I just made some new friends in my new home. 22 of them namely. All hungrily attacking the bag chocolate rugelach I had left on the kitchen counter. Who can blame the ants? Those things are tasty. I am discovering a number of fun things about living on my own. Like the late night fashion show tonight, where I tried on all my sailing gear left from college sailing days. (Don't judge, I really was just trying to see if it all still fit.) Cold weather sailing gear makes you look like you are on a space mission. Every item of clothing is pouffy, noisy, too big or too tight in all the wrong places, and colored bright yellow or flourescent orange. I used to put on my spray top, the nylon overalls and the rubber ... read more

In the beginning... OK folks- well we did it, well we started it anyway. After a few nervous moments and a lot of re packing of the bags we finally made it on the first leg of our journey. In the spirit of really getting into the backpacker spirit, we are easing ourselves into the new lifestyle (but are currently in our first youth hostel of the trip). This is a bit of a delayed update, we have already "done" New York and have arrived safely in Canada (despite the torrential rain and thunderstorms just as we were trying to land! - mum ignore that - it was fine! Honest!!) We will provide more detailed updates but in summary we have walked approximately 22,000 miles already (or it feels like it), we have been "travelling" ... read more

Can you get high from excessive exposure to Fantastik? The answer is yes. I have been spraying the "heavy duty" version on every imaginable surface since Saturday. After surviving an adventurous move diagonally across Manhattan, I am now in my new apartment! "An attractive tall, blond woman standing near the UN building almost caused the death of three innocent souls this weekend" may sound like a headline from Metro. But it almost happened, when my 20 year old "truck driver" decided to pay a lot more attention to this lady's extremely tight jean miniskirt than the traffic. We all made it in one piece, though sadly the lamp and dresser drawers did not. The morale has been strong, and the spirits high during the first 48 hours in the new apartment excluding a brief moment of ... read more

No one was at the Jetblue check-in counter when Sacha dropped us off in her shiny wine-colored Tucson. We had just spent two days in Aruba (more about that in another blog) and now we were headed to New York. Yeahhhh, the Big Apple. Check in went well and we proceeded to immigration. Reina Beatrix International has a US-approved and staffed immigration section and it was here that things fell apart. We approached the sour-looking lady in the cubicle for the usual, dehumanizing fingerprinting and mug shots. The lady asked Shanna why she had written out of Curacao. "Because I am going back home to Holland", said Shanna. "So do you have a job now?” she asked. "No, I quit my job a few weeks ago and my boyfriend and I are now on a world ... read more

So we are writing this from New York but it is actually about our trip to Washington - with one thing and the other we never got a chance to update it there! Much prefer Washington to New York - it is quiter, more relaxed, smaller, much easier to get around and best of all everything is free! Washington was the scene of Pauls money disaster though, so we will always remember it for that! We got the Chinatown bus ok in the end for all my worrying about it, seemed a bit chaotic when we arrived but went pretty smoothly in the end and we got dropped off right in the centre of washington. Hostel in Washington was not as professional as the one in New York, and seemed to be a bunch of ... read more

So, after much anticipation, packing, goodbye partying, and then 12.5 hours on the train... we finally made it to... NEW YORK, NEW YORK!!!! (you have to sing it to have the full effect) It was a lovely train ride, nice and slow, perfect for sleeping. We arrived at Penn Station kind of late, around 10pm and decided to take the subway to get to our destination. Guillaumes friend, Gianni and his girlfriend Erica, live in New York and they so kindly invited us to stay with them. It took a while to figure out how to get INTO the subway and wasted a few bucks trying to do so, and then trying to figure out which way to go wasnt so easy either. Lucky for us Superman helped us find our way. I'm serious. Guillaume was ... read more

After a rather brief and restless night of sleep, it was time to face the day at Ham-tech (that's Hamilton, for you non-insiders). Luckily, we didn't have to face it too enthusiastically, easing into it with a quick breakfast at the dining hall and then off to our morning massages! We grabbed our meal tickets for breakfast and headed over to the Soper Commons, or Commons, as it's more commonly known. Its original purpose was as a church, as directed by its benefactor, but when he passed away, the college repurposed it as a dining hall. It still has its architectural charm though, which is handy, since the food isn't any good. We've had a debate raging about its quality all weekend, with all the ladies on the side of rating it "bad." Although the dining ... read more

Although we were looking forward to our class dinner, it was with some dread that we entered the Annex - now known as the Tolles Pavilion, once they realized that "Annex" wasn't as sexy a name as they first thought. This was because we all remembered in great detail what the Annex was like - a cold, grey, uninviting garage-like box with poor acoustics. The one benefit, we thought, to being in here though was that it would likely be cooler than any other un-airconditioned space on campus. We were wrong. It was just as hot and humid inside the Annex as it was in our dorm rooms. We made our way through the narrow hallway and presented our tickets for the dinner to the girl at the door before walking into the part of the ... read more

06/05/07 - 15/05/07 New York, New York We arrived in New York, I started reading Amerika by Franz Kafka. Very timely. One tunnel and one black Lincoln town car later and we were on that expensive strip of land - Manhattan Island. We de-bagged in midtown and strolled around Broadway and Times Square soaking up the atmosphere. A man sat in his convertible car, not just with roof down but converted to an office, with a desk installed in the back and passenger seats. Printer, Fax, Flat screen monitor, pot plants, stapler and pen pots - the works. Now there’s a way to use and abuse Starbucks free wireless internet. With a couple of days before Jen’s brother was meeting us, we nipped off to Atlantic City for 2 days of outlet center shopping and 2 ... read more
