Sydney What a city. It has everything: beautiful beaches, amazing old and new architecture. It’s a lovely city to spend time in. The modern history of Sydney started in 1788 when a fleet of British ships came in to the harbour. From then until 1900 Sydney was the capital of the British Colony of New South Wales. In 1900 it became the state capital. Sydney was original named New Albion but the colony acquired the name Sydney after the British State Security Thomas Townsend Lord Sydney. Today Sydney is Australia’s largest city and has played host to many international events, including the 2000 Summer Olympics. Laurent and I spent a fun filled time in the city. The day we arrived it was late afternoon and we didn’t have time to start a full activity so we ... read more

Good bye England 01,12.17 First stop: South Africa to see my dadddd.. So finally it was time to go back to SA and see dad, he lives in a shared house, pretty messy due to his house mates but I had a bed and that was fine. We spent most of the time outside, or cooking. The game reserve and the river where they fish and catch crabs was the best part of what bushmans river has to offer but of course the highlight of my trip was spending time with my dad and seeing granny. I missed him. I always will. I thought saying goodbye would get easier but of course it didn't. BUT.. leaving and knowing he is proud of me. That's something money can't buy! Sydney: 16.12.17 - 04.04.17 I landed in Sydney ... read more

The British Airways 777 flight from Singapore to Sydney was like a little slice of home far above the Java sea. Can somebody tell me if there is an etiquette regarding the reclining seats during a flight? It seemed like only a few minutes after we took off and before the substantial in-flight food and drinks, that the person in front of me flipped the lever, and either I was to be too cramped or I was to be part of the great domino effect through the cabin. We landed at Sydney airport early in the morning. There was a risk that my Ukulele was to be confiscated as we had been advised twice, once by the flight's purser, that there are rules regarding bringing wood into the country-I’m pleased to say it lives on to ... read more

WE'RE BACK! I know it's only been a couple of weeks, but our adoring fans (our mums ...) need their fix. So we left off the last blog having arrived in Sydney - to be more specific Bondi Beach. Our home for the next week was to be Bondi Backpackers, imaginatively named as it is a backpackers and is in fact based right on Bondi Beach. This place was a recommendation from a nameless, no longer friend of ours - RACHEL McKENZIE - as she had stayed here before. On arrival we were delightfully told we'd been upgraded. What was this upgrade we speak of? A queen size double room? A suite with panoramic views of the beach? No, no - unfortunately they thought that the people who had booked a 4 person dorm 4 weeks ... read more

Hi Family, Friends and Blog readers, We enjoyed a nice lie in today; Paul and Suzanne had left for work early and both flat mates had gone so we had the place to ourselves. I made us a nice bacon sandwich each and after a shower we headed out to Bondi beach. We decided to walk the to Bondi beach from Coogee, this was a amazing 6km walk along the coast up and down with breath taking views. It took us about an hour to get there and it was well worth it!! The view walking in was so good; Bondi is a great beach but it’s defiantly over rated with plenty of other better beaches to see. We relaxed on the beach reading, then I headed in for a swim, it was freezing and the ... read more

Our plan today is to visit Bondi. Using our Opal cards to full advantage we caught the Light Railway to Central Station and the caught a bus to Bondi. This took us down Oxford Street through Paddington - the other side of Sydney. We spent five hours on the beach and Dave braved the waves a couple of times, great fun but a bit exhausting for a soon to be pensioner. Both of us are feeling a bit cooked but it was good to have a relaxing day. Our return to the apartment took us down Market street past the designer shops and along side the major skyscrapers. It was fun to people watch as we walked and we saw another side of Sydney. Again we took advantge of our kitchen and Lyn prepared pie and ... read more

Hi everyone, we're currently down at Bondi Beach watching the surfers ride the waves. Looks hard work if you ask me, we've had a dip in the water and it's cold. It looks a dull day, very cloudy but it is very hot, quite a few people are down here sunbathing. They have surf schools here, each group are in different colour surf gear. Right now we are in the RSL club having lunch, it is right on the front and we have a fantastic view of the beach so watching the surfers as we tuck in. We ordered sweet potato wedges and king prawns and salad, huge portions and very cheap. Apparently the RSL stands for Return Services League, they have photos up of the service men who lost their lives at war. If you ... read more

Woke up that morning and went looking somewhere to have breakfast. I could have just gotten something at the convenience store but since I was going to be doing a lot of walking that day I opted for a full breakfast. I found a nice restaurant that served breakfast nearby and had a regular breakfast of egg sandwich with bacon along with some orange juice. It was not cheap being almost $11 dollars. I reminded myself to try to stay within budget for the rest of my Aussie trip. First stop on the day was another post office. I should explain that I send a lot of postcards while traveling it does save me the trouble of buying gifts and bringing them in my luggage. This time I was posting a package to New Zealand. It ... read more
