Oceania » Fiji December 17th 2010

Our flight from NZ to Fiji was in the day which made a refreshing change of not having to hang around for a night flight. There was not any time difference coming from NZ to Fiji so we are still 13 hours ahead of the UK. Arriving in Fiji we headed to the travel agent and booked a weeks stay on an island and our last week back on the mainland. We stayed in Nadi that night and wondered into the main town, as it was sunday not much was open and there was nothing special to see. The next day we were ready to go on a small boat to the island Malolo at Walu beach resort. However in the morning we were due to be picked up at 9 and catch the boat at ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island December 4th 2010

We left Wellington on the early morning ferry which took about 3.5hrs over to Picton on the South Island. Shortly after arriving we were picked up by our next bus with an interesting driver that played rock music really loud all day, which wasn't annoying at all!! Our first stop on the South Island was at Abel Tasman National Park where we stayed in a big tent at a really nice camp site which we really enjoyed although it was a bit chilly at night. The next day we walked along the coastal trail and visited some nice quiet beaches. It was really quiet there with not many people around. That night one of the guys from our bus played in the open mic night at the local cafe so we went along and enjoyed some ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island November 28th 2010

After arriving in Auckland we had a few days to explore the city before catching the stray bus. The city itself has the largest population in New Zealand however the city centre seemed very small with one main street. So after a couple of days we were ready to leave. We had booked onto the stray bus which is taking us all the way through to christchurch. So on thursday we hopped on the bus to our first stop Hahei. Our accomodation for the night was a small orange caravan which was cosy. From Hahei we walked to Cathederal Cove to enjoy the beach and scenary. That night at low tide the bus driver took us to hot water beach, which lies on a fault line. So at low tide you can dig a hole in ... read more

After leaving Hervey Bay our next stop was Brisbane. Here we spent a few days enjoying just being in a city, as it’s our first city for a while. So for the majorirty of our time there we enjoyed walking through the many parks and the busy street doing some shopping. On the first day we headed over the river to the Southbank, where there is a lagoon and park area for BBQ’s which is a very cool feature to have in a city. The lagoon is designed so that there is a beach in the city, whilst sat by the lagoon you can see the sky scrapers along the horizon. What we saw of the city, we found it to be clean and modern with a mix of old and new. The main shopping street ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island October 31st 2010

We arrived in Hervey Bay on Wednesday to start our Fraser Island trip on Thursday. Before we headed over to the island we met up with the rest of the group we would be there with for a briefing and to organise our food for the trip. On thursday we were up early to be ready for the 8:30am barge over to the island. In total there was 13 of us going on the tour including our guide so we loaded up our vehicles and headed over to the island. The tour was a self drive trip so there was two 4x4 trucks and the guide up front leading the way. Andy took the opportunity to do the first bit of driving as he was the only guy in our vehicle that was able to drive. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays October 26th 2010

We arrived in Australia after a long bumpy flight from Singapore to a dull overcast day. We flew into Brisbane and then transferred to another flight up to Townsville to start our journey south. We had originally had decided to start from Townsville to allow us to go on a snorkeling trip to The Great Barrier Reef but after seeing the weather and prices we decided to have a change of plan and headed down to Airlie Beach to do a sailing trip around the Whitsundays islands instead. Luckily by the time we had arrive in Airlie Beach the weather had improved and we were looking forward to our trip. The trip was for 2 days and 2 nights aboard a yacht called SV Whitehaven so on Sunday morning we joined the other guests aboard the ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Little India October 26th 2010

Moving on from KL we spent a few days chilling out in Melaka before we were to move on to Singapore. Melaka was the nicest place we had been to in Malaysia. Melaka historically was an important trading port and consequently over time had been occupied by many countries such as Britain and Holland. So this town had many cultural influences and a vairety of colonial buildings which gave it character. We stayed in an old Chinese medicine shop which had been converted into a hostel, which had a pleasant rustic feel to it. On the friday and saturday we were able to experience the market down Jonker street. Here we tried a speciality called Cendol, which is a combination of shaved ice, syrup, pasta and kidney beans... The ice and syrup was nice and sweet, ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah October 13th 2010

Two weeks ago we boarded our first flight since arriving in Bangkok over 2 months ago and flew to Kota Kinabalu, which is the capital city of the Sabah region of Malaysian Borneo. Here we spent our first few days exploring the city before heading to Kinabalu National park. We arrived the day before Laura's birthday so spent a n enjoyable day wondering around the park trails trying to spot the rain forest wildlife. Although it turned out there wasn't much to see during the day as most of the creatures are nocturnal but we did manage to see a snake...as well as a rat and a giant squirrel. We had been hoping to do the walk to the top of Mount. Kinabalu but unfortunately it was pretty expensive and we realised we didn't have the ... read more

After a long journey from Koh Tao on the night ferry and a mini van the next day to cross the border we were into the next part of our trip, Malaysia. Our first stop was a place called Pulau Penang an island off the west coast. The island was alot bigger than we thought with many high rise buildings. Here we spent a few days wondering chinatown mostly and little india. On one of the days we also took a trip back across to the mainland a place called Butterworth to organise the bus for the next part of the journey. There weren't many sights to see so one afternoon we went to the cinema. Our next stop was Pulau Pangkor another island off the west coast but further south, this island was alot smaller ... read more

We arrived in bangkok after a long journey from Siem Reap and decided to stay the night before heading down to the islands in the South. That night we had a chance to have another cheap Pad Thai and had a wonder around, which after seeing so many different places seemed a bit nicer than we had remembered. The next day we had to hang around waiting for the night bus to take us down to Suratthani. From there we caught the ferry across to the first island which was Koh Samui. Here we stayed in a bungalow hut on the beach which wasn't quite as nice as it sounds but was a cool place to chill out after the journey. We were hoping to do a cooking course here but they turned out to be ... read more
