So having arrived in Hervey Bay after a whole day travelling down by road from Airlie Beach on the Greyhound, I just checkin to flashpackers hostel which was fine and then checked out first thing in the morning and head over to Fraser Island for my cool dingo experience! Not good news as it was raining, in fact pooring whilst we crossed on the ferry over to the island, however i was lucky to be sat next to a lovely girl from Oxford whom i became friends with almost straight away. On arrival we all checked into our eco lodge, thank god, no camping for me, or cooking either!!! Much happier to have a bunk bed than do any sort of camping to be honest!!! The 3 day tour was a great laugh and we were ... read more

Hi All! As we're staying with relatives, we are using the opportunity to catch up with some blogs and photos!! After the town of 1770 (named after Captain Cook discovered Australia), we headed for a place called Rainbow Beach which was the starting point for our trip to Fraser Island. We arrived on the greyhound to find that our hostel, aptly named Dingos, was directly across the road so we didn't have to lug our heavy bags too far. Dingos only offered dorm accommodation, so we were put in a dorm of 7 beds (3 bunks and a single) and Anton and I bagged ourselves a little bunk bed (me on top and Anton on bottom). In our room, there were 4 boys going to Fraser Island the next day and a girl called Jenny, who ... read more

So I have finally moved away from Cairns a-woo-hoo! Not that I didn't love it there but it was definitely time to move on. For the last week I have been travelling down the East coast, not spending too much time in each place but just enough to appreciate the sea (that you can't swim in) and the beach. My first stop was Magnetic Island which was cool, I staying in this hostel which is literally right on the beach, that did mean that there was sand everywhere though. They had just had a full moon party there 2 nights before so the entire hostel looked hung over but that didn't really matter because I got to spend the day lying on the beach and doing absolutely nothing. Next I was off to Airlie Beach which ... read more

Day 31, 12/10/11 Today marks 1 month in Australia and already it feels like forever. We met outside reception at 9am ready for Fraser Island, we checked all our food was correct and everyone had the same and of we went. We was in the front car which had inward facing seats and weren't the best of the 4 vehicles but we made the most of it. Caught the ferry over to Fraser Island which took no more than 10mins and started our trip. We went for a swim in Lake Wabby which is off of a sand-blow which was lovely and then back to a small field inland where was set up camp. Had dinner - chicken noodles - and the evening was kind of boring as nothing was organized. Day 32, 13/10/11 Up early ... read more

Day 33, 14/10/11 Up early again this morning as sleeping in a tent isn't the most comfortable of sleeps, especially with no pillow. My make shift pillow of a pair of shorts worked quite well. On Fraser you only take a day bag so I was wearing the same clothes for three days straight without washing and we all stank by today. We took a drive through a rainforest and onto Lake McKenzie which was beautiful. Had lunch and then back to the hostel. Once at the hostel I had a fantastic shower, did some washing and then had dinner. I felt refreshed again and we had a better evening than the ones on Fraser.... read more

My bus drove through the night and sped me away from the nightmare that was Mackay. And when I say sped, I meant it! At points the bus was going so fast that everything started to shake.....not fun when you are trying to sleep. I eventually managed to fall into an exhausted sleep, and woke in Agnes Waters and the Town of 1770. What a gem after Mackay!!!! Everyone was friendly and helpful. My hostel was lovely, and I was all booked on to scooteroo tour that was definitely going to happen. Scooteroo is a tour that involves chopper style motorbikes/scooters (not sure which as they looked like motorbike, but were only 49.9 CCs) and you drive them around the area looking for kangeroos, and going to see all the sights. It was nerve-racking at first, ... read more

Second blog for Australia and it's an exciting one! We decided after doing our research on Oz that we wouldn't leave the country until we had done tours to the must see Whitsunday Islands and the magnificent Fraser Island. We actually booked it as a double packadge in Cairns just before we caught the bus to Mission Beach. There was a really good deal - 3 days/2 nights on the Habibi boat on the Whitsundays and 3 days/2 nights on a 4x4 self drive tag along tour to Fraser Island with a night in a hostel either side the tour. All for $555 each. We are really pleased we went for this one as we have not seen a better deal since! The first stop was Airlie Beach which is known as the gateway to the ... read more

Today we had a good day on Fraser Island. Amy & Nathan swam in Lake Mackenzie at around 9am. The water was beautiful! We also did a big drive in the bush on the sand & mud & then drove really fast on the long beach – we even drove through little creeks! There were bumps everywhere. Yesterday (Wednesday) we got on the barge to get to Fraser Island. It was good fun but only lasted for about a five minute trip. When Daddy drove off the barge straight onto the beach, we got stuck after three metres & had to let the tyres down again! We then had a really long drive on the beach & through the forest to get to our camp. We all talked on Dad’s UHF radio to our cousin Jen. ... read more

A more relaxed day today, but we got to see some ripper things. After a nice drive through the scrub we arrived at Lake Mackenzie at around 9am. To say it was a gorgeous view does not do it justice. A beautiful freshwater lake that has a sand bottom. Clear as clear & surprisingly warm. The kids had a swim, as did Phil. I had a paddle up to the gonads but was not brave enough to venture any further! From there we went back out toward the beach & up to The Pinnacles, which are an awesome display of cone like cliff things. Then back down to see the shipwreck Maheno. A great spectacle of which we could figure out very little as there were no signs about it. That is probably the most disappointing ... read more

What a week it has been in football! Actually we’ll scratch that because things didn’t roll my way football-wise this weekend just gone. I am currently sitting in my camp chair on Fraser Island at 7.37pm after a feed of pasta, with the kids in bed & me & the missus not being too far from the sack ourselves. It was a ripper day today but I’ll start off from Saturday when we left Fingal Bay. It ended up being a pretty big drive of 10 & a half hours from Fingal Bay to Brisbane. Mostly uneventful & the kids were very well behaved. Except for the Big Prawn in Ballina & the mass of roadwork going on. Also, it was interesting to note that there are stacks of rest stops along the highways in NSW ... read more
