A few days of quiet were over and we headed to where postcard scenes are made – Fraser Island. We stopped over for one night in Rainbow Beach in a holiday home that was truly a home away from home. We were lucky in enough to bag ourselves a three bedroom apartment with a good size lounge and magnificent balcony featuring a large dining table and outdoor cooker. We had a fantastic meal on the balcony with background soothing sound of rain. The weather did get better though and so we went to check out the local sandblow which is a huge space of pretty much sand that has blown over the years from the beach to the land. An amazing sight! After a fantastic night sleep we set of on our three day tour of ... read more

After another 6am start we packed up camp and headed out in the cars across the beach to the shipwreck, which having had driven past it approx. 3 times we were finally able to stop at for a photo moment! Our next stop was the one we had been most excited about...the bakery!! One of the only shops on the island we enjoyed some delicious confectionary before the second most exciting stop...Lake Mackenzie! The beautiful white sand and clear blue water was a little dulled by the cloud and rain at first but luckily we persevered and the sun came out and we were able to enjoy the lake in all its glory! Our final stop was Lake Mackenzie's little brother according to Pete and it was equally as beautiful and so our car decided to ... read more

On day 54 we discovered that our guide Pete was more interested in plants than we first imagined, and after driving for approx. 2 hours through even bumpier terrain we discovered that our 6am start had been in vain as we arrived at a lake with a 2m viewing platform for turtles! The turtles were cute but after 30mins we had seen enough and so we set off for yet another hour and a half of bone jerking to arrive at......a tree!!!! The tree was slightly more interesting than normal trees but after 15mins of looking at the tree we were ever so slightly disgruntled and we got back in the cars once again with Elin behind the wheel to arrive at a very wet and not so interesting lake for lunch!! Not impressed by an ... read more

We assembled early in the morning to watch a thrilling DVD about driving in sand (Fraser Island is made entirely out of sand!) and met our guide Peter who then introduced us to our cars! The 4wd was loaded and we set off to the ferry where after some hairy reversing we caught the boat to Fraser! After an hour off-road drive through Jurassic Park like scenery we stopped at a rainforest which we walked through before heading on to Lake Wabby. The journey was once again bumpy and the car was almost horizontal at several points but we all made it and arrived at the start of a 40min hike to the top of the most amazing sand dunes which led down to Lake Wabby. The views were spectacular and after a refreshing dip in ... read more

We arrived in tiny Rainbow beach (the gateway to Fraser Island) from Noosa, checked into our hostel (which was really nice) and got ready to go through our briefing for our 3 day 2 night self drive trip to Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and you get around in huge 4x4 trucks in groups of 8 people (which everyone takes turns in driving), following a guide in the lead truck, checking out different spots on the island, then camping and cooking at night. We had our briefing which went through all the health and safety aspects of driving on sand, what to do and what not to do then we were put into our groups. With us was a really nicve couple from Essex (Laura & Gavin), 2 really ... read more

We arrived in Hervey Bay on Wednesday to start our Fraser Island trip on Thursday. Before we headed over to the island we met up with the rest of the group we would be there with for a briefing and to organise our food for the trip. On thursday we were up early to be ready for the 8:30am barge over to the island. In total there was 13 of us going on the tour including our guide so we loaded up our vehicles and headed over to the island. The tour was a self drive trip so there was two 4x4 trucks and the guide up front leading the way. Andy took the opportunity to do the first bit of driving as he was the only guy in our vehicle that was able to drive. ... read more

Whew, where to start! Pick up & ferry over were uneventful but we did see a stingray from the ferry as we pulled in & we were met on the Island by Ranger Pete & all jumped into the 4WD coach(!). More people (22) than KI which I wasn’t sure about but it wasn’t too bad with that many. The Ferry had taken us to Kingfisher Bay Resort (where we were also staying that night) but we soon left the tarmaced roads of the resort for the sandy tracks of the island. Our first stop ws Basin Lake - Fraser Island has many of these freshwater lakes that source their water from rainfall - here some of the group went swimming, some walked around the small lake & we paddled then chatted & Pete showed me ... read more

We began our journey from Rainbow Beach to Fraser Island bright and early, and what a journey it was. Smoothly, we began to roam across the sand beast, only for trouble to start. The car behind us broke down completely, causing an unexpected pit stop in the middle of the bush. Refusing to start, the passengers had to sit and wait it out for a mechanic whilst the rest of us were shown to our first lake of the island. Down a little pathway we go and, wow, I’m stopped in my tracks. This is the most stunning lake I have ever seen. McKenzie you are beautiful. Crystal clear, bright blue water at the front faded to a dark night, sky blue in the distance. After a couple of hours in the sun, we were a) ... read more

Fraser Island is a sand island just off the east coast from Hervey Bay. We stayed in Hervey bay just for a night before departing on a trip to fraser, just as well as there was NOTHING to do there. It was a town full of old people and hotels. As there are no roads on fraser you can only go in a 4 wheel drive vehicle- we opted for the 4 wheel drive bus option as we did not want to get lost in the bush. Just the bus rides were really cool as it was really bumpy. We were lucky with the weather and our first stop was a trip to a fresh water lake with a beautiful white sandy beach . The water was amazing- it was really clean, still and cool. After ... read more
