There is no mistaking the fact that Jordan is a Kingdom steeped in history and culture. From the moment you arrive, you get a sense of its rich heritage, all around are remnants of ancient civilizations long since past, yet they still remain, stamped into the very fabric of this amazing Kingdom and etched into the soul of the people who live here. Amman, the capital city of Jordan is a sprawling city spread over 19 hills. The only modern city combined with the ancient civilization. Mom and I surely had a relaxing and a memorable holiday. Arabic in Jordan would really be an advantage to make the communication simpler and people ripping you off every where. We arrived early morning and checked in Firas Palace hotel which was far from the city. But we had ... read more

Another very cold day today and neither of us very well prepared. Rob bought a corn on the cob to keep him going till lunch. You could pay 0.50 extra for a grilled one which he did. This ended up being a terrible idea; not only was it more expensive but it was dry and tasteless despite the copious amount of salt on it. While eating we went back to the Blue shop where Steph had spotted a pashmina she liked the day before (not black, but purple). After a bit of haggling and a promise to promote the Blue shop with a picture on the blog, Steph managed to get what she wanted for half the price. From the Sultanahmet we walked past the bazaar district up to the university area towards Suleymaniye camii. The ... read more

The Heart of The Holy Land Sure, if you’re going to go to the Middle East you might as well find yourself a safe corner, right? That’s what we figured when we were planning the end of our trip. Much like our recent (read as too late) infatuation with Africa, we also have a serious infatuation with the Middle East. How can you not have an interest in the cradle of civilization? Sure this area is dangerous, at least more dangerous than some places, but it is also the heart of history. Here you have the founding of three of the world’s top religions, the site of thousands of years of military conflict, and some of the world’s oldest standing structures. What is there not to love? So, with all that in mind and a ... read more

Today was our things we couldn't quite fit in last time day. We got up and quite reluctantly left the relative warmth of the hostel to get to the Blue Mosque. (Sultanahmed Mosque) on the way Rob bought himself a corn on the cob, but opted for the more expensive grilled one rather than the boiled ones. It was horrid even with the copious amount of salt that the vendor put onto it. We got to the Blue Mosque and found that it was shut for prayer. I sat down and played with a cute but very wet cat whilst Rob took a photo of the times. We decided to go back at the end of the day nearer the bazaar closing times when we could avoid a prayer time. The Grand Bazaar is something that ... read more

This is what Ayelah said during our Peace, and Environmental Leadership Seminar (PELS) this morning. A cute, curlie haired, small and athletic tel avivan with striking eye makeup. The desert is your test. It is my test. It tests us. There is nothing more vulnerable than living in the desert. It does not forgive. This i have found. I have wore myself out to my bare bones. I have soaked all this in like a sponge, and am sitting here, full, exhausted. I have argued about the conflict, I have planned a project for youth environmental leadership during a seminar of Palestinian and Israeli youth, I have taught Dahn Yoga to my peers (they want me to teach a class every night! wow!), I have baked cakes for birthdays, I have read articles on environmental mediation ... read more
