Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hi everyone We're here on daydream island safe and sound. We sat on the beach today and although you can't swim in the sea the pool was close by and very very large. Later on as we were reading our books two wallabies bounced right by us on the sand. They came over really close probably looking for food. The photos are really good and we'll show you back home. We're heading back to the mainland tomorrow, catch you soon, x [View Full Entry]

Wow! Sailing is basically awesome! The last two days have been absolutly amazing. Having never really done any big time sailing before I was pretty keen to get on a big boat and check it out. And what a place to start...sailing round the beautiful Whitsunday Islands in Australia on a Maxi Ocean Racing Yacht! Dan took a few days to do some other things so I boarded the boat on my own and instantly met a load of new people, mainly from France and Germany. The boat was the Mighty Boomerang! An 83ft racing Yacht, 20ft wide with a 110ft [View Full Entry]

Upon arriving back from Fraser Island we jumped on an overnight bus for the gruelling 13 hour trip up to Airlie (pronounced early) Beach for our departure point to the Whitsundays. There are many boats sailing from Airlie Beach so we had decided to wing it and try and get a good standby rate for a boat or one of the island resorts when we got there. We didn't have our heart set on sailing partly due to previous sea sickness and also because most of the boats are maxi yachts, involving pretty cramped conditions, but when a travel agent proposed [View Full Entry]

Hear My Train a Comin’ I now left sunny tropical Cairns and its hostels which seemed to be brimming with German backpackers and headed southwards along the South Pacific coast. This time it would be different: no more catching lifts with random strangers; no more endless hours of driving, filling up at the gas station or more sadly camp sites. No, over here on the east coast there was the novelty of a railway line, several in fact - which after all of the road travel I had done since Perth seemed very appealing. I briefly considered taking the Greyhound bus [View Full Entry]

The Whitsunday Islands are a chain of about 70 islands off the coast of Airlie Beach, surrounded by crystal blue water, reefs loaded with fish and sea life and "officially" the most beautiful beach in the world. Ever. We got picked up for our day cruise on the Manta Ray Boat and quickly realized that we were the only non-couple on board. Everyone else was on a romantic cruise...and then there was us. Awkward. On our way to our first island we saw humpback whales surfacing for air and then diving back down which was such a great surprise and cool [View Full Entry]

3rd July 2009 Airlie Beach is known as the gateway to The Whitsundays and as such there isn't very much to do there and there is barely even a beach. Never the less as always we found a way to fill our day by walking around the coast on the bicentennial walkway. This was a very nice walk around the bay through parks and great views of the coastline. Conveniently it also took us to the local large supermarket to buy our dinner and some beers for the evening. 4th July 2009 One of the other perks of Airlie Beach is [View Full Entry]
