Day 58 We woke early ready and excited for our two day tour of Fraser Island, although Brett was very itchy...since arriving in Australia we havent had to use much insect repellant and it has been nice both being bite free, however last night it was like The Empire Strikes Back as Brett was bitten half a dozen times! Ouch! We were collected from our hostel to the ferry crossing at River Heads. Due to having to pay for our tour we ended up getting on the ferry last and were unable to get past the cars, buses, etc to the paasenger level and had to stand in between all of the cars for the 40 minute journey! We did get VIP treatment at the other side though and were the first to exit along with ... read more

We certainly needed a bigger car! It was probably a little ambitious to take our 4 wheeldrive car to Fraser Island (or K'gari (Paradise) in local Aboriginal dialect - the largest sand island in the World) during the school holidays but, after a lot of researching and planning we decided to give it a go, taking all the safety precautions we could for every eventuality. But there is always the unexpected and the the fact that the car performed so well, we thought it capable of more but had not expected to encounter such deep ruts and pot holes made by large tourist buses and trucks recycling the rubbish at set stations along 75 mile beach as we ventured inland to explore the island. An early 5am start saw us on the road driving north to ... read more

We stayed in Pippies Hostel where we’d booked the tour from and it was a nice and friendly place. We went to Fraser Island in self-drive 4WDs with 11 other backpackers and a leader car with a guide to ensure safe driving. Tag along tours are the new thing for Fraser Island as you now need a guide to follow driving as there had been some bad accidents. Stuart had his go at driving and had fun dodging the waves and trying to not get stuck in the sand (Fraser Island is the world’s biggest sand island). We were really lucky with the weather as the sun shone every day and didn’t get cold in our tents. We camped at an Aborigine site and had camp fires toasting marshmallows listening to the local Aborigine man telling ... read more

This is where the story gets interesting, the next two days didn't go as planned and we will remember it for the wrong reasons. This being said we all had a good experience. We met at Rainbow beach Surf Club with our guide Andrew who was to show us around Fraser Island, we all climed aboard a Toyota Hybrid 4x4 and set off to the ferry at Inskip Point. Once on the island we drove along 75 mile beach which is the main highway beach road along the island. Our first stop was at Eli Creek, here we had the chance to swim or paddle in fresh spring water. CRASH BANG WALLOP!!!!!!!!! This is where our plans took a big change in direction. Before heading on to our next stop we all made use of the ... read more

A couple of extra days are included in this edition as I travelled from the Whitsundays to Hervey Bay and then on to Fraser Island, where I had more sand to play in than I could ever have imagined and swam in the clearest lake water ever. When I returned to Airlie Beach after the fantastic 3 night sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands, I was offered the disabled access room at the hotel for the same cheap internet rate I had previously paid. The room was larger than the last one but the bathroom was crazy big, with enough room to hold a wheelchair basketball tournament. The wet-room style shower was massive and wide so I stuck the radio on and danced like a loon waving my arms around under the powerful water spray - ... read more

From Noosa we caught the Greyhound to Rainbow Beach. We'd heard from other backpackers it was a more relaxed place from which to do Fraser Island and also potentially cheaper than from Hervey Bay. Rainbow is small but cute, we stayed in Pippie's Hostal one of the three options in the town and were able to organise our Fraser trip with them as well. We joined our briefing the day after we arrived and were well versed in the dangers of Fraser Island. Dingoes; be careful not to go anywhere on your own as they will try their luck. Driving; there have been plenty of accidents on the island particularly on self guided trips, only recently a thing of the past because of all the accidents. Sharks; Tiger and Bull sharks along the east coast mean ... read more

WOW....what a fantastic place is Fraser Island, which is part of the Great Sandy Marine Park in QLD. Listed as a World Heritage site in 1992 for its natural features which include lake, soil and forest systems; evolving dunes, unique landscapes and sand-blows; which form when strong onshore winds break through the vegetation cover, driving sand from the eroding dunes and then engulfing forests in their path, a bit like describing a small scale Sahara desert in amongst vegetation. There are fantastic scenic drives and walks, and a 4WD is a pre-requisite when travelling the sandy tracks. Dingos are everywhere on the Island and there is plenty of signage and education for tourists in regards to being Dingo-safe! They may look like dogs but you need to remember they are wild and can attack you. It's ... read more
