After the last, epic, entry this one is likely to pale in comparison for one main reason the weather. We moved on the hundred miles or so south from South Carolina into Georgia. Our destination was that other southern city we have all heard or read about, Savannah. Like Charleston, it reminds you of a bygone age, when life was tough but exudes that certain charm. As I said the weather conspired to ensure we didn’t see the City at its best. Whereas we’ve been able to enjoy everywhere we’ve visited so far by walking, now the heavens decided to open up and let us have it. Undeterred, we drove the beast into Savannah, parked up in the visitors centre and acted like lazy tourists and took a ‘hop on/off’ trolley tour. Savannah was founded in ... read more

Savannah to Raleigh (via Charleston) - 36°c I woke up this morning feeling like death warmed up. After a rather poorly night and subsequently a severe lack of sleep, I could have done with spending at least another few hours in bed, if not the entire day! However that’s not the Contiki spirit, so in keeping with that spirit (not to mention our schedule!) I managed to get out of bed, showered, dressed and down onto the bus in good time. Once I and everyone else was aboard, I was filled in with all of the details of how the night progressed after my sudden departure, and who did what songs up on the karaoke. It was also good to see that I wasn’t the only one still feeling a bit poorly this morning, with many ... read more

We had another early start, 7:30 bags to coach for our drive to the pretty town of Savannah. We only stopped off once along the way so not a super long drive. We arrived in Savannah at about 12:30 so couldnt even check into our hotel yet. We went for a walk round the town, to the main shopping strip where we found a few little shops and had Subway for lunch mmmm. We continued on our walk and came across Chippewa Square which is where in Forrest Gump the bus stop he is waiting at, on the park bench was filmed. Unffortunately they have removed the actual bench and it now sits in the Savannah Musuem but it was still kinda cool to see. After this we made our way throught the city markets and ... read more

12th and 13th August. At last we reach civilisation again. Savannah, Georgia I had read somewhere was supposedly saved or rather not destroyed by Union General Sherman during the Civil War partly because of its architectural beauty and uniformity. Although, it may be more likely the case that as the Confederate army had withdrawn and the mayor had surrendered the city, it was spared. As the city had surrendered General Geary of Sherman's army undertook to protect Savannah's citizens and property. Apparently it was Sherman's scorched earth policy that gave him military success in the South - not least because of the fear that was created by it*. *Attached to that policy was the instruction to treat all citizens fairly (even as they had their crops and assets stripped!) - unless they gave the Union Army ... read more

Only had one stop on the way... Then we were in Savannah by lunchtime. Had a walk, some lunch at subway, saw where the bench was where Forrest Gump was filmed - though the bench isnt there anymore. But saw the steeple where the feather flys down from! We had a look down at the river.. Saw one crack of lightening then it was all of a sudden poaring with rain... Time to head back to get our room keys. Just relaxed in the rooms for a bit. Had the tv on, and every channel was interrupted by a flash flood warning for Savannah. “Remember if you're driving and you see flash floods... Turn around - Don't Drown!!!” Had dinner at a little diner down the road, then headed back to the hotel for our big ... read more

So, on this leg of the trip we stopped in Sumter, SC to visit Charlene and meet for the first time my goddaughter, Teagan. And we saw Winston's impeccably kept apartment in Savannah. The only thing wrong with Savannah are the herds of squirrels. Everything else I found perfect. I'm sure there are some people who are ambivalent or even annoyed about the Spanish Moss everywhere in Georgia. Maybe homeowners find it invasive or tiresome. Idiots. I find myself gasping with excitement and a little bit of fear every time we drive or walk under a canopy of its draping majesty. Spanish Moss is probably the reason that non-believers feel spooked out on the “Ghost Tours” of Savannah and why it is considered America's most haunted city. As if the ghouls and spirits have risen from ... read more

This year marked the fifth anniversary of our marriage, and since Jeremy was stuck in Georgia, I decided to take a trip down there to see him. We decided that Savannah would be a better place to spend the weekend than Brunswick, so after I flew into Brunswick we made the hour drive up to Savannah. We decided on our first night there to go do a ghost tour. For those who don't know, Savannah has been dubbed "America's Most Haunted City", so naturally there are several ghost tours to choose from. We started off with one called Ghosts & Gravestones. It was a trolly tour that made a few stops and told you all the stories. This tour also visited the Sorrel-Weed house which is said to be the most haunted house in Savannah. It ... read more

Mum ---"God it's hot" Local Man--- " Itcha cawse youda bein the Deep Souwwth now Ma'am" Mum ---"pardon?" Sherrin ----"He says he knows its hot" Well here it is the last installment with the Mum and Bob (well until next year). After hanging around home and have some valuable rest time I figured it was time to drag them out and about again to see some more of this country. Now when I first got here I figured that all I wanted was a medium sized 2 door sports car that can fit a duffle bag, golf clubs and a 5ft 10.5 Inch driver....think again. After 4 weeks of watching these two vie for the front seat and battle to get in and out of the back seat I was rethinking my decision, although getting ... read more
