We tried to cram as much family time as possible into the last 2 weeks of our visit - including a Christmas celebration knowing it will be a couple of years before we can get back. The panorama of Bondi Beach at the beginning of the blog is a first. For those of you not into family pics, give this entry a miss!... read more

This isn't advice I read in a book. I haven't collated meaningless crap from the internet. These are the tips I've acquired over the past 20 years by living, eating and breathing Bondi. Travelling is my number one priority. My constant quest to skip Australian shores means I constantly overlook the fact that I live on perhaps the most famous beach in the world - Bondi. Located on Sydney’s East coast, it's one of Australia's most prized possessions and simply put, my own backyard. Japanese tourists arrive by the bus load, as foreign to the beach as the Aussie Battler is to the Kimono. It's an easy conclusion to come to as a horde of Asian tourists run down the beach dressed in suits, shielding their sizzling skin with umbrellas. Still, give them some credit... they ... read more

An absolutely perfect day!'' We actually managed to sleep past 4:30 a.m. for the first time. Had a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, packed a lunch, then went to fetch our rental car. The rental location was closer than we expected, the Australia GPS card we bought worked in our Garmin, and off we went to the Beach. Mike did a fantastic job of driving from the right side of the car, on the left side of the street and in narrow lanes. We got to Bondi Beach in no time. What a beautiful beach! A long stretch of clean sand, turquoise water and warm sunshine. Our good fortune was continued by the presence of a sculpture exhibit along the coastal walk that had brought out school groups, red hat ladies, local citizens and travelers alike. ... read more

Every year for two weeks the Bondi to Tamaramma coast walk is taken over by weird and wonderful art installations. Instead of me writing uninformed ramblings about this fantastic art event, here are some photos of my favourite entries for you to look at and hopefully enjoy.... read more

Hello all Just when you thought you were havung a rest from me here I am again. It was time to leave my new friends Colleen and Peter so big hugs all round and hope to see them in the UK next year. I had a very good drive from Albany to Perth last Wednesday- an easy 450 km ...and for the first 200 km I probably only saw 10 cars if that... and it is a good road with passing lanes at intervals which is good when you get behind a road trian which is a big truck pulling 2 carriages behind it - they can be alomost 40 m long. A stop at Kojanup to see a very nice exhibition with some aboriginal stories and have a coffee was a good break in the ... read more

2336 hours: Dad's apartment in Bondi In bedroom. Not sleeping. -Bag is packed with anal retentive precision. -Figured out at least one really obvious thing that i forgot to pack (headphones... genius. You even remembered to bring the little double adaptor thing for headphones just in case, which was QUITE optimistic considering you didn't even pack your own pair). Might have to resort to stapling passport to forehead, but will reconsider in the morning. -Assessed the possibility of growing a holiday beard (big no). -Just watched the Darjeerling Limited, and am definitely now ready to roll. I'm somewhere between crapping my pants with excitement and crapping my pants with nervousness about now, so no matter what else happens between now and getting to the airport.... some pants are gonna be crapped. Good thing i'm bringing two ... read more

The sun was shining so we decided to head out to Sydney's famous Bondi Beach. The views did not disappoint, both natural and human (surfers and the famous lifeguards!!) And 3 hours were spent admiring them before Becky and Elin decided to venture into the sea. Unfortunately the waves were a little too exciting for them (Elin was struggling to keep her bikini on) and they drifted across to the surfing section and were told over the tannoy to move! oozing sophistication they moved along and continued to be bashed by the waves! Having enjoyed a whole afternoon of actual sunshine on a a beach (we thought this would never happen!) we returned to King's Cross and to our new hostel Great Aussie Backpackers to prepare for our first night out in Sydney! Having packed only ... read more

My last 2 weeks in Australia have been a real mixture of highs and lows with fabulous scenery, great food and wine and a wide variety of accommodation. I have gone from below zero temperatures with frost, sleet and snow to the hottest first Spring day Sydney has seen since 1865 with a lovely 26 degrees Celsius. The down side has been a nasty chest infection, an expensive medical bill and some enforced time indoors. Anyhow, here is the tale of the final 14 days in the magnificent country of Australia. After an overnight stay at a hostel in the centre of Sydney I caught an early morning train for the scenic 2 hour trip north-west to the Blue Mountains where I was staying in the central town of Katoomba. I felt a bit under the ... read more
