Trip to Dubai I had a short but great trip. I was amazed at the diversity in the city, there were people from all over the world. Coming from India, I enjoyed the wide, open sidewalks, clean taxis, ....and, yes, the Starbucks! ... read more

The blank desert scenery flew past my window as I headed north through Jordan. I knew that just beyond the flat, brown expanses along the road, the fabled crusader fortress of Shobak Castle, rose up in the distant hills, but, despite a strong urge to see it, that wasn’t where I was headed. After six days of wonderfully active exploring in the canyons and mountains of Petra, I was exhausted and I just wanted to rest, so I reluctantly decided to skip the remote, mountaintop citadel. Instead I was on an overcrowded bus bound for Amman, Jordan’s capital. My journey through the Middle East was down to its last week and I no longer had the luxury of an itinerary-less existence on the road. Amman was the end of the road for me, but there were ... read more

Istambul!!!....it has some magic in its name...with its fair share of disasters, from conquests to eartquakes it emerges as an enticingly vibrant city...Having arrived at the airport, being overcharged for a visa fee, we embarked on a hectic taxi ride into the heart of Sultanhamet ( the place where we were staying me,Deanna,Maria,Justina and Rafal)Welcome to Turkey!!! The taxi ride took about 30 min...the car pulled very quickly, speeded up and even overtook an ambulance with the blue lights on!!!???... Is it how you drive in Turkey, we thought???...well even an extra person in the car did not seem to bother our driver, who later turned out to be extremly friendly, chatty and funny even though he could not speak a word in English...we soon exchanged few words...''tesekkurederim''-meaning ''thank you very much''...oh i dont even remember how many ... read more

I like to cook. It’s my responsibility to shop for and prepare our meals. One of my favorite pastimes is to take the bus down to the shouk and stroll among the fruit and vegetable stands, comparing prices and quality. I buy what looks good and bring it back to make dinner. The produce here is amazing—everything is so fresh. And though it has cooled off—it’s been in the low 20’s Celsius (low 70’s Fahrenheit) for the past week or so—the market is still full of summer vegetables: zucchini, eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers (red, yellow, and green). One of the surprises for me is how much more creative and enjoyable cooking has become. Part of it is the availability of fresh ingredients, but it’s more than that. At home, I’m surrounded by a lot of ... read more

Hello all, Turkey is an amazing land - so unique compared to other places I have been. The first day we arrived, we were accosted by merchants and it hasn't let up - though strangely it's not as irritating as you would think. They are not aggressive, but they are slimy, charming, and persistent. They will try anything to get you in their store... and what really astounds me is their language ability, and not only English! So, the first day we were conned into a local merchant's store... of carpets, no less, but the experience was worth it. We were on our way to see the blue mosque and it suddenly closed to visitor's for prayer time, which meant we had an hour to kill, of course we learned this from a man outside who ... read more

It was a chilly English morning, 0 degrees in fact, and after scraping the ice off our hire car we left Northampton at 7.30 am and set off for what we thought would be a 90 minute trip to Heathrow to catch our flight to Dubai. Unfortunately there was some serious traffic on the M1, and three hours later we dropped our hire car off and made a mad dash to check in. After finding out British Airways had no record of our preferred seating, or in fact of anything to do with our membership of the One World alliance (they wanted to charge us extra baggage at one stage), they allocated us two of the last 5 seats remaining, right down the back of the plane near the toilets(definitely not our favourite airline). When we ... read more

Set off in the afternoon on the train to Heathrow Airport to catch 8 pm overnighter to Bahrain and then onto Muscat in Oman. Flights were fine although had to do an emergency stop on the take off from Bahrain and then sat on the tarmac for two hours! Arrived safely and met up with Justin, Lynn, Jack and Alice. Justin's mum Lyn was also staying over but was leaving the following day. Temperature was about 30 and remained so for most of the holiday. Stayed at their home in the spare room with en suite which was lovely, all with air con (as you'd expect). Had a great time, relaxing, reading, enjoying not working and plan to come out again, maybe do a bit of diving and driving! Went to the Dive Centre and the ... read more
