Geo: 32.0808, -81.0907Today we decided on a diversion up into South Carolina to Hilton Head Island. This is a recreational/retirement area just north of Savannah. In the past the area could only be reached by boat and was the site of a couple of working plantations and a few cottages. Since then a causeway has been built and the island is composed of resorts, shopping, golf courses and several gated communities called plantations. Although there are 12 miles of beach, only a small amount is public. It appears it is Spring Break time for some people considering the young people on the beach. There is also a golf tournament at a course within one of the retirement communities. We have now travelled from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Leaving the island we went through Bluffton which ... read more

Well here we go then! - the first entry of our 5 week trip around the US. I guess everybody will be wondering how the flight over went with Jack so let's get straight to it; it was ok - testing at times shall we say! He did really well all things considering - in about 16hrs of travel he got about 2hrs sleep but in between smilling, playing, crying, kicking the seat in front of him and wandering up and down the airplane aisles we made it safe and sound. After being delayed in Newark for a three hours we finally arrived in Savannah at about 9:30pm where Jeff and Bettina were waiting. After a leaky nappy incident where Lucille ended up covered in wee, we mounted up and made our way back to their ... read more

Savannah Savannah is an old American city, established in 1733. It's famous for being so beautiful that it was the only Southern city spared destruction by Sherman's army during the Civil War. Savannah has many gorgeous, grand houses centered around 24 city squares and is a very popular place for filming movies (Forrest Gump, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil). The port is one of the most important in the US. Savannah's economy has in the past been based on cotton, silk and indigo. Driving around town we saw beautiful Live Oaks everywhere (an evergreen species of oak) with Spanish moss hanging from their branches. (First, it's not Spanish and second, it's not moss. It's actually an epiphyte and part of the pineapple family. Also known as an "air plant", it doesn't harm the ... read more

10am: Akshay and I explore the beach while the others still snore. The seagulls dont seem too excited to see us there. Had a quick round of Daytona racing in the arcade room before heading back up to the room 12noon: Breakfast in the van today. We decide to buy some cereal and milk from CVS. Sanak and I find a Wii console, Neha and Dhiraj find that its not a good idea to leave us unattended for even 5 mins Highlights of the drive: - Sanak finally finds a post office to mail the letters he has been carrying since Chicago. The letters have had a road trip of their own before finding their way into a postbox 2000 miles away from home - Neha manages to confuse everyone for a while by looking ... read more

Visiting the Old South By Mrs D. Like a blast to the past in a time machine, I traveled back 149 years to 1860 in Charleston, South Carolina, right before the beginning of the Civil War. I found myself at Drayton Hall on the banks of the Ashley River, sitting under the magnolia trees. Actually the year is 2009, and it took us only one hour and thirty-five minutes by plane to reach Charleston. Our destination is so close to home, and yet this is the first time that we have ventured south in the United States. I was excited to finally see the plantations and beautiful homes that I read about in Gone with the Wind and saw in The Patriot. Of course, the Old South no longer exists. There are no slaves, no women ... read more

We read a lot about Savannah and Charleston in novels and history pieces and always wanted to explore them. Thus, getting the chance in Thanksgiving break, we headed towards Savannah and Charleston for a glimpse into their old world charm. We were not expecting to find a long queue at the rental car pick-up; it being the Thanksgiving day. However, after a nightmarish long wait we finally headed towards Savannah some three hours behind our schedule. The drive from Atlanta to Savannah (I-75/I-16) was smooth taking close to four hours. Reaching Savannah, we checked in at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Historic downtown which is pretty standard. However, a point is to be noted about Savannah. No hotel in the downtown area (the preferred staying place being close to everything) offers free parking. You must ... read more

Left the anchorage yesterday ar 7:00 am, Wanted to get past St Catherines sound before we anchored but the weather looked bad and my chart plotter has started losing sattelite connection when it rains. Came up a little creek to a small area with an old but run down marina and a little restaurant and a few houses. It is near a town called Richmond Hill, GaAnchored up from the houses and dinghyed to the restaurant in 15 kt wind and rain. It was great restaurant though, warm and good food. I had crabcakes and baked flounder with keylime pie for desert. Anchor did not drag in 30 kt gusts all night. Today decided to wait another day because it is really cold and cloudy. Tomorrow is to be sunny and warmer. Still hope to be ... read more

Pulled up anchor this morning going to Savannah but talked to a guy and his wife that were anchored in the creek that had just left and they had a bad experience so we came back to the anchor we had last night and decided to wait out the weather. Put up the tarp and mixed a screwdriver and watched the rain. The temperature is warm so it was really pretty nice and relaxing. Winds light from the east. . May leave tomorrow and may be in Florida Thursday or Fri. Storm seems to have really calmed down so don't think it will be much of a problem. Sitting on deck last night and thought I saw a bridge moving. Very wierd . Then I realized it was a hugh casino boat going out of the ... read more

Left Beaufort, SC at 6:15 heading tothe Savannah River. There is a tropical storm coming acraoss the panhandle of Florida in the next few days so we altered plans a little and are going to Savannah tomorrow. We are anchored in a little creek just south of the Georgia border and the Savanna River. Hope to be in the city of Savanna tomorrow about lunch time. Looks like a lot of rain and wind coming to the Fernandina Beach area over the next few days. Maybe we will miss it and get to Florida later this week. I am already a few days ahead of where I thought I would be anyway. This is a really nice isolated anchorage in St Agustine Creek, about 1/2mile south of the Savannah River. Gettting ready to fix a meal. ... read more

November 3, 2009 Hey y’all! What a day! We drove to Savannah which is truly one of the most beautiful cities we’ve see. We all took a trolley tour (once more except Bill) which was great and really gave you a feel for the city. Bill and I had taken the tour twice before but since I can’t remember yesterday…it was all new to me!! The narrator was quite informative and some of the fun things we saw involved movies…over 60 movies have been filmed in Savannah! He drove us by the park where Forrest Gump sits on the bench talking to that lady at the beginning and the end of the movie. We saw the house where “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” was filmed! It was really exciting and the history and ... read more
