As I mentioned in my previous blog, our next stop in Oz was Surfers Paradise where we stayed for 3 nights. Now, I could spend a couple of paragraphs explaining what we did, but since the next couple of stops afterwards are much more interesting I will simply sum up our goings on in one easy sentence. Beach, goon, clubs and repeat. Don't get me wrong, it was a good laugh since we met up with a load of guys we met in Byron and went out with them each night but the city just reminded me of your standard clubbing city somewhere in Greece. I will quickly mention the awesome fun we had zorbing, which if you don't know is basically rolling down a hill in a huge inflatable ball with a little bit of ... read more

Ok so Fraser Island has to be the best experience I have had so far - absolutely a great laugh. We arrived at Hervey Bay and stayed at a hostel called Beaches. It is through Beaches that our Fraser Island and Whitsunday packages are booked through. We stayed on night in Hervey Bay, getting ready for the trip to Fraser the next day. Basically, you get put into a group of 8 and share a 4x4 vehicle. Anyone with a driving license more than 2 years old and is over 21 can drive. Luckily for me and Lynsey, we were the only drivers! Scary thought right! So while me and Lynsey get taught about the vehicles and how to drive in sand and off road, the others went shopping for food and drinks. I was a ... read more

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, we did the 3 day 2 night self drive 4x4 camping tour. On the first day we drove to Indian Head which is a cliff point on the top of Fraser island, then drove to the wreck on the island. We camped behind the beach, cooked dinner in the dark and had to scare away dingoes, everyone on the tour gathered together drinking, playing games and singing to guitar. All four of us bundled into a small tent which was very cosy! Early morning we discovered we had a broken car door so we tied it together with some string! During the day we went to Lake Mackenzie which was beautiful, and again set up camp for the evening. Day 3 we woke up at 6am ... read more

Day 27 Hungover… but not to bad I am up and moving at 8am still after shutting down at around 1:30am that last night, but do I ever look in rough shape, and what better way to cure a hangover then a nice 4 hour walk in a sandblow with direct sun and no shade… Now this is something everyone should have to do, and I don’t mean walk it hungover, but check out some big sand dunes and go running down them. Omg… so much fun was had. We found an odd spider with 2 yellow stripes even, by the end of the walk I was feeling a bit better but not much, Sean and James were starting to burn. About 3 hours alter Sean had a healthy red glow to him if you can ... read more

Day 25 Its 10am the truck is packed and we are off the Fraser Island, and upon arriving at the sandy beach I realize this might not be to easy as the sand was about 6-10 inches deep and the truck was having a tough time chewing its was through, we did enjoy a nice 10 minute ferry ride across and arrived to be driving on hard pack sand. Yes! 2wd here we go. We decide to head to small camp on the west side of the island out of the wind, Ungowa, big mistake… it was us and a group of school kids. So basically they kept to themselves and so did we, although the head teacher was super nice and realized we didn’t have enough ice for our beer and donated a huge slab ... read more

So after surviving the night on Crocodile beach we head off across the Island to Happy Valley. The road across is a challenge and Shenton gets lots of practice using his 4wd skills. The track changes from sandy desert like conditions to lush rainforest and back again. It does take us a good hour to get across to happy valley and we all need some breakfast after our long night! After brekky we head off on our first part of real beach driving. This is fun, the sand is harder and everyone drives on the waters edge with the waves almost touchng the tyres. The beach is beautiful and the surf looks great, but we have to stop Shenton from going in as this definitely is not advisable due to the sharks and crocs in the ... read more

The last day of Fraser Island we drive the other direction towards the Southern Tip to catch the ferry (barge) over to Rainbow beach. We start out at around 10am and I am worried about crossing Eli Creek as I have read that you can only cross 2 hours around low tide, which isn't until 1.30 today. However when we get there, there is nothing to worry about and we cross with a big splash (forgot to wind the windows up again) and we are on our way. We stop at Happy Valley for a drink before we do more beach driving on our way to Lake Wabby which we are going to visit today. Lake Wabby is a 45 minute walk from the beach and you arrive at the top of a big sandblow and ... read more

Today we are going to explore the north of the Island, the whole beach coast line is 75kms so in the morning we head off on the beach again towards Indian Heads. A short walk up the headland gives super views in both directions and the surf does look very tempting but we have to remember that there are all kinds of lethal animals in there so no surfing today. After Indian heads we have to manouver the Tank on a very sandy road behind Indian Heads, which Shenton manages no problems and then we reach the Champagne Pools. These are called this because as the waves break over the pools the bubbles look like Champagne. We have a lovely refreshing dip here before we are off up to the northern most point. I ve had ... read more

Left Noosa today and drove to Hervey Bay to catch a ferry over to Fraser Island. We dont have anything actually booked yet, either Ferry ride or permits for Fraser Island so this will be a bit of an adventure. I have my first drive of the Tank on a deserted road, while Shenton rides cowboy style out of the window. After stopping for lunch at a place called Torquay we try to stock up a littel but as it is Anzac day no big shops are open so we have to shop at a little convenince store, tinned food for our stay on the Island it is then. We manage to get some beer and wine so all is ok. We also manage to get a pump for the tyres as once we get on ... read more

There were really only two things I knew about Fraser Island as I arrived at Rainbow Beach in advance of starting my three day trip to the island; first that it was a big sand island and second that people often died there as a result of driving accidents. I'd booked on a self-drive tour, where me and seven others would hire a 4x4 and camp on the island. Luckily, I knew two of my jeep mates - Olie and Leanne, who I'd travelled with through Africa and had since been working in Western Australia. They were moving south from Cairns and we met at Rainbow Beach, so it was great to catch up on eight months of stories. We met the rest of our group (Caroline from England, Tom from Quebec and David, Sophie and ... read more
