Day 253 (05.12.07) Since we were now making the trip to Cape Trib in the van we could choose what time we left and spent the morning shopping for a couple of essentials to make sure we could sleep and eat whilst on the road. Not far out for Cairns we took our first detour (as we do) to Yorkies Knob - this gave us the chance to really test out the van up a really steep hill to a look out (NORA did herself proud you'll be glad to know) where we got out our camping chairs and had a very civilised picnic. A quick trip to Yorkies Knob beach later and we were back on the road north. Continuing up the coast we started along the Captain Cook Highway, a stunning winding road hugging ... read more

We left the desert behind and flew from Alice to Cairns in the north of Queensland. After a sleepless night in a hostel being subjected to 'pounding pounding techno music' (yep we're getting old) we went to pick up our state of the art 'wicked' camper van that would be home for our journey down the east coast to Melbourne. The van's are all decorated by the owners' wife, a dab hand at graffiti. We were quite happy with ours as moments earlier Steve Irwins "Crikey" van, and one with a slogan about mobile phone users being gay, left the compound. The first van limped round the block before we returned it and got one that didn't stall every time you stopped. So eventually heading north in "Heaven and Hell", we set off for Cape Tribulation, ... read more

Fri. 16th Nov: Our 1st stop was Port Douglas, just over an hours drive. Its a really pleasant town, much like Noosa but in a nicer area and I imagine more quiet. We had a wander around which was slow progress in the humidity. It was of course necessary to stop for a skinny milk, hydration so important in that sort of heat! The heat had obviously got to Laz as then went in search of a book store and even purchased a book, the 1st ever book he's bought for the pleasure of just reading, bless! After getting over the shock of the book buying, we drove onto Mossman Gorge, in the southern part of Daintree National Park. We decided to strech our legs so swapped thongs for walking shoes and did a 5km route ... read more

11th Nov - We headed on a tour up to Cape Tribulation, stopping on the way for a trip on a Daintree River cruise to spot some crocs, unfortunately only saw 2 babies so nothing too big and scary, we then had a small rainforest walk which was nice and cooling out of the sun, then next stop out accommodation which was at trhe Ferntree Rainforest Lodge, it was lovely with 2 pools, we were staying in dorms and only had one dorm pal Alain from Switzerland who was never in the room so pretty much had the place to ourselves, we were about 10 mins from the beach so we headed out for a walk once settled in. The beach was lovely but seeing signs for 'Crocodiles recently spotted' had me slightly on edge. We ... read more

On Tues morning, we left early for Cape Tribulation. For some reason, I assumed that the word "Tribulation" was a mix between the words "Triumph" and "jubilation" and thought how nice it sounded! Apparently, it's in the vein of "trials and tribulations" however, as Captain Cook didn't like the area when he arrived! (Think he wrecked his boat or something). Anyway... We stopped off firstly at Mossman Gorge, where we got to walk through the forest, learned about nasty plants that will barb-wire you given the chance, and then we got to jump up and down on a swinging bridge (which was rather fun due to other more sensible people on the bridge who weren't looking too happy about us jumping all over the place and making the bridge sway). Some of my friends decided to ... read more

I spent the weekend at Cape Tribulation, just north of Cairns. I went with a tour group and yesterday we went for a walk through the rainforest and took a boat across Daintree River. On Daintree River we saw lots of bats and a baby crocodile. Then we spent some time on the beach at Cape Tribulation. The beach is gorgeous but we were advised not to go swimming in the sea because crocodiles live in there! Today we went to Mossman Gorge and I saw a Boyd's Forest Dragon. On the way back to Cairns, we stopped at an ice-cream factory where they grow all of the fruit for the ice-cream in their orchard. We also popped into the town of Port Douglas for a quick wander but we didn't stay long. ... read more

Cousin Brown set out to OZ from England when he turned 20. He traveled around the country with friends and lived his life carefreely for two awesome years. As he flashed pictures of his past time in OZ, I saw smiles on his face, whitesand beaches, tropic forest, backpacker paradise and countless adventures. He told me I got see the jungle, beach and swim in the ocean in Cape Tribulation. To see it for myself, I came to Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation is a secluded beach nested in Daintree Rainforest on the tip of Northern coast. It is north of Cairns and three hours away. A tour bus with wild images of young adults flying off rocks into waterholes or swinging on vines like a jungle scene in the movie “George of Jungle” painted across its ... read more

Maar back to business. De ... read more

After an overnight stay in Cairns I was off for a 3 day tour of Cape Tribulation. This area is located about 100km north of Cairns right on the coast. Cape Trib is basically a giant rainforest with lots of trails and plenty of wildlife. We took a croc spotting tour on the way up where we managed to spot a 7.5' croc in the Daintree River. The wet season up there is massive. Over a 48 hour period 5 years ago, they recieved 1.9 meters of rain which flooded the whole area. The time is in transition right now, so they have the heat but not the moisture of the wet season. With a few hours to kill on day 1, I went to an exotic fruit tasting session. The farmer grows over 100 fruits, ... read more

Of I go for 3 days to spend some time chilling out and admiring the most piecefull place ever, their are no phone cabels here which is nice and also the electricaty is ran from generaters. We set off on a coach with a crazy driver Viv, who left her folder on the roof of the bus before we had even left Cairns, so we had a pit stop at a cafe so she could get all the important stuff sent over by fax ops. Along the way we saw wild walabys that now live very close to the road side because thier have been so many new houses built they have been forced to live close to Captin Cook highway. 1st stop Daintree River cruise we all hopped on a boat with a tour guide ... read more
