Silver Back Cuda - Joanne & Wes

Joanne & Wes We are a couple traveling in a 34" Holiday Vacationer Motor Home. Wes is a GE pensioner who still consults with the company. Joanne is a Public Relations specialist who runs her own "boutique" agency. This is the fifth year that we have been keeping a travel blog. In the winter, we trave to and through Florida. We plan our route to include places of interest going to and fro and have included Williamsburg, Baltimore, Washinton DC, St. Augustine, Savannah, Charlestown, Myrtle Beach, Florida's Pan Handle, Memphis, Nashville, Lexington, Pittsburgh and Gettysburg. Our recent travels close to home have included an RV tour to Herkimer (home of the Herkimer Diamond Mines), Lechworth State Park (NY Fingerlakes Region), and Gettysburg. We have also traveled to New York City and Montreal several times during the past few years. A highlight was the June Jazz Fest in Montreal a few years back. Skiing and visiting family in Vermont and on Long Island, an annual boat camping trip on the islands of Lake George, a few trips to Nevis (West Indies), and trips to Ireland and Tuscany were other travel highlights. Our latest trip to Europe, a river boat cruise from Paris to Normandy in Sept/Oct. 09 was exceptional. We used Empress Travel on Upper Union St., Schenectady and UniWorld cruise line in Europe. We would happily work with both again. Our RV - nicknamed "The Schooner" is located at Mohawk Marine in Alplaus, Schenectady County, NY on the banks of the beautiful Mohawk River in the summertime where it serves as my office. Winter travel to Florida typically has started with a road trip after Thanksgiving and ends with a trip home via a different route at Easter. We fly back and forth a few times during the winter; as we both still have work related responsibilities and like to take at least one ski day at Killington or Pico with our grandchildren. Thanks to technology, Joanne can service her clients while on the road; and Wes has morning conference calls with his GE clients. The RV has served as a fully equipped office since April 2005. The recent addition of a little Jeep, nick named "the dingy" has made our RV trips even more fun. It connects to a tow bar called a Blue Ox, and trails right along behind us. One caution we observe is "don't back up!" This year's trip south has us launching The Schooner in late Oct. and traveling via Washington, DC; Ashville, NC; Lake Norman, NC; Stone Mountain, GA; and then Fort DeSoto and Pine Island before we head home for Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years. Back south for Feb. Can hardly wait.

What a day! Wes got the name of Captain Mike Nabors from Scotty at Coast Connections at Bokeelia. We met Mike this morning near Woody's on the Monroe Canal near St. James City, Pine Island. He first took us out the Monroe Canal and then back up another. St. James City and much of Pine Island is a virtual "Venice" of canal systems. We wound around identifying birds, talking about fishing, enjoying the scenery and seeing things from the waterfront perspective. Mike took us to the Sanibel/Ding Darling Wildlife area which was just beautiful and teaming with wildlife. We headed for [View Full Entry]

We have been so lucky to catch the Pine Island Monthly Art Weekend again. The official name is "Pine Island - Florida's Creative Coast Weekends." Wes bought me a beautiful bronze crab pendant (because of my Zodiac sigh; not because I am crabby) at Island Visions. We had lunch at the Old Fish House, Ice Cream at Great Licks, and dinner at Sandy Hook (food is art, after all!). Adding some photos of this very artsy town - Matlacha really doesn't need a formal "art night;" it's always arty here. [View Full Entry]

Long time blog followers know how much we love Captiva and Sanibel Islands and never miss a visit when we are in the Fort Myers area. I think you can go back through the travel blogs for the entries about the Lighthouse, the Ding Darling Nature Preserve, the Shell Museum and more if you wish to know more about these beautiful islands. As for today, it was sunny, it was Sunday, and it was time for Captiva. We drove through Sanibel and noticed a nice Farmers' Market and stopped for an avacado, a lime, and a root beer float. Sanibel and [View Full Entry]

What is Wes thinking?
Bokeelia is at the northern end of Pine Island. It has a golf course, a few marinas, a few restaurants, an inn or two and many lovely homes. It is also very private. We always stop at Crossed Palms Art Gallery, and the owners let us use their deck across the road to take in scenic Port Charlotte Harbor. Dawn, a silk screen and jewelry artist, was on duty at the shop. She knows her local art scene and especially pointed out the work of Mel Meo. We actually met Mel later on at a most unusualy outdoor "lunch cart" restaurant [View Full Entry]

Pine Island Sunset
Pine Island Sunset
The orientation of the island is such that you really have to work to capture a sunset. This is from the deck of The Waterfront at St. James City at the southern end of Pine Island.
Pine Island is special. It's rural, rustic, artsy, and real. It seems to be home to fishermen, artists, musicians, and people who want a different Florida lifestyle. There are no traffic lights on all of Pine Island! St. James City (where Woody's is located on a canal) is at the south end of the Island, Bokeelia (where Crossed Palms Gallery is) is at the north end, and Matlacha (home to a score of colorful interesting galleries and Bert's for food and music) is the only way in (or out) by land. And, while we have yet to partake; there is at [View Full Entry]

We love this place - the weather isn't perfect; but it is still great!
This is our fourth time at Fort De Soto County Park. It is located in the Tampa Bay area near St. Peterburg. Previous travel blogs from us have covered the area fairly well. Not amazingly, Fort De Soto is the top "hit" getter on the blog. People really want to plan their trips here. We are facing some "weather" because hurricane Ida has hit the Panhandle (Pensacola area) of Florida; so we are cutting our visit to the Tampa Bay area short. We received a credit for the part of our stay that we cancelled at the camp ground - a [View Full Entry]

History is what it is; and the antebellum period is an important part of Georgia's history. A "Plantation" near the base of Stone Mountain is a collection of pre-civil war buildings that have been moved to the site and set up like a little village. The Dickey House is stunning. Because of so many other things going on, we limited our visit to the one home. So we missed the farm animals, various outbuildings and the "four holer necessary house." Very interesting interpretive signage in the downstairs dining room indicated that the residents would propably excape the Georgia summer heat by [View Full Entry]

We were so lucky that a Pow Wow and Native American encampment was going on while we were in Stone Market. It's an annual event worthy of the tickler file! We got a Stone Mountain "Adventure Pass" which covered the $10 entry fee to this and other attractions throughout the park. Buying the tix at the camp ground office had the bonus of making a single ticket ok for two days' admission. [View Full Entry]

Stone Mountain, near Atlanta, Georgia, is magical. We're camping in a virtual four star resort. Two golf courses, choice of nice restaurants, history, geology, fun, scenery, boating, and fishing. Bicyclers are here in droves. Family activities include mini golf, a train ride around the mountain and an incredible high top "Sky Hike"course” with kids in harnesses attached to a zip line. November is great here. No crowds, other than 6,145 fourth graders and their chaperones here on a field trip on Friday. The students are learning so much from a Native American cultural celebration a [View Full Entry]

One of the reasons for our stay in Asheville was to experience some local blue grass string music. This group of about a dozen string players didn't disappoint.
Asheville, NC---Most American cities are struggling to regain a "certain cache" and economic base. Asheville, NC is another such town on the cusp of becoming very special. Among the highlights for us was a visit to some great galleries. One, A Boy and His Dog Fine Art Gallery, landed us a sneak preview of the upcoming Steve Tracy show. Steve himself was there and we had quite a visit. Steve's recent fall scenes of the Asheville area are wonderful; as are his New York series. The gallery, located on Patton Ave., is “not to be missed” if art is your thing. [View Full Entry]
