Today, Carl, Aaron, Jen and I had tickets to go up to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, so we all got up and ready, and caught the subway down to Battery Park. Apart from the fact we had to change routes because some lines were closed due to track works, when we finally go on a train, it kept slowing down, and even stopping because of delays. This was by far the worst day on the Subway, and I’ve seen it like that before then – or even since then! It took us probably more than an hour to get from midtown down to Battery Park, which would normally only take about 20 minutes! Finally we made it, went to the ticket window to pick up our tickets, and go through security before getting ... read more

We got up and packed up to check out at 11am, and luckily we were able to keep our bags at the hotel for a couple of dollars, as we weren’t going to our next hotel until later that evening. We jumped on the subway, and headed for the Bronx, to go to the Bronx Zoo. I wasn’t nervous at all – it was the middle of the day – however Carl was slightly worried when we were the only Caucasian people on the train =P In the Bronx the trains go above ground, so you actually have something to look at whilst waiting to reach your stop. The zoo is a fair way into the Bronx, and is only about a 4 minute walk from the station. The zoo was pretty quiet, being the middle ... read more

Day 15 - 10/2/11 Woke up feeling terrible… I apparently celebrated Mum’s American birthday a little too hard!! I got up at around 10am, was up long enough to have a shower, then decided it might be best I sit this one out and go back to bed. Carl went out and explored without me, and at 4pm I started feeling a little better so ventured out and did the 5 minute walk to Macca’s, then brought the food back to our hotel! After I’d eaten, Carl and I caught the subway up to Columbus Circle, where there’s a little shopping mall, so we had a look around there. We went into a Borders, it was huge! They’ve still got heaps of calendars left over too, which are down to a dollar each! After Borders we ... read more

Day 14 - 9/2/11 (Mum’s American Birthday) We slept in a little this day, not leaving until around 10.30. First stop was TKTS, as I wanted to see a matinee show in the afternoon. I ended up deciding on La Cage Aux Folles, but I’ll go on about that later… From there, we caught the subway downtown, and walked halfway across the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s something I didn’t do last time I was here, and I’m definitely glad we decided to do it this time, as the views of the city are actually really good from the bridge, as well as the bridge itself being very photogenic! Again it was very windy, and therefore very cold, but worth it all the same. From there, we headed back to Century 21 so I could buy a second ... read more

Today we headed off at around 9.30, with the first stop being the Original Soup Kitchen which was used in the Seinfeld. “No soup for you!” Just took a couple of photos there, Carl on one side with me under the Soup Kitchen sign, a truck driver was even nice enough to leave a gap between him and the car in front so we could get some photos! The niceness is quite a rarity in NYC! We then walked across a couple of blocks, stopping for some Sbarro pizza, then towards the Rockefeller Centre. We bought some Sunrise/Sunset tickets for the Top of the Rock, which means you’re able to go up twice in one day – once in the daylight, and once at night. I decided I preferred to do this rather than the Empire ... read more

We headed out around 10am, and headed to Bloomingdales to have a look and do some shopping. It’s huge, but quite expensive so I didn’t buy anything. From there we walked around the corner to FAO Swartz. It’s a huge toy store, with everything you could imagine, including a part where you can make your own Muppets! The main reason we went there though, was because it is the home of the huge piano from the movie “Big”. You can play on it, and its heaps of fun, though it was way less organised than last time, and they were just letting everyone on at once, which made it very hard to play a tune with everyone else jumping around on it! After I’d had my fun on the keyboard, we left there and headed to ... read more

Our flight back was at around 11, meaning we had to get up around 8.30 to get a cab/shuttle at 9.30. All was fine, and we arrived with time to spare, and the flight was on time and went smoothly. I slept some more on the plane. We arrived and caught a cab from JFK to our hotel which took about 20-30 minutes. We were able to check in straight away, and our room was quite big! And we’re pretty much right in Times Square! We caught the subway down to Wall Street, and on the way one of my straps on my bag broke!! We had a look at the New York Stock Exchange building in Wall St. Took a few photos, then headed to have a look in Century 21. Whilst it’s fantastic because ... read more

Day 10 – 5/2/11 We had the alarm set for 8.30, so we could explore the Niagara area, including Canada!! We walked straight for the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the USA and Canada. We walked across, stopping for photos at the line between the countries, then went through Canadian customs, which was super easy, and all they did was stamp our passport! Once we were officially in Canada, we had a quick browse around, in search for some breakfast – and some Canadian dollars! My thoughts on Canada, or Niagara at least, were that it was all quite tacky, and showy… It reminded me a bit of Surfer’s Paradise because of all the wax museums, and a Ripley’s, and all these haunted houses… It was all a little bit surreal. We found an atm which was ... read more

Got up at 9am to pack my bag and get ready to leave and meet Carl at the airport, where we would be flying Buffalo, so we could visit Niagara Falls! My shuttle to the airport wasn’t coming until 1.45pm, but I was taking my time to do everything, so it was just about right! I said my goodbye’s to Madi, headed downstairs to wait for my shuttle, and was out the front watching a car which was stuck in the middle of the road, in the snow and ice, unable to move. Half an hour later, I was still waiting, and starting to freak out a little that I was going to be stranded, when finally the shuttle driver walked up to me, and told me he’d parked on the next street, as he couldn’t ... read more

Slept in this morning after a super late night, and when I woke up, I saw the net was working so I jumped on and ended up staying on for ages! When I finally got up and out, I headed to the Apple store on 5th Avenue. It was absolutely PACKED! They didn’t have what I was looking for, so I left there and had a look at the stores on 5th Ave! Went into Tiffany’s, just for a look, and on my way back down in the lift, I’d said something, and the guy next to me said, “Are you Australian??”. I said yes, and he said he and his gf were too. He asked where I was from, Melbourne! “Us, too! Whereabouts?”. I replied Mordialloc, and he said, “No way! I used to live ... read more
