Cairns/ Lake Placid - Smithfield - Mossman - Daintree National Park (Noah Beach) Day 186 Monday, August 27, 2007 With the grandparents presumably safely ensconced in their own comfortable bed in Brentwood, Perth we were back to our 'normal' lifestyle. So up and at ‘em early(ish) to pack up and repack the trailer after offloading some ‘stuff’ we have been lugging around for a while. Brayden also had a dentist appointment booked for a 9:30 so our routine with the grandparents over the last week (ie: a slow and lazy start to the day) was banished to recent history and we were out the gate by 8:30 ish. After a major shop up and replenishing of various essentials we headed north along the Captain Cook Hwy - supposedly one of the most scenic routes in Australia…although ... read more

Great Barrief Reef Meets Rainforest Wow where to start?! So much has happened since I last wrote an entry even though it has only been just over 1 week. I arrived in Sydney on Friday Sept 21st around noon and my awesome Aussie mate Fernanda was there to come collect me. We met in 2006 on our Eastern Europe Contiki Trip. I spent 5 nights staying with her and her lovely Spanish family. Fed's brother Danny was also on the Contiki trip so we had a blast all hanging out together. To top it off, I was able to 'reunite' with a bunch of other friends from that tour - G, Johnny, and Ivan. So the 6 of us had a great time catching up as you can imagine. I also was able to see and ... read more

Cape Tribulation ! At a Mad Monday party I got to know of people heading to Cape Tribulation the next morning and so I went early morning towards the end of the sealed road to the north. After Cape Tribulation it is only a dusty windy gravel road that continues north through the rainforest. The people I came with thought it was a boring place and returned the same day to Cairns, but I was not bored at all seeing the beach with the fine sand as powder and staying at a hostel surrounded by rainforest. I stayed 8 nights in this distant place which is not connected to any main power lines and where you need to have a flashlight with you once the sun goes down to be able to find you way once ... read more

We departed Cairns by 7:30 am heading north on the scenic coastal road. The Captain Cook Highway snakes along the shoreline past secluded beaches and rainforest-clad mountains with views out over the Coral Sea to the Great Barrier Reef. Our first stop of the day was Mossman Gorge. The clear mountain river cuts through thick rainforest and tumbles over boulders on its journey to the sea. Our second stop was at the Daintree Wildlife Sanctuary where we had a coffee and cookies. I had the chance to cuddle a really cute kangoroo named Jake. After that we crossed the Daintree River on the Cable Ferry. We stopped at the Alexandra Range Lookout, which gives you a bird's eye view of the Daintree River, Port Douglas and, on a clear day, landmarks south of Cairns. After the ... read more

I booked a 2 day tour to Cape Tribulation because it worked out much cheaper than going by bus and booking activities myself. I felt like a bit of a stereotype tourist, as we tended to stop at each place we went to for only half an hour to take pictures and then drive off. The driver/guide made it interesting by coming out with interesting facts for almost the entire journey and putting on Bob Marley songs the rest of the time. We packed a lot in to one morning, visiting Mossman gorge, a small zoo, and going for a walk around a rainforest, before getting to our accommodation around 2pm. I went for a walk along a couple of beaches (crossing a creek which i'll mention later) with Tom, an English guy from the tour, ... read more

Ehkapa oltiinkin :P Matka alkoi siis hilpeissa tunnelmissa vaikkakin hymy hyytyi melko pian k... read more

Cape tribulation, 2 and a half hours driving abovve Carins and beyond the surfaced roads, is isolated! The only place where tropical rain forests meet the sea. Our cabins are in the forest and the bar is on the beach (see photo) we spent time on beaches, cruising among the mangroves and crocs and had a two hour guided walk int he forest at night- complete with huntsman spiders!! We met a wild cassowary the next day!!... read more

Well here we go on an adventure... finally... we have been stuck in Cairns for way to long and starting to go stir crazy. Along with Sophie, a fellow Shenannigans cleaner, and Sean and Fiona, a great couple we have had some good times with. On the road at about 4PM, crazy windy roads on the way up but Sean is a kick ass driver so it was so much fun. Beautiful scenery all the way up but we had to weary of cassowaries (massive birds - bigger than humans) crossing the road. Checked into PKs, a hostel in Cape Trib, very tiny little village with a few shops and restaurants and thats it! We were going to do the night walk but missed the opportunity so went for a nice dinner at Dragonfly Cafe. The ... read more
