Another update, I'm starting to get good at this. But have been a busy bee, ish. So yes, During this week i headed away from cairns for 3 days upto cape tribulation on my own, which was a bit weird. Had to book a tour up, but did just want to jump on a bus and go as people had said it's a much nicer place than cairns, which is actually really dead with very little going on, well it comes to life a bit more at about midnight but there really aren't that many bars, apparently cairns has a population of 80,000, but u will find more than 250,000 people here at one time, where are they all? anyhow i headed north, went for a walk around the mossman gorge, was good, but not ... read more

Hello, back again in Cairns, on my way to Daintree National Park. After a nice and relaxing Saturday with my friends, visiting the local fruit market in Cairns, trying to stay dry as the rains of the tropical wet season were pouring down on us, enjoying some time with the kids, playing ping pong, reading bocks, playing Mau Mau ( a German card game) and wathing them at night, as there parents went to a charity ball, i headed off this morning on a 2 day tour north to Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation. On our way to the NP, our little tour bus stopped at a local Tropical Animal Sanctuary, and we had the chance to feed Kangaroo, see some crocodile, observe the Cassowary and other tropical birds, and basically get a taste for ... read more

After a cruise along the Daintree River, during which we saw a baby crocodile and loads of snakes we arrived at Cape Tribulation Beach House where nowhere was safe. We were at a remarkable meeting of two World Heritage sites, the oldest rainforest in the world and the Great Barrier Reef but this did not change the fact that everything there could potentially kill us. Our lodgings happened to encroach on the territory of "the World's Most Dangerous Bird" (Guiness Book of Records 2006) the Cassowary (they like to disembowel you with their claws), and we bumped into it almost immediately. Despite being highly endangered and protected, these are evil, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Going to the loo became too perilous to attempt alone (or altogether in Rosie's case!). When we told our German ... read more

We were on the bus at 8am to take us to Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation is a large area of rainforest in the Daintree National Park, famous for it's mangrove forests which run right down to the beaches in the area. Our talkative bus driver entertained us (Some of the time) as we drove by endless sugar cane fields before taking a "Crocodile Tour" on the Daintree River. While we did manage to see one very small crocodile it wasn't quite up to Steve Irwin standards. After the boat trip we did a very rushed boardwalk walk through a small area of rainforest. Rushed because it's called rainforest for a reason (It got 6.5 meters of the stuff in 2006 which is a lot by anyones standards). After a quick drenching we reached PKs Jungle ... read more

Wednesday- So i decided to see some of the Great Barrier reef from a lot drier climate...that took the form of a bottomless boat and yellow submarine. I went to "green island" to do this. They don't call it GREEN island for nothing u know! the weather was really windy, it was the choppiest boat ride i've ever been on and i was surrounded by puking japanese people! YUCK! Unfortunately, as the weather was so rubbish, the sea was all murky- therefore reducing visibility of fish and coral. To be honest, i've seen better views of the reef on tv and postcards but hey, at leasst I was there! It was a pretty little island, weird to have rainforest right next to beach though! but hey, thats queensland!!!! All in all, i think im DONE with ... read more

This is where Captain Cooks' troubles all began after he crashed into the great barrier reef, 100km south of Cook town where he eventually landed after throwing his load overboard and patching the hole with sails and sailors! A couple of hours on a guided tour with Shane around the Daintree river and national park was pretty stunning, although it was raining which is to be expected in a rainforest during wet season. While most stood in the rain the guide and I went swimming up the river which was pretty brisk but well worth it. Then we drove to a fruit orchard where the owner cares for orphaned Joeys which were truely adorable and picked up some really fresh plums on our way to the resort. The Beach house resort was as expected and boasted ... read more

To our amazement we woke up to brilliant sunshine this morning... what a relief and such a contrast to the previous day's black clouds and rain. We had to check out at 9am so got up early and headed to the only swimming hole where there weren't crocs. It was a bit of a dispointment with the water looking quite shallow and mosquitos everywhere! So we went on a board walk through the rainforest. On the way we rain into the Canadian girls who were shooting a nature documentary. Was very funny! There was just about enough time to go for a quick dip in the pool at our hostel before jumping back on the bus to take us back to Cairns. On the way we stopped at an ice cream farm and the ice cream ... read more

We had to get up nice and early because the coach was picking us up form our hostel at 7.15am. There were 2 other English girls from our hostel who were going on the same trip but they were staying for 2 nights in different accommodation. The bus then stopped at another hostel to pick up 4 other girls who were on exactly the same trip as us. 3 of them were from Canada (Carla, Heather and Marcey) and another English girl (Lindsey) who went to Birmingham uni and graduated at the same time as Mel and me! Mel slept most of the way (feeling slightly hung over from the night before!) but didn't miss out on much because there wasn't really anything to see because of the thick low cloud and almost constant rain!! We had a 2 day trip up to Cape Tribulation, called so as this is where Captain Cook's vessell, the Endeavour ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef. It was a lovely place, with stunning views. Although it was soooooo humid and hot we found it hard to leave our airconditioned dorm. Literally everyone was just lying about all day because there was no air. We did manage to go Jungle Surfing though. The Raintree rainforest is in this part of Queensland, so we took the opportunity to be monkeys and swing through the rainforest. Great fun. Pics below. We also went on a river criuse up the river and saw a croc on the bank. On our way home we went through Port Douglas, which is a lovely little town. ... read more

Went on the first trip that I had booked yesterday in Cairns, this is a full day trip to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree forest. The bus picked me up at 7:25 and we toured a few more hostels then made our way out to Port Douglas to pick another two people up from there we carried on and stopped for a coffee break, we then continued to the Daintree river where we were given a tea then we took a 45 min cruise on the river where we saw some tree frogs, a small croc then a tree snake we then returned and caught the bus on the other side of the river as it took the ferry over. We then went to Cape Tribulation which is surrounded by forest, we took a board-walk through ... read more
