hotel near Orchard Road, where we made good use of the pool and gym on our first ... read more

Asia » Philippines November 15th 2013

We had seriously high hopes for the Philippines, as we'd heard it described by a few people as an absolute beach paradise. So, back in August, we dug out our trusty Lonely Planet and found the following advice: "If it's white sand, rum and coconuts you're after, look no further than the the Visayas...beach bums and divers should select a Visayan island and go" Unfortunately, there was another section of the guide book that we didn't pay quite enough attention to: "The Philippines certainly has more than its share of dangers. Typhoons, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, landslides and other natural disasters can wreak havoc with your travel plans" As some of you will know, we don't always have the best luck with our travel plans vs. natural disasters, as we've had two long haul holidays scuppered by ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok October 25th 2013

After a few major essays on our blog, we've tried to keep this one as short as possible. This entry is also about our island hopping around Indonesia, so we have to admit that we haven't really been doing much... After all that early-morning volcano climbing in Java, we thought we were due a bit of R&R! We crossed from Java to Bali and did a circular trip to the Gili islands and down to southern Lombok before returning to Bali, ready to fly on to the Philippines. We arrived in Bali by car ferry from Banyuwangi and our bus dropped us outside the capital, Denpasar. From here we taxied our way through the dense traffic to Ubud, known for being the cultural centre of the island. We had booked into a traditional Balinese homestay and ... read more

After a long day travelling from Hong Kong, we eventually transited out of Singapore and took an evening flight to Jakarta. As the plane came down we could see many brightly lit fishing boats scattered across the sea, which we thought at first were the runway lights and were confused as to why we weren't landing (in our defence, it had been a 14 hour journey)! It took a while to get from the airport to the city - the taxi driver told us "Friday night is always busy in Jakarta". Having said that, every taxi/bus we took during our 3 day stay got stuck on roads clogged with traffic, so we're not sure it was just a Friday thing! We were so tired that we slept well on our first night, despite the local mosque ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong October 7th 2013

Woah! After seven full days of non-stop Hong Kong sightseeing, we are now able to take a break as we travel across to Indonesia. Apologies for the length of this entry but we've been busy... We had read about Hong Kong being a 'walking city' and our feet will definitely testify to that! It was great to be in the thick of the action as the streets were crowded with people all seemingly on a mission. We couldn't help but quicken our pace around the city as though we had somewhere to be too! We found Hong Kong quite an expensive place, so had a couple of pot noodle nights in to relieve the budget (and also because we were so tired after our excursions that we couldn't be bothered to venture far for food). No ... read more

Asia September 26th 2013

This blog covers our time travelling through Malaysian Borneo. We spent a great deal of our time in national parks and nature reserves seeing endangered monkeys. This means we now have hundreds of monkey photos and have posted a few videos to youtube. (For anyone who is interested the links are posted below.) It has been so good to see these animals in the wild, or at least semi-wild, and we can't begin to describe how much fun we had on our various outings...although we'll give it a try! Our adventure began in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, in north-western Borneo. It's a picturesque city and has a small town vibe where everything moves at a relaxed pace. We were there for Malaysia Day, which is when the Sarawakians celebrate independence and all of Malaysia celebrates ... read more

Asia » Singapore September 12th 2013

This post covers our travel from Kuala Lumpur down to Singapore. It was really cool to spend some time back in large cities again, with a rest in Melaka on the way. We found a noticeable change in the friendliness of the locals in KL and Singapore with more people stopping to ask us whether we needed help with directions. Not that we often looked lost or anything, I hasten to add... We landed in KL airport and took the skybus into KL Sentral. We then took the monorail to our hotel which was next to chinatown, so well located for cheap eats (and Petaling Street Market if one was interested in purchasing fake designer watches or pants)! As the evening set in we rode over to the Bukit Bintang area to check out the main ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang August 30th 2013

After a little time in Malaysia, it feels more like home than anywhere else we have visited in Asia so far. Mark is currently pining for a good steak and glass of Malbec, but that's not exactly Malaysia's fault! The Malaysian people are really friendly and speak good English, even in the small market stalls and corner shops. There is also a more noticeable blend of different cultures here, so it feels less like we stand out from the crowd, especially with fewer white tourists around (as it also appears that we had left many of the backpacking/party types behind in Thailand). This could be due to the lack of hedonistic pursuits or that alcohol is more expensive in Malaysia, but either way we feel it is better off without them! As you will see, much ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand August 17th 2013

After popping into and out of Thailand a few times over the last couple of months, it was finally time to explore the beautiful islands and beaches of the southern gulf coast. We'd been looking forward to this since we arrived in Bangkok back in June, and Hazel could barely contain her excitement about the impending quota of sunbathing! We began our beach tour by jumping on the morning train from Bangkok to Hua Hin. As we island-hopped down the Gulf of Thailand, there were fewer real 'sights' to visit and a very different sort of culture to sample - and, with only 15 days on our Thai visas (the land border limit), there was much less time to sample it - so you will be pleased to hear that we have kept the writing short ... read more

Asia » Laos » West August 4th 2013

We didn't really know what to expect when we got there, but it turns out that we like Laos a lot. There are, however, are a few things you have to get used to: Firstly, it's small. Well, not actually, but figuratively - there were at least three couples that turned up everywhere that we went. Which is great for the ones that we liked, but less than ideal for one in particular (more of this later)... Secondly, everyone is really really laid back. Also great in theory, but it takes a bit of getting used to when you're talking about service. Especially as we entered Laos from Thailand, and the staff at our guest house in Chiang Mai were potentially the friendliest and most helpful we have ever met. We've heard the service described as ... read more
