So, the Canadian gals and I rent a car and head off for the day's adventures. (The gals show up late, since they are hung over from the BBQ the night before at their new boss's house...they just started new jobs here in Port Dougie :) Doesn't bother me, since I just finished my run on the beach and I now have time to make us a gourmet lunch box for the trip.) So, by the not-so-early hour of 10 am, we are on the road; we plug in the iPod and head north planning to go as far as we can until the road ends. We hit the beginning of the Daintree rainforest and stop for a pontoon crocodile tour. This is right up my alley!! It is a slow, easy 1-1/2 hour cruise in ... read more

We travelled up from Cairns for a night and two days to see Cape Tribulation. It is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area While there we went on a riverboat tour where our guide pointed out to us and expanded our knowledge on the various different kinds of wildlife that inhabit the area. Most notably we saw two crocodiles; a baby one and a large one that commandeers that particular part of the lake. He's called Scarface for obvious reasons and was probably at least 7 ft long! Pretty amazing. We stayed in a cute hostel for the night and the next day took a walk through the rainforest where we saw snakes and spiders and a beautiful variation of terrain. The snap happy A Level photographer in me got a bit excited and ... read more

Cairns definitely felt more like Australia, we could feel the humidity as soon as we stepped off the plane and although it seemed a little overcast it was very warm which made us cheerful. We called our hostel who organised to come and pick us up. The hostel was named Calypso and was really great fun with a large pool and great buffet that was cheap for guests every night. One of Shane's friends worked there too so we got to know the rest of the staff pretty quickly. Cairns suprised me, the town centre being very small and clean and I liked it a lot. Swimming was impossible here however, due- not to sharks- but this time to bloody crocs!!! The front shoreline boasting a great promenade for morning walks and strolls stretched out over ... read more

16th - 17th April - Cape Tribulation During our stay in Cairns we had organised a 2 day trip up North towards Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest 'Where the rainforest meets the reef'. Here is the only place in the world where two world heritage sights meet so we were expecting something special! On Wednesday 16th April our pickup was at 7Am so it was an early rise. Our bus driver was called Kiwi Matty and he chose to ask us 3 quick questions to introduce ourselves to all others on the bus... 1. Name? 2. How long are you staying in Cairns? 3. Do you scruntch or fold your toilet paper? The last question brought some interesting answers! The first stop was Mossman Gorge where we had a quick walk through the vegetation to ... read more

No, you are not going crazy. I pre-dated this entry since this travelling adventure took place last week and I want to keep track of when these adventures actually happen, not when I finally get around to writing about them. We left Saturday morning (Feb. 23) and returned home Sunday night. Cape Tribulation is about 2 hours north of Cairns, and is known as "where the rainforest meets the ocean". We decided to rent a van for the weekend for travelling freedom. Since 7 people went (me, Christina, Annie, Philip and Yngrid, Brad, and Nick) it came out to be much cheaper than if we were to take a bus or something. However, my mental well-being was not included in this fare. Christina (from New York) drove the van going up. Keep in mind that Australia ... read more

Hi everyone! Here's the latest installment of photos! We are now in Sydney, so without further ado are the photos from Queensland. We had a great time up there, the weather was a bit of a mixed bag, but it was hot and sunny when we most needed it! Cairns We stayed in a nice hostel just out of the city, with a nice pool which was great considering the heat and humidity. Cairns itself is quite small, but we had a nice time relaxing in the laid back atmosphere. Visits included Kuranda, on the Skyrail through the rainforest and then back on the Scenic Railway. We also swam a bit in the lagoon, which is a massive man made outdoor pool on the waterfront, as Cairns has no beach. We then rented a car and ... read more

So - off we went in our little campervan, wondering why people were staring at us on the roads and then remembering that we were in an acid green campervan - got to laugh! Spent a couple of days in Cairns before heading up to Port Douglas and then Cape Tribulation which has beautiful rainforests. Finally Justin has seen a pretty huge spide so he's happy. Thankfully it wasnt in Kermit the Camper but in the rain forest. The drive up North was really pretty - the rain forest goes right down and meets the beach. So, all in all we're enjoying the freedom of the open road - ask us again in 6 weeks time... x... read more

Cape Tribulation was a dream come true. I worked at the Australian Tropical Research Station running the bathouse which was also an environmental education Centre, caring for the bats, assisting in research and doing general maintenance i.e. building electric fences, weed control and maintaining solar power etc to earn my keep. I lived in a little cabin in the middle of the rainforest with all the weird and wonderful animals crashing about and making noises in the night! The bats were very friendly and all had names sometimes me and Cassandra a German Girl would come back from the beach and they would climb on us give us a good sniff and lick all the salt off of our faces. The beach was 5 mins walk down the driveway and seemed very tropical with palm trees ... read more

From Cairns we took a tour up to Cape Tribulation where we did a couple of walks around the rainforest, Mossman Gorge and took a boat ride along the river. We stayed in a hostel in the rainforest for 2 nights which was a great experience. The next day we went out on a boat onto the Great Barrier Reef where I did a couple of dives - saw loads of fish, coral, and a black-tipped shark. After Cape Trib, we headed back down the coast to Cairns for one more night, and then onwards to Townsville and to Magnetic Island - took a kayak out on the sea, and enjoyed the day relaxing on the beach (couldn't swim in the sea because of the jellyfish) and by the pool. From Magnetic Isalnd we continues down ... read more
