Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Did not appreciate waking up alone today, sucks royally. me and Marc did pretty much nothing all day until we headed into the city centre! He had another catering job with wankerface Paul and I was meeting Zoebird to do some apartment shopping online. When I got there I went straight into wake up to have a pee, it was so weird.. like I'd never left! I even saw a few people I met whilst I stayed there, was nice to see them. I kinda almost missed the city when I arrived, it was so familiar to me but I guess [View Full Entry]

Late for check out again. Got up at like 9.45am did notttt want to get out of bed at all. Managed to get my stuff together and pack it rather well. Ugh my backpack is so heavy its ridic. We discovered there was a direct bus straight to bondi beach outside hyde park which is like a 10 minute walk away. So we set off walking and literally within 2 minutes I was sweating. The backpack was killing me. Why didn't I bring a suitcase? Would make my life so much easier, I'm an actual numpty. We stopped in our delicious [View Full Entry]

Holy crap, SO hot. 39 degrees today! The breeze itself was hot. Definitely another day for the beach! Munched on some delicious wrap from our secret food court and all made a joint decision to go to Bondi beach again. This is definitely 'get brown' weather. Final day for our travelcards so may as well get use out of them! Ahhhhhhhhh glorious glorious ocean. I wish I was a mermaid and was friends with all the fish, a shiny tail and seashells, that would be my wish! For those of you who don't know, that is an extract from The O.C [View Full Entry]

If there is one thing I learned from visiting Kyran in Melbourne, it is to accept people's generosity - especially when it is put in writing! Before we left to go on the tour in Alice Springs I emailed Kim, our friend from Tango night in Buenos Aires to see if she wanted to grab a drink when we visited Sydney. Her reply shocked me with its generosity. She said that she was out of town during the period that we are in Sydney, but that her apartment was empty and that we were more than welcome to use it. I [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 Sydney Happy 30th Anniversary……….Our plan was to have a low key day and finish up some shopping for items I had eyed earlier in the week. We awoke around 8:00am and started packing. Ok, how come all this stuff fit in the bags when we left home? Rich checked his email and had received an email from Larissa from GE saying that she would like to meet us for lunch at Darling Harbor. So we quickly got ourselves ready and headed out to meet Larissa. I was quite excited to meet her as I had heard so [View Full Entry]

It feels strange to use the blog to convey bad news, but unfortunately, I am not having the best experience in Australia. I have come down with the dreaded swine flu and have been in bed (actually "bed" is a euphamism for Tim's thermarest) since Monday and finally went to the doctor today. Confirmed swine. With lots of time on my hands and my brain full of evil thoughts as to who exactly should be to blame for all of this, I now have a well-polished theory. The country of Australia is to blame. Having just traveled through all of the [View Full Entry]
