Our final road trip in Australia, Brisbane to Fraser Island, is over and 2010 is already speeding by as quickly as 2009! After driving through the rain for six hours on the way up to Hervey Bay the prospect of camping for two nights on the 75mile long sand island was not very appealing; especially when the weather forecast for the next three days predicted lightning storms. Being British we thought what the heck and went anyway which was a good decision as the forecast was completely wrong. Armed with plenty of BBQ food, beer and goon (4 litre bag of wine), our group of six, including Beccy’s sister Emily and partner Marc, set off for our stay on the island. Fraser Island, 5km of the East Coast, is unique as despite being in effect a ... read more

I have just got back from 3 days out on Fraser Island and I'm pretty exhausted! I look quite special right now as well because I haven't showered in 4 days, my hair is styling itself and I am covered in sand. Its all good though! We packed up the 4x4 on Thursday morning and took the barge out to the island. We did get stuck straight away (before we had even left the mainland) because the sand was so deep. It hasn't rained in months out here so the sand is really fine and difficult to drive on. We did however start making progress and we made our way pass Dilli Village, Eurong and down to Lake Mackenzie. This is a beautiful inland fresh water lake and the water is clear and really warm. It ... read more

Hello everyone We've made it to Fraser Island. We've been on a 4 WD tour of the island today it was very bumpy but we saw some beautiful things. We've swam in the lakes and creeks and seen a big old shipwreck on the sands. The room has evidence of crawlies but we haven't seen anything too scary (yet)! Emma the driving is fine the roads are so so long though. Hope you're all ok, we're fine and having fun. xx ... read more

Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls, welcome to this week's double bill blog brought to you by your favourite campers. Since last time, it’s been a rollercoaster ride of ups and ups as we have had a fantastic past couple of weeks. Thanks for all your messages and emails, it’s great to hear from you when we are out here. Also a quick hello to our newest blog subscriber, Natalie King!! So when I last wrote the blog we were looking into our Fraser Island trip. There are two places from which you can take a ferry across to Fraser Island, one being Hervey Bay and the other being Rainbow Beach. We could not find a good 4x4 hire deal in Hervey Bay so we thought we would head down to Rainbow Beach, and with a ... read more

If I say propeller aircraft does that fill you with horror? If the answer is no then it’s the same for me ! How good is that ? For those that know me well that is a huge move forward . My second flight from cairns to where I am now was on a smallish propeller plane from Brisbane that took us down the coast over an amazing coastline. And what is more fantastic , I was able to look and take pickies admittedly the bleedin camera has this blur in the middle which I will try and have sorted ( does anyone have an idea what it might be ? is it terminal?!). But you will get the feeling. Arriving on the island by catamaran after a long day and a very early start was ... read more

My day in Hervey Bay was pretty uneventful, as there is nothing to do there at all. The next morning was time to go off to Fraser Island (the largest sand island in the world) on a self-drive tour. However, in the morning it was all rush rush so whilst the briefing for the drivers took place, four people out of a group of nine had to go and do food and alcohol shopping. Missing the briefing meant that you weren't allowed to be a driver- it seems the tour company has decided that instead of starting half an hour earlier, it is better to deny almost half the group the opportunity to get behind the wheel, a decision that has to be made almost immediately. Since I haven't driven much for the past couple of ... read more

Nac... read more

05/12/2009 - We woke early again today, got ready and checked out of this fantastic hostel in Harvey Bay. We left our luggage at the desk because we would be returning late tomorrow afternoon after spending a couple of days on Fraser Island. We grabbed our overnight packs and sat to have breakfast while we waited for our tour bus to pick us up. Soon enough it arrived and we jumped aboard for our trip to the barge. There were so many different companies, most of which I recognised from when I was booking, we were on an overnight tour with Fraser Island Explorer. It took us around 45 minutes to reach Fraser Island where we met our guide and group for the next couple of days. After intro’s and safety tips we were on our ... read more

Hello On Saturday we had a bit of a relax and took a walk to Queensland Museum where they have awesome Muttaburrasauras bones. On Sunday morning we checked out of our hotel and picked up our hire car at 7:30am and made our way to Hervey Bay. On the way to Hervey Bay we stopped in at Australia Zoo (the late, great Steve Irwin’s Zoo). We got to see a whole array of lovely animals, the Wildlife Warrior Show at the Crocoseum and we also got to pet some more koalas, roos, wombats and some other barn animals (which included some babe like piglets). We also got to feed some massive Asian elephants and there was also an excellent tiger show, where they were swimming about and playing with their trainer. We finally reached our motel ... read more
