After returning the rental car to Gainesville we picked another up to drive to St Augustine. We got a hotel room for the two days we were in St Augustine as our host fell through. It was a blessing in disguise as we really needed some rest days to catch up on sleep and the rest of it. We were really disappointed with St Augustine as a town. The downtown historic area was very attractive and lovely to absorb while dawdling around but other than that we wouldn’t rave about the rest of it. There were a few historic attractions but in this day they have been made too tacky touristy and don’t offer value for money. However, we did enjoy lazing about, the art galleries downtown and swimming in the hotel pool.... read more

“Island Hopping on the ICW” After a short stay in Fort Pierce, Florida, we headed up the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) to the town of Vero Beach. This turned out to be a very boater friendly place. There is a city run marina just yards off the ICW with great facilities. They had slips for rent as well as about 75 moorings. The grounds were very nice and they provided a TV-lounge, a laundry, and a very nice shower facility. Also, the City provides free bus service and they had a stop right in the marina. The bus took us to West Marine for boat things and to the beach for restaurants and walking the boardwalk. We spent a couple of days here and ran into several friends we had made during the winter in the ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We woke up early so we could get to Cape Canaveral and still have lots of time to see the remaining parts of the Kennedy Space Center. While I was in the shower, Onaxthiel discovered by watching CNN, that the shuttle had again been delayed. Early in the morning, as they were fueling, the fuel sensor again failed. Since this had been something of a recurring problem, and was supposed to now be solved, there was no way they were going to take off that day. We wanted to have more complete information before we made a decision about what to do next though, and they hadn't yet announced how far back they were pushing the launch. We went to an IHOP for a tolerable breakfast, and sat around for a while, until we ... read more

Just got back from a marvelous visit with relatives in Orange, California. Only 'dark' spot was the Quality Inn we booked. Spent the first night there and checked out early the next morning. Checked into another Quality Inn, adjacent to I-5 and very close to Disneyland. This one is very well managed and it shows. I'll post some photos when I figure out how ! BTW, if you find yourself in the Fresno, California area....DO NOT stay at the Quality Inn on Ashlan Avenue. The franchise owner is negligent and non-responsive to any form of communication. Electrical outlet in our room was unsafe. No internet acces for FIVE DAYS due to owner's negligence in renewing ISP contract. No regard for " total customer satisfaction" plaque that hangs above the Check-In desk. This place is bad news. ... read more

Woke up early this morning and took a few photos of the campsite before I started to pack up all my stuff. The other group were packing their tents up but since we had none, we got our bags ready and threw them in the van. The whole group was almost ready to go but Dave was still asleep. We woke him up and helped him with his gear before we set off. After quite a drive we arrived at the St. Augustine visitor’s center and had a look around. We walked around the small town for a while and got something to eat. Hannah and I left the others to explore around and in some of the shops. We bought a few things and moved on. Again this town didn’t seem to interest us a ... read more

Leaving Orlando, we went East to Cape Canaveral to check out the Kennedy Space Center, maybe just for an hour or so because we don't like leaving the animals in trailer for long without A/C. When we got there, we were verbally assaulted by the parking attendant for parking in the empty bus lot (where we actually fit) instead of in teh car lot...and then walked up to the gate. Admission was $50 per person...so we snapped a couple of pictures and went on our way. So, that was our space experience. Next, in St. Augustine, we stopped at the oldest alligator "roadside attraction" in Florida. The Alligator Farm was established in 1893 and is now accredited by the zoological association...but its size and its contents allow you to imagine what it might have looked ... read more
