So to get to London, we chose a connecting flight through Atlanta...well...the flight was delayed from Detroit to Atlanta and we missed our connecting flight from Atlanta to London by 5 minutes. Looooong night. After speaking with several Delta agents we received 6 meal vouchers and a night's sleep at the Hyatt in Atlanta. We were originally booked at the Days Inn but after deciding we were getting nowhere with Priscilla, we spoke with a niceR Delta agent and booked a flight to London for Saturday May 3 at 10:30pm and got a better hotel situation. So we were in Atlanta for 24 hours... We went to our hotel and had some fun before getting to bed. We slept in and got a free Continental Breakfast at the Hyatt, and then went out to lunch with ... read more

Cool again last night and CC is hot to get to town for her first shower since hitting the trail. We dispensed with a hot breakfast eating and had only granola bars and dried fruit. We derssed warm as the temp was still in the low 40s. Like last year I shed layers quickly and CC is more reluctant to come out of the warm stuff. The trip showed to be 6.1 miles to the road, due to trail relocation we were later to find it was 7.5 miles. We made the road by 11:30. A fellow was letting a section hiker out and offered to call the hostel for us on his way down the hill as there was no signal in the gap. Not 15 minutes later Laura one of the owners pulls ... read more

A cold windy night! Dropped down to 25 degrees and somewhere in the night there was a brief rain. As a Ranger student we called this area the TVD (Tennessee Valley Divide), and is famous for the wind and cold. It has lost none of it's reputation as far as we are concerned. The shelter was empty when we crawled out of the tent around7:30AM. We did some moving of gear and soon had all our stuff under the roof overhang of the shelter out of the wind, in the sun. We had a hot breakfast of oatmeal with a cup of Joe looking down into the valley seeing the tree greening washing up the mountain sides like water on the sea shore. Views like this sell for millions and all we had to get ... read more

Last night was the worst rain we have had on the trail to date. CC and I both were happy that it was only wind and rain with no thunder and lightining. Still felt bad and only had granola bar for breakfast, CC didn't mind as all she wanted to do was start walking and warm up. Started feeling better by lunch and we decided to stop at Low Gap Shelter for the supper we didn't eat last night and dry our gear as the sun had come up with a nice breeze. Walking into the shelter area, we were greeted by a barking dog. A young man call to it bringing it under control. The shelter seemed a bit short of gear, but the man seemed OK. We introduced ourselves and went about our ... read more

Walked past the Ranger's Mountain Camp today. There was a Blackhawk flying resupply missions in the area and then there were the aggressors harassing the students here and there. All bringing back memories. Weather last night was fair with some light rain and mild temps. The morning started out foggy and we had no view from Blood Mtn, the highest point in GA. From ther we dropped down to Neels Gap. This is famous for being the only building the AT goes through. There is an Outfitter who has a very profitable business re-outfitting Northbound hikers. We picked up our first resupply mail box, made a few phone calls and hit the trail again. I had packed some flat bread before the hike and ate it last night for supper, there was a problem with ... read more

13.3 miles today had some trail magic at Woody Gap. Phexen's parents were waiting on him to ensure he was doing fine. They made us a nice lunch and we had a long talk. Phexen made much better time and made it in right behind us only dropping back 20 minutes. I guess the promise of food and family made him move faster. We passed through Gooch Gap, Liss Gap, Ramrock Mtn, Woody Gap, Big Cedar Mtn, Burnette Field Mtn and Turky Stamp Mtn. ending at Woods Hole Shelter. Our walk went quick and we are doing fine to date.... read more

Great night for sleeping, temp in the mid 50s, light breeze and no night creature visits. We were up at 6:45AM, walked down to the creek for water and made our morning oatmeal. Morning camp breaking chores seemed to have lost little effectiveness and all was stowed for walking. Beside Phexen there was one couple sleeping on the second level of the shelter (bear protection I guess). They must have been heavy sleepers, my cooking and our eating caused no abating in the snoring from the loft. We were on the trail by 8:30AM, a little early for us and quite good for our first full day on the trail. The trail was kind to us, the morning seemed to be down for the most part, smooth grade and few large stones. We are walking through ... read more

Our shuttle arrived about 12:30 for the run down to Springer Mtn. The ride down was scenic and restful with someone else driving. Stopped in Blairsville, Ga for a late lunch/early supper. Then it was off to the trail. We headed up the trail .9mi to reach the Summit of Springer and the official start North, this was 6:45PM. We made that distance in 30 minutes and CC looked to the sky then at me. "The sun is still fairly high, let's quit wasting time and walk." Off we went. We hiked until 8PM covering 2.5 miles ending up at the Stover Creek Shelter. There was no need for cooking, so the tent went up and we did a bit of socializing. "Phexen" a young man had his tent near ours and he came out ... read more

After leaving Washington, we flew to Atlanta. I threw up on takeoff and the landing (I continue my hurling across America tour 2008 - we even invented a new word for it - spuke n. to spew and puke at the same time). We drove to Alpharetta where we saw the house that I lived in as a baby. We even checked out Northside Hospital aka the Baby Factory where I was born. After that we went to my Dad's friend Donald's house for the night where I met up with some kids where we played NFL and we saw a grave where this guy called Charlie Jackson died with his three sons and his wife. One of the kids had a little razor motor bike that went so fast and was so small I grazed ... read more
