Doug, Lorraine & Hakura

Hakura

Hi, I'm Doug Nicol, who has been sailing around parts of New Zealand in the South Pacific on my 36 foot yacht Hakura (Maori for Grey's beaked whale).

The trip is with Lorraine Miller as my trusted No 1.

Well it has been a very long time since we got back and no updates - naughty boy Cap'n. Crew - Doug Nicol and Lorraine Miller plus Ethan Jones (from Kerikeri in the Bay of Island, NZ). Ethan flew up specially to sail back with us and he did a great job. Thanks Ethan you were a fantastic crew and a pleasure to have on board. Here is a quick summary to let you know what we did and where we're at now. Trip back from Fiji covered 1171 nautical miles (nm) in 7 days 7 and half hours at an average of 6.69 knots. Best day's run was 172 nm (2 days over 170 nm) and lowest run was 155 nm; a quick trip. The Fiji trip had a total of 2950 nm (Opua to ... read more

They only had a limited amount of time left of their holiday before they were due to fly back to NZ so we spent the time retracing steps they had taken last year when sailing with the Captain. I mentioned Navadra Island in my previous blog – this would have been one of Sharon’s favorites I think and where we headed after picking them up from Mana Island. In fact Navadra and Vanua Levu islands ... read more

Anchored off Lawaki Beach Resort was an awesome start to doing this. The Resort itself is not flash, a backpackers haven. You can have a room or pitch a tent. Captains Log: Voyage covered 1257 nautical miles taking 9 days and 18 hours at an average speed of 5.4 knots. Fastest 24 hour run was day 2 at 158 nautical miles with an average of 6.6 knots. The slowest days run was the eighth at 115 nautical miles, an average of 4.8 knots. The Bigger Picture: The return to Opua through the gale was fairly dramatic as can be imagined. The following week was a little fraught as the repairs were made to the boat and a question mark sat over whether we would be able to travel north again or would have to be satisfied exploring some of the New Zealand coast – not a particularly inspiring prospect given the temperatures (I have since heard Auckland has had snow!). Luck was on our side however, ... read more

Customs cleared, the last minute preparations completed, we left Opua Marina at 11.00am on July 16th. Alex was given the first watch. (We work a three hours on, six hours off rotation with kitchen duties assigned to particular shifts.) It was exciting watching Alex’s reactions to everything, his eyes were like swivels in his head as the tried to take it all in as we headed out. The Pacific Ocean stretched before us, and as the New Zealand coastline diminished behind us we settled down and began adapting to the routine that would be our world for the next week or so. I was on watch for the first sunset, and thought back to enjoying the sunrise while on watch when we sailed up to Opua from Whangarei. I called Alex up from below decks ... read more

I would like to tell you that we are sitting in Vava’u soaking in the sun and enjoying island life, but ….. I am sitting, writing this in the Laundromat in the Opua marina while the last load of laundry is washed and dried ready for our departure first thing tomorrow morning, Saturday 16 July 2011. The weather has finally decided to clear enough for us to go and this time, I am sure we will be departing – it feels different somehow, and we can’t wait to get away. Since my last entry a few things of import have happened. Firstly, as it became evident that we would not be able to get away as planned, our crewman Scott had to make the hard decision to leave the boat. He only had a limited time ... read more

No 1 – The bigger picture Okay. So here we are, sat sitting in Opua, still waiting for the weather to clear so we can head up to the warmth. The difference is that over the past few days, instead of the bad weather sitting offshore, on Saturday it moved inshore and we are cold and wet and it gets very windy! So what better time to write another exciting episode in the continuing adventures of the good ship Hakura and all who sail on her … or more specifically, will be sailing on her. There is much to do, see and experience here. Saturday dawned bright and sunny, and as Monday was the planned departure day we decided to walk to Paihia to get supplies and then catch a taxi back from the supermarket to ... read more

In July 2008 I had my first holiday in Fiji in the Yasawa group of islands with John. Now 2 years later I am back, but this time we have been invited on our friend Doug’s yacht ‘Hakura’. It has been a wonderful experience for so many reasons. It’s the best way to see the Islands at your leisure and explore places off the tourist track. It tests you physically (no anchor winch), mentally (what will I cook for dinner?) and it even tests friendships at times. But over this time I felt a nice inner peace & calm, or maybe I was just totally chilled out and enjoying the adventure. John & I met up with Doug & Lorraine in Suva on 26th August (my birthday). We had just had 5 nights on Beqa Island ... read more
