Working for an international legal association gives me plenty of opportunities to travel, mostly in Europe and Asia, with some US trips. I'm adding my experiences in these cities in the hopes that you can find some humor and travel inspiration in them!

Here I am again, typing a recap of my trip while on a plane. It just seems to work better to spend my time getting a bit more sleep during the conference, and running the risk of forgetting something for the sake of more rest! We left midday Tuesday, with a less than pleasant flight via Continental/United. Fortunately, we had a direct flight right into Orange County, and were renting a car, so once we had our bags, it was an easy drive over to the hotel, which was about five minutes away. Our home for the next few days would be the Island Hotel, just across the street from our hosts’ offices. Although the hotel wasn’t right on the water, and it was undergoing construction just next door for the duration, it was a really ... read more

The next morning definitely dawned too early – as in, my dad had to text me when I was supposed to already be downstairs to see if I was okay. And I was still asleep. Good thing I had a few minutes! We had another good morning session, and again headed off to lunch – this time at Tivoli gardens. I’d read about Tivoli in a murder mystery several years ago that took place in Copenhagen, and looked forward to seeing it. It’s supposed to be one of the most famous landmarks in the city. We took a short coach ride, and walked a short distance to get to the entrance and our restaurant, Groften, was close by. The group filed in, and we were in a private room overlooking the rest of the restaurant. The ... read more

Friday morning dawned EARLY. Despite being back in my room at a very reasonable time, I have trouble settling my brain when I’m out with a group of people until late at night. So I puttered around for a while, uploaded the photos I had taken of the group and posted them to various places, and played a computer game. I was well and truly exhausted, and finally fell asleep, but it felt like my alarm went off far too early the next morning. We had a very productive morning session, with my favorite part being the “speed-dating.” Since we have a networking group, we like to encourage different ways for them to get to know each other. So we set up the room like a speed dating session, and had the delegates sit in pairs ... read more

Thursday morning was fortunately a bit quiet to start, as I still had a migraine. I finally heard from my hotel contact (she gets to work around 10, and definitely leaves before 4). We agreed to meet at 11, and ultimately did. I was satisfied with our conversation, although she didn’t have sufficient answers to some of my questions, and I was hopeful that the guests wouldn’t experience the same kind of hoopla as we had. Not so much the case though – we later heard from one of our directors that he’d been told upon check in that we had paid for his room (not the case), and when he requested a bathrobe, he was told that only people on the 6th floor got bathrobes unless he wanted to purchase one. It was so very ... read more

The next day, we were back at Heathrow again, this time, headed to Copenhagen. The flight wasn’t too long (fortunately, because the seats were SMALL!) and we were soon at the airport. The airport is quite beautiful, with these dark wood floors – how often do you see that at an airport? We got all of our luggage and found a taxi. And that’s when the trouble started. It turned out that there was a huge championship bike race holding their time trials in the center of Copenhagen (why, I don’t know). They’d blocked off most of the center of town…you know, where our hotel was. And with four big bags (hey, we had a lot of conference material!), there was no way we could walk a long distance to the hotel. So we drove. And ... read more

We met our friend at our hotel around 6:30 and caught a taxi over to our other friend’s flat. He lives on the ground floor of a flat that is one of many in a complex surrounding a garden – he is also in charge of the garden, and is apparently the only person under 70 and the only man to serve on the committee. We got a very quick tour of his flat and headed outside to see the garden. It’s not your typical English garden in that everything wasn’t pruned and clipped perfectly. They prefer it to be a natural garden, and it very much made me think of the Secret Garden. There is a long pathway around the garden with all kinds of plants, including huge hydrangeas with blooms the size of my ... read more

Normally, I would write these posts as I am traveling, but this time, I felt like I was more in need of the rest whenever I had a down moment, than I was in need of recording exactly how I felt at the time. So instead, I’m putting pen to paper, as it were, while flying home at the end of a week away. *** We left on a Saturday evening for London, planning to spend three days there to prepare for our conference in 2013. I had big plans to watch some of the television shows and movies offered on our Virgin Atlantic flight, but I was just so darned tired, so instead, I mostly slept. Arriving on Sunday morning, I was keeping my fingers crossed that our hotel rooms would be ready for us ... read more

After a few hours rest, we were off to the races again – this time for the final dinner of the conference, our Gala dinner. We were again a small and intimate group as we set off in the bus for a restaurant only a block away. We left the bus and again had to cross the street – as we started to cross, two red and yellow dragons began to perform a welcome dance along to some music. It was a great surprise to the group, and a fun way to welcome everyone. We walked up a flight of outdoor steps to get a better look at their performance and after it ended, headed inside. We again had to walk up a well-worn staircase to the private room where we would be having dinner. The ... read more

So here we are, almost to the end of day two of the conference, and as usual, it's been a whirlwind. Last night, we headed to Wild Lotus. And so much for me saying that there are no accidents here - we saw one on the way to the restaurant, with two people on motorbikes injured. A bunch of other people on motorbikes had gotten off their bikes to surround them and keep them safe from other motorists while they were being attended too. The restaurant was really beautiful and peaceful. We were shown to a private room upstairs with one long table - that's one of the nice things about being in a small group. Often, we're small enough that we can all sit at the same table. It can make it a bit difficult ... read more

Hanoi is an experience. It’s almost indescribable. The last couple of days have been spent solely at the hotel, so I haven’t had the chance to really experience the city. But all of that changed this afternoon. We headed out for lunch at the Green Tangerine – to get there, we took a very short coach ride (truly we could have walked if it wasn’t so darn treacherous), and then walked a bit to get to the restaurant. Walking in Hanoi is an adventure, one I’d had a bit of a warning about. The driving here is what our guide calls “controlled chaos.” There’s really no such thing as right of way. It’s more like, just go and people will get out of your way. They alert you to coming up behind you by beeping their ... read more
