Today was amazing. From the excellent breakfast to the faster than expected drive to the amazing beauty of Savannah, it was amazing. We arrived in Savannah at 3:30 today, after a 7 hour drive, and promptly drive in a few circles before finding the hotel. No big deal...we found it in time, and it is amazing. It is the oldest hotel in Savannah, and has been maintained and updated with care and detail. The lobby is spectacular, with a big staircase, the spectacular library and courtyard. The service is perfect: the valet parking is great, the proper old fashioned bellman brought up our bags, the conceirge called our room to welcome us, the free wine and cheese reception every weekday between 5 and 7, the hotel brought in chocolates and a weather report when we were ... read more

As with my past travels, at a certain point in the trip, you really start to long for your own bed, for a kitchen, for the convenience of doing laundry at your leisure. It was at this juncture of the trip, now four weeks in, that this feeling started to set in for Adina and I. That's not to say we weren't excited to see the awaiting Southern cities, but with each passing day, the idea of reaching the final destination became more and more desirable. Fortunately, this feeling had come with only a few days left in our trip, and so, we drove to Savannah with enthusiasm to see what we had heard was an exceptionally beautiful town, while simultaneously looking forward to being one stop closer to Livingston, New Jersey. Our intentions in both ... read more

Geo: 32.0808, -81.09076/4/12 – We left Michelle, Brett and Danielle in Apex, NC at 8:20 AM, 68 degrees and headed for Savannah, Ga. It was not raining when we left, but it rained most of the trip to Georgia. The storm was following us down the road.We chose to set out on some back roads, rather than the customary I-95 route that we know so well. And it proved to be scenic and a better choice. For anyone who is familiar with I-95 and North Carolina going south, or South Carolina going north, you have seen the obnoxious "South of the Border" billboards that litter the road for miles and miles. We avoided them almost entirely, until the road we were on intersected with I-95, right at the border. And the last half mile in was ... read more

30th may savannah After finally making it to our hotel in Savannah at 1.30 am we headed straight to bed. With little sleep we managed to get up before breakfast ended and for once we were surprised to see a decent breakfast. In the other places we had stayed looked like they went to the local, bought a bagel pack and butter, got their fold out garden furniture out in a spare room and offered a "continental breakfast". Its amazing how they can advertise this This was pretty good, waffles, sausage and all the side bits. Pretty solid. We have been told good things about Savannah and that river street is the happening place. We made sure that our hotel was right on river street for night out purposes. Having lost a potential night out due ... read more

Savannah was to be our Spring Road Trip this year. Susan and I and wanted to visit this Southeastern city for some time, after visits to Charleston and St. Augustine. Drew, on Spring Break from teaching, came along, too. From the blogs I have read, it seems most travelers go to Savannah after reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I had neither read the book nor seen the film or knew the story. But that would change as a result of the trip! We arrived in Savannah in the early evening after a good day's drive down Interstate I-95 from Northern Virginia. Our GPS led us to to the southern, newer, side of Savannah and our hotel, the Hampton Inn. We were not staying in the city's historic district, but Abercorn Street nearby ... read more

Surprised? Well, it’s true. Larry is back on the road again. Almost all of 2011 was spent attending to appointments with the VA for one reason or another – from a general check-up physical to a stubborn kidney stone to PTSD counseling. I’m sure glad that is over – especially the kidney stone! I started a blog about St. Augustine FL some time ago and thought I had finished it; however, only when I was preparing to write this blog did I discover the errors in my ways. I had completed the text but never added the pictures and published the finished product. Oops!&%$#&. I’ll have everything you’ll ever need or want to know about St. Augustine FL to you soon as well as a summary blog about other miscellaneous excursions around central Florida. LOL The ... read more

Today was another pretty short drive. We only had one stop and arrived in Savannah at about 12.30pm. A few of us went to grab a bite to eat and play some pool before our trolley tour of the city. The tour was actually very interesting, the problem was everyone was so tired that it was a struggle to stay awake. The best part was seeing the spot where the Forrest Gump bench was located. The bench isn't there anymore unforatunately, but you can tell that it was the right spot. After the tour I had a snooze for a couple of hours before we all head to Outback Steakhouse for dinner. It's safe to say they have no idea what Aussies actually eat, but the food was nice. I ordered a rib eye steak, wich ... read more

Savannah was very similar to Charleston, with lots of charm and history. We did our own walking tour throughout the downtown. Savannah is set up in a series of "squares" - 24 in total, each with a beautiful park, surrounded by a few houses and commercial buildings and usually a church. Many of the oak trees are hundreds of years old; some can even live up to 1000 years! One of these squares was where Forest Gump sat on his famous bench. Unfortunately, the bench is now in a museum, so I was not able to get a good pose :(. Doing your own walking tour sometimes takes you off the beaten path. One interesting store we found was an old key cutting store built in the late 1800’s and still run by the grandson.... read more
