Well, it's great to be back in our "winter" home. Nice to be settled for a few months and back to our normal activities - golf, tennis, and of course happy hours! Travelling took it's toll on the ole' waistline. Sitting for long hours in the driver's seat, using the mandatory golf carts, and the slow, leisurely walks when touring doesn't wear off the calories, especially when feasting on the local cuisine that is just too tempting to resist. Travelling and staying in so many RV parks and campgrounds, made us realize how much we appreciate our RV Park in Surprise, Arizona. With over 100 clubs and sports activities, pools, spas, entertainment, and a golf course, there is never a dull moment. We also really missed the desert, mountains, Arizona sunsets and our resident quails, mourning ... read more

Once we left Louisiana, we headed straight to Texas, anxious to be on the road and back to Arizona is good time. We had visited Texas before, so felt there wasn't much need to be tourists again. But the weather started to change, with snow in the forecast (OMG!), so we stopped in Austin for a day. We visited the Capitol Building - another amazing piece of architecture, made out of local red granite. A beautiful building. Spent the next night in a rest area, waiting out the snow. Fort Stockton had about 6 inches (gee, that happened last time we were here), but the sun was shining the next morning, so put on 550 miles in one day! Now we are only one day away from Surprise, Arizona - our winter home! And we ended ... read more

As expected, New Orleans was quite the experience. We spent a day and a half there, wandering around the French Quarter, Garden District, and a local cemetery (where all tombs are built above ground because of flooding). Our RV Park was only a few miles from the downtown, so we hopped a bus both days. We met several locals as we waited for the bus, and found them to be very friendly and helpful, but were still warned to be very careful after dark. We probably pushed it a little, waiting on a street corner in the dark, as the bus was 50 minutes late! But I guess since I am writing this, we obviously made out fine. There are so many different characters on the streets (get a load of the "grass man" and "transformer"). ... read more

We had a one day stop at Theodore, Alabama, and went over to Dauphin Island. Dauphin Island is attached to the mainland by a 5 km bridge, and although seems quite far from restuarants and shopping, was quite heavily populated. Most houses are built on pilons to protect from hurricanes. And what Atlantic Island would be complete without a fort? Fort Gaine was still in respectable condition, and even had an on-site blacksmith to demonstrate his trade. More beautiful shoreline and beaches - the Gulf definitely is a perfect distination if you enjoy laying on the beach, soaking up the sun.... read more

We completed the last leg of our Florida journey, driving up the Gulf of Mexico during the last 3 weeks of December, stopping at Punta Gorda, Port Richey, Carrabelle, Mexico Beach and Milton. This part of Florida has been more of a relaxing time, as we enjoyed the above-normal temperatures, most days in the 70’s and 80’sF (20-30C). Each area had something different to offer, from miles of pure, white powdery beaches, to an abundance of cheap golf courses, to long bike rides along small island roadways. Christmas was quiet this year, which was a little different, but we managed to still cook a small turkey, went for a bike ride, and golfed unlimited for $8.00! Our last Florida destination ended up being a complete surprise. We never know what kind of campground/RV Park we will ... read more

We finally reached our most South East destination - Key West, Florida - our trip only goes West from here! Overseas Highway, the 125 mile long road connecting numerous small gems of islands that are like a broken necklace, ending in the very quaint, historic town of Key West. But most surprising of all, was how busy and chick it was, entertaining all age groups, with stores, pubs, restaurants, bed & breakfasts, historic houses, and best of all - a busy marina, which had 2 cruise ships in the day we were there. Needless to say, the streets were teaming with people until late at night, when most pubs provided live entertainment, all competing as to who could play the loudest music. Reminded us very much of Mexico. We found a wonderful Bed & Breakfast (Old ... read more

We spent 10 hours one day cruising along the intercoastal waterway and New River (canal servicing the downtown) in Fort Lauderdale. A beautiful and relaxing way to see the land of the rich and famous. For one fare, we could hop on a off a water taxi, stopping at stores, restaurants and pubs (where you could grab a drink and take it on the taxi again!) Our "taxi driver" gave a running commentary on the history of the enormous mansions and yachts belonging to the likes of Sonny & Cher, Lucy & Dezi, Lee Majors & Farrah Fawcett, sports legends, owners of mega giants such as Staples, SunGlass Hut, Blockbuster, inventors of electric wheelchairs, the security tag on clothing, even the fortune cookie! My favourite yacht was the sleek black beauty shown below and owned by ... read more

Titusville is about an hour east of Orlando, and is the best location to view the shuttle lauches at the Kennedy Space Center, which is just across the bay. Our campground was located right on the water, which was great. Unfortunately, we just missed launch last Saturday, but maybe best that we missed the crowds, especially since was the Thanksgiving weekend here as well. We toured Kennedy Space Center one day, and Astronaut Hall of Fame another. Both were great – absolutely incredible how huge the space shuttle, rockets, launch stations are. I also didn’t realize how many space launches there have been – 17 Apollo missions alone, over a period of 9 years. They were both very entertaining, from meeting an astronaut, 2 IMAX theatres, a simulated space shuttle ride, and of course viewing the ... read more

For a change, we decided to hop on an open air tour bus that would tour us around St. Augustine. We’ve decided that all cities boast “oldest”, “smallest”, “tallest” when it comes to buildings, trees, churches! It’s the fine print that you have to read, as in “in the world”, “in the country”. And we have to figure out if they are replicas or originals, which is not always clear. Oh well, they are all beautiful to see, each with their own unique designs and personal history. St. Augustine is known for Spanish Explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon, who in his quest to discover the Fountain of Youth, landed and named Florida in 1513. Although he never discovered the spring waters which would preserve our youth, it does lend a certain romance to the city. We ... read more

Savannah was very similar to Charleston, with lots of charm and history. We did our own walking tour throughout the downtown. Savannah is set up in a series of "squares" - 24 in total, each with a beautiful park, surrounded by a few houses and commercial buildings and usually a church. Many of the oak trees are hundreds of years old; some can even live up to 1000 years! One of these squares was where Forest Gump sat on his famous bench. Unfortunately, the bench is now in a museum, so I was not able to get a good pose :(. Doing your own walking tour sometimes takes you off the beaten path. One interesting store we found was an old key cutting store built in the late 1800’s and still run by the grandson.... read more
