Goofy Pizza on Tuesday night was brilliant! A big drive to Bec’s place (around 650km) but the old girl travelled really well & we arrived around 5pm. Would have been earlier except for the mad traffic – going toward the city at 4.30pm in the afternoon?!? The best bit about Tuesday night was actually that Bec has been eating all the pies – AKA is pregnant! We are all very excited. Chris had each day off that we were there so that worked well. All in all, our time in Melbourne was pretty relaxed. Suz did a bit of shopping, got a haircut, etc. I had a few beers with the boys, got a haircut, etc. The kids played with the pups a fair bit, gave the Xbox 360 a flogging & generally had a heap ... read more

Well we didn’t end up staying in William Creek because the road was in good nick & we go out there at about 9.30am. Instead we buggered off down to Lake Eyre on the worst 62km of National Park road that graces this country. Luckily the view was fantastic when we eventually arrived. The size of this lake is unbelievable. There is no way you can see from one side to the other. We got some good pics & had lunch among the sticky flies & sea gulls (not an actual sea, you stupid sea gulls...). That night we stayed at a place called Coward Springs. It used to be a stop for the Ghan Railway & had a pub & everything going on. Now the only thing left is a couple of restored buildings, that ... read more

Here I am at 3.25am adding to a bloody blog because I can’t sleep. How old am I again? There is a storm outside that is mostly thunder & lightning with only small spurts of rain. I’m pretty sure that the miner named David that I met yesterday said that it only rains twice or three times a year in Coober Pedy. What are the chances??? Not that I’m particularly upset though. I threw the tarps up as soon as I heard the first drops so things should be a lot better than at Burrum Heads when all of our sleeping gear got soaked! Yesterday we wandered around the town & looked at some of the cool stuff underground. First stop was The Old Timers Mine. It is pretty much in the middle of town & ... read more

Now where was I??? Ahh yes. Numerous typing errors & Alice Springs. We ended up staying at the BIG 4 in Alice Springs for two nights. We spent Sunday travelling through the beginning of the West McDonnell Ranges. First stop was at Simpson’s Gap. It is a break in the range following creek that they used to transport defence force gear north during WWII. From there we potted about a bit as the scenery was awesome. Took some photos & stuff like that. Eventually Suz decided on visiting an old Lutheran mission called Hermannsburg that had some interesting history & beautiful paintings by a famous Aboriginal landscape artist named Albert Namatjira. That took us a fair while so we headed back to camp via yet another servo. The camp had some cool things like a didgeridoo ... read more

A lot has been happening since I last tried to blog. Fishing, broken cars, more fishing & a fair bit of driving. In the interest of common sense I shall attempt a somehwat chronological order to things. The last blog was on a Wednesday 10 odd days ago. Amy Skype'd her class & then I can't remember what else happened. I prsume it was a good day like most of the others to this point! I do remeber the Thursday though. Dutch took Phil & I fishing with a mate of his (Jeremy) to a secret spot somewhere West of Katherine. It was a great little drive through some bush to get there. Poor old Dutch scratched his new 4WD a few hundred times but I'm sure they'll polish out. Now it is time to cue ... read more

I can't remember where I was up to in the last blog so I'll have to wing it. Get it? I'm on an Air Force base with planes. Wing. Get it? Never mind. I'll start with Saturday. After a magnificent Friday night football come from behind victory for the Bombers, I was nursing a victory hang over on Saturday. Dutch's cricket team had a Thirty30 game that arvo & I played. Well if you call one dropped catch, three overs for zero wickets (two easy catches dropped - one from a slip!) & a lot of mid strength beer "playing" then I sure did. We got a win & gave each other plenty of stick so that was good. The Mum's & kids went for a swim at the RAAF base pool & played at a ... read more

We have finally arrived at some sort of civilisation on a grand scale. I am able to sit down at a table to type this, which is a bit of a novelty, with a fan going overhead, the dull sounds of Austar & F-18’s in the background, and a washing machine going gangbusters. On Wednesday we left Lorella Springs & went up toward Roper Bar. It was a good yet dusty drive again with a heap of creek/river crossings, more burnt out & wrecked cars, and finally the stop at Roper Bar. Which was ordinary. So we skipped it & headed to Mataranka. Mataranka Homestead was great. Reasonable beer at reasonable prices, good amenities & a live band! We got there around 4.30pm as the drive up was around 500km & took the best part of ... read more

Wow – what a big week it has been in football. The Bombers beat the Cats (take that Fallon) & then the Tigers (or so I’m told as, we haven’t been in internet range for the most part) & I don’t care about the rest. Tonight we are at Lorella Springs (Station) in the NT. I can not recommend it highly enough if you are on your way from QLD to NT. We were going to skip this place as it is 35km off the highway (if you can call a dirt road with creek crossings a highway), but thought we’d go in for a bit of lunch. We decided to stay the night & in the end we are staying two! This place is awesome. It is over one million acres & has the best ... read more

On Wednesday we have arrived at Lawn Hill National Park. We did a pretty big drive of around 500km, including a 100km or so of dirt & a few river crossings, one of which was pretty good fun with water going everywhere. It wasn’t a bad drive as we got to see some Emus, different types of cow (including one large cow eating the insides od a dead calf – spew!) & some huge eagles. The bad part of this trip was that I waited until the Burke & Wills Roadhouse before I bought beer - $60 for a block of VB. I know VB isn’t the best but considering the other tasteless rubbish they have around here, it is the best of a bad bunch! One of the park rangers was releasing some endangered Gulf ... read more

Georgetown is wicked! The Rodeo was in town & we spent Sunday there from around 9am. We initially looked at skipping Georgetown so we could spend an extra day in this area (Karumba) but I am so glad we didn’t. I had the time of my life, grabbing photos of riders, talking to locals & indulging in 20 VB cans or so. Due to the lack of good beer up here & my reduced budget I have moved over to VB as everything else in the cheap skate price range has no taste. We saw all of the event types & the kids & us had the greatest time. In the arvo the girls took the kids to the local pool & the boys stayed to watch the arvo card which was barrel racing & the ... read more
