28th, 29th,30th April & 1st May 2010 San Francisco Of all the places we've been, we've spent more time on the beach here than any other! It's an awesome city, you get the all the activities a coast has to offer, beaches, wind surfing, cycling and yet all the atmosphere of a cosmopolitan social scene. Jonathan did really well finding our hotel. We're staying at the Hotel Del Sol in a family room - we get a bedroom and Jack gets a bedroom - all of us have been sleeping really well and breakfast is included! The location couldn't be better - we're at the edge of the Marina district and a few blocks away from Union Street and Cow Hollow. This meant we could walk to the beach, the Aquatic Park area, the park, the ... read more

26th & 27th APril 2010 Fishys & Fairgrounds Monterey Bay was the first stop of the day for a visit to the world famous aquarium, for those trivia fans - it was built by David Packard of Hewlett Packard fame! The fish, turtles, penguins and flamingos were popular with the little guy as was a small dome that he could sit inside while waves crashed above his head. We stopped for lunch but we should have headed back to the van - it was decidedly average and very overpriced! Something like $35 for three sandwiches a couple of crisps and an apple! Later that afternoon after a driving tour round Santa Cruz we arrived at Seacliff State Park, about ten minutes down the road, for our next stop. A breezy time was had on the beach. ... read more

24th & 25th April 2010 Big Portions, Big Sur & Big Beauty. Well, if there's ever a piece of road that you have to drive once in your lifetime, it's the Pacific Coast Highway between San Simeon and Carmel in California. It's a stretch of wilderness that is overwhelmingly beautiful. Drive as we did from South to North and you have huge dramatic cliffs on your left and luscious green hills or steep rocky cliffs on your right. It's an enchanting single carriageway for 90 miles and if you're lucky any recent lanslides will have been cleared. There was such a spot just before we stopped for lunch that was particularly hairy. There was a steep bump in the road dropping off from right to left where a landlisde had caused damage - single file traffic ... read more

North America » United States » California » Pismo Beach April 23rd 2010

Friday 23rd April Pismo Beach The journey here reminded us of the Dales back in England, lots of rolling green hills but with cattle rather than sheep. We were close to, but not quite on the coast. We arrived at Pismo Beach just in time for lunch and the mandatory lunchtime sleep afterwards! This was one big site, over 300 pitches, a pool, minigolf, clubhouse, restaurant and store and was fully booked for the weekend. Hardly surprising really given that there was direct access to the beach from the campsite. For the first time we got in a bit of a muddle over the itinery. The booking form for Pismo stated that we had two nights reserved so we had a slow and steady afternoon, I did the washing, Jonathan went for a run and Jack ... read more

21st & 22nd April 2010 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Malibu & Santa Barbara Thought we'd start off by doing a little place name-dropping! We hadn't planned to visit all of the above, but as we were sat in 'the beast' setting off from the Los Angeles campsite, Jonathan looked at me and said, What can we go and see on our way to Santa Barbara? Well, he did ask! We were heading West anyway but instead of heading round the outskirts of LA on the Interstate 101, we went West through town instead. We travelled the length of Sunset Boulevard from LA central to the coast, taking in the Hollywood sign and the very posh neighbourhoods of Beverly Hills and Bel Air along the way. It took a few attempts to get a picture of ... read more

19th & 20th April 2010 Hey Mickey you're so fine West from Indio to the outskirts of LA at Pamona, the Fairplex KOA (right by the Los Angeles Showground). Did we strick it lucky or what? After the previous couple of days sitting at the MCC and observing all the 45ft plus Motorcoaches, we pulled into the campground only to find that part of the showground next door had an RV display on! Well, wild horses couldn't have kept us away. It was a two minute walk from our pitch to the otherside of the campground and through the pedestrian gate into the show. The first one we went it was for sale for $239,000 (reduced by $100,000) - it was all a bit bling for our liking, leather ceilings, leather seats and probably a leather ... read more

17th & 18th April 2010 Pimp my golf buggy..... Onwards from Needles took us to Indio, Palm Springs and the Motorcoach Country Club . The stretches of road were long and straight and cruise control and coffee were all that it took to keep 'drives' happy. Before we'd even got through the automatic security gates of the MCC, staffed by a guard, we'd had an invite to a Cocktail Party! It was certainly a classy place, a party playground for Motorcoach owners - a golf course, a mile of waterways, a yacht club and a clubhouse. We certainly got the impression that it had a very active social scene. There was people watching a plenty to be had. Most of the owners had at least one golf buggy and some had boats also - their preferred ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Flagstaff April 16th 2010

14th, 15th & 16th April No, the bandits haven't got us! (or otherwise known as Flagstaff, Route 66 & Needles) Well, what to tell you. I think the fact that we only took one photo in Flagstaff says it all! It's not that it wasn't nice, in fact it was quite lovely. It reminded us a lot of Fernie, slightly bigger and a little more tired looking. I think it's just that having got used to taking photos of very beautiful places for the past two weeks, Flagstaff scenery just didn't match up. Fair enough there's a big hill there, with a ski resort and lots of outdoor shops, which we certainly made us of, but it didn't tickle our fancy like the National Parks. All in all, Flagstaff turned out to be a bit of ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Grand Canyon April 14th 2010

Monday 12th & Tuesday 13th April Monument Valley to Grand Canyon National Park It was another long one yesterday. The wind was howling across the desert and in a high-sided vehicle like ours the journey wasn't particularly pleasant. We restricted our speed to 50mph, but that meant it took us a little longer than expected to get to the Grand Canyon National Park. Hooray for Thomas (the tank engine). Lunch was at the first viewpoint as you entered the park, Desert View. I think we did really well, we controlled our excitement and managed to eat our lunch first before heading down the footpath to get our first glimpse of the Grand Canyon. When we arrived in the early afternoon, the weather was fantastic - clear blue skies and a calm wind. What a great first ... read more

Sunday 11th April Capitol Reef National Park to Monument Valley Yeeeeehaaaaaa, wild west country here we come! Monument Valley has been the backdrop for Hollywood movies since 1924. The film buffs among you may recognise the scenery in the photo's from such classics as The Searchers, Fort Apache (John Wayne), My Darling Clementine (Henry Fonda), Easy Rider (Peter Fonda), Back To The Future III (Michael J Fox) and Forest Gump (Tom Hanks). It was a long journey getting here. We set off early after stocking up on pie, scones and coffee from the Gifford Farmhouse (see yesterday's entry) in Capitol Reef and headed out along our planned route. However, the Moki Dugway and a conversation with a Park Ranger made us reconsider. Imagine the scene, you're driving along a regular Highway, 261 in particular, and you ... read more
