28th, 29th,30th April & 1st May 2010 San Francisco Of all the places we've been, we've spent more time on the beach here than any other! It's an awesome city, you get the all the activities a coast has to offer, beaches, wind surfing, cycling and yet all the atmosphere of a cosmopolitan social scene.
Jonathan did really well finding our hotel. We're staying at the Hotel Del Sol in a family room - we get a bedroom and Jack gets a bedroom - all of us have been sleeping really well and breakfast is included! The location couldn't be better - we're at the edge of the Marina district and a few blocks away from Union Street and Cow Hollow. This meant we could walk to the beach, the Aquatic Park area, the park, the marina, Fishermans Wharf and all the restuarants and shops based there, plus the hip and happening shops and restaurants on Chestnut & Union Street. In fact we haven't even made it to the downtown area - we've had everything we needed and more on our doorstep.
Our first full day was spent in the saddle, a blazing one! We hired bikes and a
trailer from Blazing Saddles bike rentals and 'biked the bridge'. The route took us all along the waterfront to the Golden Gate Bridge, out to Fort Point, over the bridge and to a little seaside town the otherside called Sausalito. Included was the ferry back so after a fish and chip picnic lunch we hopped on board, gave our legs a rest and got the ferry to San Francisco. We had a really pleasant afternoon wandering around the seaside shops at Pier 39.
Day two started off with us getting the Muni (the local bus service) to the Zoo. After a lengthy wait in the queue and a small tantrum we got in just in time to make it to the Grizzly Gulch bear habitat for feeding time! This wasn't any normal feeding time - a couple of fish were put in the water in the bears habitat and we got to watch the two bears try and catch the fish. Unfortunately one of the bears went hungry as a heron caught one of the fish but we did get to sea the other demolish a fish, leaving a few entrails behind for the seagulls!
There was no
way, we thought, that we were going to top that, but........choo choo. Along came a little steam train! That was it, we saw the flamigo's and it was choo choo, the giraffes, it was choo choo, the lions at least got a roar, but then it was a choo choo! We headed off after lunch and walked up the coast to the Golden Gate Park, (nowhere near the park itself) a couple of miles up the coast. We walked the park from West to East in search of the "carousel" and an icecream. We found the carousel but no icecream. We also found an incredible childrens playground, a huge set-up with something for all ages. By the time we got home that night we were all ready for an early night!
Today has been very chilled. A haircut for Jonathan, we tried to get Jack's cut but a tired stroppy toddler didn't make for a happy salon experience so the wee man still can't see properly! We hit the beach (twice) and had a long lunctime nap and have just finished packing ready for our flight tomorrow. Its been an absolutely fantastic trip but now it must end. See
you all soon.
