Aaaah Koh Tao. Relaxing lazy days on the beach, snorkelling in the sea, a beer or two at sunset followed by a green curry and papaya salad before walking home along the beach in the moonlight. Then do it all again ten times over and you'll still be left wanting more. We stayed in Mae Haad. This is the more functional end of the island where the ferries come in but it's good value, quiet at night, and well located for days on Aow Leuk or Sai Ree beach and evenings out in Sai Ree village. There's also a couple of nice little bars on the beach nearby. We'd start the day with a breakfast in 'Cappucino' a french run bakery and cafe with good food, music, coffee, and wireless. Then take a walk to either ... read more

None too shabby Krabi

Krabi is not a beach destination itself but a good place to base yourself and visit the beaches at Ao Nang and Rai Leh. We stayed at A Mansion hotel (on Th Chao Fa) which was really good value and close to the river, the shops, the bus stop and long tail boats. The first day the rain absolutely poured down, it is monsoon season after all, so we stayed around town, did some shopping and our washing. There's enough to see around the town to occupy you for a day or so and you get more of a feel for Thai culture than in the resorts. Each evening we ate in one of the two night markets, the one by the river or the other more central in town open on weekends. You can get ... read more

There's no denying the aesthetic appeal of Koh Phi Phi. The soaring cliff tops and white sand beaches, hidden coves and blue green water. There's two islands, Koh Phi Phi Don where you can stay, and Koh Phi Phi Leh a conservation area and home to Maya Bay (of 'The Beach') that you can visit by longtail boat. Phi Phi Don has a small tourist town with accommodation to suit all budgets but there are quieter and more romantic locations dotted around the island the best of which we think are at 'Long Beach'. Koh Phi Phi Don town is frequently described as 'a bit scruffy' but really this is only by those who have their expectations firmly set at Koh Phi Phi the paradise. It's functional, crowded, busy, a bit of a hotch potch of ... read more

One KL of a time

After 5 days in Singapore we jumped on the 'Super Nice Bus' overland to Kuala Lumpur. Dropped off in the centre it was then a short journey on the monorail to our hotel 'The Grand Central' in Chow Kit. The hotel proved neither 'grand' nor 'central' but was adequate and close to both the monorail and the LRT, two excellent ways of getting about KL. The traffic in KL is something else. Mopeds buzzing everywhere and if the road is choca bloc (it always is) then they take to the pavements and speed down there instead. The traffic lights make no accommodation for the pedestrian and neither does any of the traffic! But hey, just hang onto the coat tails of a local and you'll get across the road somehow. Settled into the hotel we went ... read more

Singapore We Love You!

Singapore, we love you. You have it all, an efficient metro system, very impressive old and modern architecture, a friendly population and mall after mall full of shiny spanking new shops. What more could a city dwelling boy or girl ask for? There's even a cocktail invented by you, the gin based Singapore Sling. This city could certainly teach others a thing or two. There's nothing really to fault Singapore on, apart from perhaps, the weather, it's a wee bit humid and perhaps the amount of time the traffic lights take to change in order to cross the road (are we starting to sound petty?) And...er, yes perhaps the fact that we both got bitten by mosquitos after looking around Fort Canning park during the day. Is there not something you could spray the pesky bugs ... read more

We loved Magnetic island. Peaceful, laidback and slightly off the backpacker run from Sydney to Cairns. From Townsville it's an easy 30 minute crossing on the Sun Ferries catamaran and then, if you stay in the Arcadia Beach Guest House, there's a good chance that Pete will pick you up in the Roller! This turned us into Flashpackers apparently. We got a little tour round in it as well and ooh didn't people stare. Louise gave them a little wave. We spent three nights on the island. Alma bay, a short stroll, is picturesque and tranquil and great for a swim or a snorkel. There are a couple of great walks on the island, 'The Forts Walk' takes you up to the old WW2 installation (a hundred or so Aussie men and women were stationed here ... read more

After Rainbow beach we spent a few days in Agnes Water, last chance for some surfing before the coastline tucks in behind the Great Barrier Reef and the surf dies away. Agnes and the Town of 1770 are quiet but very likeable. Onto Airlie Beach and the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands! Possibly the most beautiful beach on the planet. Consistently voted in the top ten and according to the most recent polls number one, Whitehaven beach is something special. It's the highlight of the Whitsundays sailing trip. Mooring off the beach we came ashore on the tender and spent a lovely lazy few hours taking it all in. There's 8 kilometres of the whitest and softest white sand so plenty of room for everyone to have their own little piece. We took a lovely long ... read more

From Noosa we caught the Greyhound to Rainbow Beach. We'd heard from other backpackers it was a more relaxed place from which to do Fraser Island and also potentially cheaper than from Hervey Bay. Rainbow is small but cute, we stayed in Pippie's Hostal one of the three options in the town and were able to organise our Fraser trip with them as well. We joined our briefing the day after we arrived and were well versed in the dangers of Fraser Island. Dingoes; be careful not to go anywhere on your own as they will try their luck. Driving; there have been plenty of accidents on the island particularly on self guided trips, only recently a thing of the past because of all the accidents. Sharks; Tiger and Bull sharks along the east coast mean ... read more

After dragging ourselves away from Sydney we caught a short flight up the coast to Ballina and Byron Bay. With Byron's relaxed surfy style, a bit of art here and there, and some live music most nights we got to like it very much. We stayed 5 days and with better weather we may have looked to get a longer let. The point break (get me) at the far end of Byron's main beach is a cracker. So Louise got busy on the boogie board and I managed to catch a few decent waves without getting in the way of too many locals, 'Look left!' one shouted at me as I accidently dropped in on her wave. What we loved most about the Byron Surf was that people from all walks were enjoying the surf. And ... read more

On the plane from Christchurch we sighted land, Australia! Were we really going to be in Sydney, home of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and more importantly tv's 'Bondi Surf Rescue'? All of a sudden it all seemed absurdly fantastic. How on earth did we manage to get here? And would I be able to get that song by the Manic Street Preachers out of my head? We chose to stay in Glebe liking the sound of it's boho style. This allowed us to get to know another area of Sydney but still be close enough to walk to Sydney Harbour to see the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Arriving late in Glebe we had time for a quick bite to eat, a beer and then an early night in anticipation of the day ahead ... read more
