Florida map two PierceHello all! I have made it most of the way through Florida with a brutal head wind most of the way. I guess lately that wind has brought cooler temps for a change. Since Juno Beach I've spent many nights along the beautiful Florida coast. I spent the night in Hobe Sound after a great bistro dinner, live music and free beer. I slept in a field on the edge of town and provided the mosquitoes a good meal. I slept pretty good though as long as I ignored the buzing mosquitoes and the rumbling freight trains nearby. The next day I traveled up the coast through Stuart, Fort Pierce, and into Vero Beach. I hadn't slept in a bed for a few days so I stayed in a budget inn. I think ... read more

3 months until I leave. I am so excited, but I still have so much to do. I recently received the course list, and so far it looks like the classes will be interesting. Now I have to start getting information about vaccinations, and such. Getting everything organized and still dealing with school...blaah. I wish I could just be back, relaxing in Captiva. Sigh...... read more

1/27/07 After spending the night in the St. Augustine Hostel, I drove my bike around the town. It is a very neat town. Similar to Key West’s Duval St. they have St. George Street. Lots of old stuff in this town, which is not a surprise since this is the oldest City in the USA (log that in your grey matter you trivia buffs). Pirates burned this City down 3 times in the past so Pirate stuff was commonly seen. Also Ponce De Leon came here looking for the fountain of youth so their was a lot of his stuff as well. I really should have stayed longer, but I was a little tired and ready to head to Gainesville where a friend Anna resides. I could use some good rest. Around 12:30 I headed for ... read more

St. Augustine is behind us now as we head for Fort Myers. We used the “Red” sightseeing trains to get around and to learn more about St. Augustine from the St. Augie savvy driver / narrators during the two days we were in town. The city is also very walkable so we often skipped the “train” and walked. Highlights included Flagler College, a private co-ed college located in the former "super lux" Ponce de Leon Hotel. Our tour guide, a college student, was wonderful. The Tiffany chandeliers, with rare Austrian crystal, have been appraised as “priceless.” The world’s largest collection of glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany is evident throughout, but none so beautifully as in the grand ballroom, which the college uses as a cafeteria. Attention: Parents of pre-college kids - tuition and room and board ... read more

The North Beach RV Park on a barrier island near St. Augustine, Florida is awesome. http://www.northbeachcamp.com/index.html. Situated between the Inner Coastal Waterway (North River to the west) and the Atlantic Ocean (to the east), north beach has the benefit of offering both sunrise and sunsets. Each campsite is very private, uniquely surrounded by palms and with a branching canopy of live oaks and other neat trees. Being at these sites is like being under a big grape arbor - very cool. Really like this spot, it’s kind of funky compared to some of the fancier parks, very comfortable, natural. A nice restaurant - The Reef - is nearby. We had a great seafood dinner overlooking the Atlantic with a nearly full moon right outside the window. This morning we walked, first along the beach; then crossed ... read more

... read more

One of our many stops on our trek south was St. Augustine, the oldest city in America. It was founded in 1513 by Juan Ponce de Leon, who believed he found the fountain of youth here. It was later colonized by the Spanish in 1565 and became a strategic sea and land base for the Spanish Empire, as it was located on the Gulf Stream straight from the Caribbean Islands to Europe. By controlling this trade route, the Spanish were able to safely bring gold and silver bullion as well as agricultural wealth from the New World to Europe. This historic port town has survived invasions, famines, fires, floods, and hurricanes but still has many of the original structures standing. The most important structure that remains is the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest fort in ... read more
