Fort Pulaski National Monument, Savannah, Georgia Pulaski was a revolutionary war hero who, as far as I can tell, never saw the fort named in his memory. But his namesake fort played a key role in a way it was never designed for and changed defensive military technology forever. In the War of 1812, Great Britain handily embarrassed our country by sacking and burning down our capital - hardly an event a country wants to repeat. So our leaders came up with the idea of building 42 forts up and down the Atlantic and Gulf coasts designed to protect our coastal cities from any such future attacks. As is the case today, the effort took more time and much more money than originally thought, but all 42 forts were started in the 1820s. Some were finished, ... read more

Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, Georgia Yesterday was a down-day so there isn't a whole lot to tell. It was about the same as all other down-days - we slept in, cooked a bacon and egg breakfast, did a load of laundry, took a nap, walked the dogs, played cards, went to the store for more wine, read some, grilled hamburgers for dinner, played cards a second time, and went to bed. That's pretty much the entire day and there isn't enough in there to make an essay, at least, not a new one. But we did have a conversation about our trip so far, asking the question about whether we have done justice to some parks. The question started along the lines of how long do you need to visit a park before you can ... read more

That's our mission now.....to go home. We left Tropical Palms this morning @ 9:30. It was sad to see it fade in our rear view mirror. We had such a wonderful stay there over these past four months. Some of our good friends came to see us off as Cory hooked up the car. Mist in our eyes as we had to say good-bye to each one of them. We know it is only for several months before we are back together again. It isn't really "good-bye".....instead it's just "so long for now until we meet again". But we will miss everyone. Stay healthy and happy - one and all. As we rounded the corner to drive out of our park, there they were! Waiting and watching for us to drive past. Yes, Sam & Sandy ... read more

Downtown Savannah, Georgia Rolling down the street, headed in our direction, is a greenish vehicle that looks a lot like a trolley. In front is a driver who steers the vehicle. Behind him is a guy dispensing beer from a tap - he's a bartender, in fact, and has bottles of hard stuff lined up at waist level. Yes, this is a bar on wheels. Bellied up to the bar, while riding this vehicle, are eight or ten very happy people drinking and yelling at us pedestrians on the sidewalk. Yes, it is a moving bar on a tour of the old part of Savannah, Georgia. There is something rather unusual about this trolley, though - there is no motor or engine. In fact beneath the bar stools all of those drinkers are pedaling furiously. The ... read more

Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, Georgia We hitched up and drove 115 miles up the coast to another Georgia State Park, also located on a coastal island. This is the third Georgia State Park we've stayed in and all of them have been great finds - well managed, clean, and stunningly gorgeous. And you can't beat the price, especially after the old folks discount. We always prefer state parks over commercial places and Georgia exhibits some of the best (Florida wasn't bad either!). Drive up was relatively short and uneventful. I tried to find an alternative to Interstate 95, but there really wasn't any - out here on the coast, with all the islands, a local route can become brutally long. So we got on the interstate, put the accelerator down and drove 90 miles up ... read more

See.....I told you you could sleep in a little this morning. Before we left, I got a little body perm so now it takes me longer in the morning to get ready. No slicking back the "do" and just going. Now, I have to drag out the curling iron and run that through my pathetic strands. It's not easy trying to be a glamour girl anymore. Lulu shares my dilemma. Of course, she thinks she's a pretty gal no matter what. Such a diva. I do see she's going to need a facial when we get settled. Her face is filthy. She probably wishes I would carry her in a diamond encrusted glass case....too bad, she goes in my cloth carry bag or she doesn't go at all. Diva!! Special Day today!! It's our oldest daughter, ... read more

Our last morning in Savannah. There were still a couple of things that we wanted to do, so instead of heading in the direction of Charleston, our next destination, we spent some time in Savannah seeing and eating what we hadn't been able to so far. To be honest, while I have liked Savannah, it didn't wow me like New Orleans did. It definitely grew on me, but the city just didn't captivate me in the way New Orleans did. Maybe if we had visited here first, I would feel differently. We were up pretty early and got the car packed up. We were back on the move again. At least for the rest of my trip, I will only move twice more before flying out. I am getting a little tired of being on the ... read more

Another day to explore Savannah. We headed into the downtown area and decided to get one of the trolley sightseeing buses, as it would give us a chance to see more of the city and decided which places of interest we would like to visit. I think there are a couple of companies in operation. We headed to the depot where the trolley bus starts from, I think it was near the Savannah History Museum that we had visited the day before. We bought our tickets and hopped on the bus that was about to leave soon. It was a hot day and I couldn't wait for the trolley bus to get moving so that we could get some breeze. We had decided to ride the trolley the whole way round, so that we could listen ... read more
