The Jared

A bicycle tour of the U.S. East Coast. Key West to Canada and a great adventure in between. The smell of sea salt and automobile exhaust and the long open road that lay out in front of me.

It felt good leaving Bar Harbor riding through this exciting village. I had a lot of great fun here with the people and the places visited. It also felt good to surpass 3000 miles as I left the Mount Desert Island and turned eastward to Canada; so close I could taste it. Today was cool and cloudy and the wind was at my back to push me along 80 miles into Machias. The hills continued but I powered through them getting used to this new coastal landscape. This part of Maine called ‘Down East Maine’ was very rural and became increasingly desolate with forest and strange tundra like meadows which I think were blueberry fields. I started my ride today with an easy stroll through Machias where a raging waterfall crashed through the center of the ... read more

I must give much thanks to my Uncle Chuck for housing me at his 1885 Andover, MA farmhouse. The rain drizzled down for three days and I was grateful for having a warm dry place to stay. I returned my rental car in the morning after stopping at the post office then rode the bike back to the house in the drizzly rain. I mostly spent my time on the internet catching up with blogs or looking through my uncle’s massive collection of books. He showed me all about the reconstruction work he was doing on the house; refabricating, residing, scraping, and painting. So much work to do and it really shows, a beautiful old house. Thanks so much for the long weekend of rest! I left Andover in the morning of the third day as ... read more

New England Islands and the Cape PierceThe ferry from Orient Point, Long Island came into port in New London, CT along side a huge cruise ship. I guess it was a big deal for the town and they put on a historical artillery demonstration at old Fort Trumbull south of town. Many of the passengers filled in the down town historical district all afternoon. This old city was set on the side of a hill next to the mouth of the Thames river. It was full of cobblestone streets, old brick buildings, and a collection of old stone churches with towering tall steeples. I toured through the old streets myself riding along some of the old cobblestone streets and up and down the steep hillside. I stopped in at a bike shop to ask about ... read more

The New Staes PierceFriends and family, thank you so much for all your support and encouragement. It really is amazing to see how far word travels. Sorry for the delay on the latest entry, I have had a little more difficulty finding a computer to use long enough to complete a full entry. I wrote my last entry way down on the Eastern Shore of VA and had a fantastic weekend with my good friends Shannon and Serena. The good times continued that Sunday when Shannon and I packed up my bike and bags into her little car and drove up to Ocean City MD. Yes, that is right, I cheated that days 60 mile ride in the comfort and comaraderie of a short roadtrip. We spent the afternoon walking the boardwalk from the noth ... read more

The Outer Banks and The Eastern Shore PierceMy last day at Fort Fisher and Kure Beach was full of excitement. I finally was able to get into the library in Carolina Beach to use the internet because the day before was invaded by wild school kids. The Shirt Shack in Kure Beach was finally open for business and I made a custom t-shirt order. I spelled out my bike tour mission in big red letters on the back. "Key West to Canada" I ate a delicious crab cake sandwich at the Old Pier House Restaurant and relaxed at on the beach while waiting for my shirt to be finished. Later that evening Todd and I went out to the Sea Witch for late food and brew. The next morning we went to the Pier House ... read more

Untitled PierceI have been enjoying my vacation, my vacation from work and now my vacation from my bike. I am relaxing in wonderful Kure Beach, NC, the same place that I have been visiting to get away from the Army for the last three years. It's a little weird for me to say but I am actually glad to be back in North Carolina and especially Kure Beach. It has been a tough journy through the southern states of Georgia and South Carolina where the roads are so narrow and the traffic is so busy. I have some good memories about hangin out with friends at the beach here so it feels good to be back in a comfortable place. As I left Savannah, I was a little sad for leaving so soon. I wanted ... read more

Savannah PierceGood Morning .. Good Beautiful Morning! I spent the afternoon and into the night in Savanah Georgia yesterday and had the best time since South Beach. The four days of cool cloudy weather cleared up and the sun shinned down on the gorgeous green city squares. As I cleaned up and out of the Piratehaus Inn, finished my pirate pancakes and completed one more blog, I chatted with Conrad about the Inn and the old city. On my way out he suprizingly gave me no charge for staying at the Inn because i was a "couch surfer" and I was so greatful. Conrad Matt and Elaine are such fine people, very welcoming, caring, and extremely nice and I will forever thank them for their hospitality. I took a last walk throught the tiney Spanish ... read more

Florida map two PierceHello all! I have made it most of the way through Florida with a brutal head wind most of the way. I guess lately that wind has brought cooler temps for a change. Since Juno Beach I've spent many nights along the beautiful Florida coast. I spent the night in Hobe Sound after a great bistro dinner, live music and free beer. I slept in a field on the edge of town and provided the mosquitoes a good meal. I slept pretty good though as long as I ignored the buzing mosquitoes and the rumbling freight trains nearby. The next day I traveled up the coast through Stuart, Fort Pierce, and into Vero Beach. I hadn't slept in a bed for a few days so I stayed in a budget inn. I ... read more

Florida map one PierceWell folks, I have made up the coast of Florida about 250 miles and I am totally in it to win it. After two full days of brutal head on wind in the Keys, I am powering along quite nicely as long as I can ignore the pain in my but cheeks. The wind is now mostly at my side but from what the locals say it will most likely be there all the way through the state. I left Key West after scarfing down a great lunch on the beach then immediately started battling the wind and the bridges. The first night I stayed at a Motorhome campground where these huge motorhome traveling fortresses surrounded me. The good thing is one of my neighbors offered me a cold water and a ... read more

Day 1, Key West PierceLast sunday I watched my parents drive my truck full of all my belongings down the street as I thought to my self "what the hell am I doing, what did I do? What did I do?!" I was left with only my bike and the little bit of stuff that I had packed into my bike bags. I was more nervous now than ever before and i kept thinking to myself "what just happened here? what did I just do?" as I flew down south. I felt a little better while on layover in Ft. Lauderdale seeing all the palm trees and all the beautiful beach going people, myself included of course. When I finally boarded the tiney plane to Key West I felt great, even the pilot was a ... read more
